BIBBIA CEI 2008	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Sotto il regno di Assarhàddon ritornai dunque a casa mia e mi fu restituita la compagnia di mia moglie Anna e del figlio Tobia. Per la nostra festa di Pentecoste, cioè la festa delle Settimane, avevo fatto preparare un buon pranzo e mi posi a tavola:	1 In the reign of Esarhaddon, therefore, I returned home, and my wife Anna was restored to me with myson Tobias. At our feast of Pentecost (the feast of Weeks) there was a good dinner. I took my place for the meal;
2 la tavola era imbandita di molte vivande. Dissi al figlio Tobia: «Figlio mio, va’, e se trovi tra i nostri fratelli deportati a Ninive qualche povero, che sia però di cuore fedele, portalo a pranzo insieme con noi. Io resto ad aspettare che tu ritorni, figlio mio».	2 the table was brought to me and various dishes were brought. I then said to my son Tobias, 'Go, mychild, and seek out some poor, loyal-hearted man among our brothers exiled in Nineveh, and bring him to sharemy meal. I wil wait until you come back, my child.'
3 Tobia uscì in cerca di un povero tra i nostri fratelli. Di ritorno disse: «Padre!». Gli risposi: «Ebbene, figlio mio?». «Padre – riprese – uno della nostra gente è stato ucciso e gettato nella piazza; l’hanno strangolato un momento fa».	3 So Tobias went out to look for some poor man among our brothers, but he came back again and said,'Father!' I replied, 'What is it, my child?' He went on, 'Father, one of our nation has just been murdered; he hasbeen strangled and then thrown down in the market place; he is there still.'
4 Io allora mi alzai, lasciando intatto il pranzo; tolsi l’uomo dalla piazza e lo posi in una camera in attesa del tramonto del sole, per poterlo seppellire.	4 I sprang up at once, left my meal untouched, took the man from the market place and laid him in one ofmy rooms, waiting until sunset to bury him.
5 Ritornai, mi lavai e mangiai con tristezza,	5 I came in again and washed myself and ate my bread in sorrow,
6 ricordando le parole del profeta Amos su Betel: «Si cambieranno le vostre feste in lutto, tutti i vostri canti in lamento».	6 remembering the words of the prophet Amos concerning Bethel: I shal turn your festivals into mourningand all your singing into lamentation.
7 E piansi. Quando poi calò il sole, andai a scavare una fossa e ve lo seppellii.	7 And I wept. When the sun was down, I went and dug a grave and buried him.
8 I miei vicini mi deridevano dicendo: «Non ha più paura! Proprio per questo motivo lo hanno già ricercato per ucciderlo. È dovuto fuggire e ora eccolo di nuovo a seppellire i morti».	8 My neighbours laughed and said, 'See! He is not afraid any more.' (You must remember that a pricehad been set on my head earlier for this very thing.) 'Once before he had to flee, yet here he is, beginning tobury the dead again.'
9 Quella notte, dopo aver seppellito il morto, mi lavai, entrai nel mio cortile e mi addormentai sotto il muro del cortile. Per il caldo che c’era tenevo la faccia scoperta,	9 That night I took a bath; then I went into the courtyard and lay down by the courtyard wall. Since it washot I left my face uncovered.
10 ignorando che sopra di me, nel muro, stavano dei passeri. Caddero sui miei occhi i loro escrementi ancora caldi, che mi produssero macchie bianche, e dovetti andare dai medici per la cura. Più essi però mi applicavano farmaci, più mi si oscuravano gli occhi, a causa delle macchie bianche, finché divenni cieco del tutto. Per quattro anni rimasi cieco e ne soffrirono tutti i miei fratelli. Achikàr, nei due anni che precedettero la sua partenza per l’Elimàide, provvide al mio sostentamento.	10 I did not know that there were sparrows in the wal above my head; their hot droppings fel into myeyes. This caused white spots to form, which I went to have treated by the doctors. But the more ointments theytried me with, the more the spots blinded me, and in the end, I became completely blind. I remained without sightfour years; al my brothers were distressed on my behalf; and Ahikar provided for my upkeep for two years, untilhe left for Elymais.
11 In quel tempo mia moglie Anna lavorava a domicilio,	11 My wife Anna then undertook woman's work; she would spin wool and take cloth to weave;
12 tessendo la lana che rimandava poi ai padroni, ricevendone la paga. Ora nel settimo giorno del mese di Distro, quando tagliò il pezzo che aveva tessuto e lo mandò ai padroni, essi, oltre la mercede completa, le fecero dono di un capretto da mangiare.	12 she used to deliver whatever had been ordered from her and then receive payment. Now on theseventh day of the month of Dystros, she finished a piece of work and delivered it to her customers. They paidher al that was due, and into the bargain presented her with a kid for a meal.
13 Quando il capretto entrò in casa mia, si mise a belare. Chiamai allora mia moglie e le dissi: «Da dove viene questo capretto? Non sarà stato rubato? Restituiscilo ai padroni, poiché non abbiamo nessun diritto di mangiare una cosa rubata».	13 When the kid came into my house, it began to bleat. I called to my wife and said, 'Where does thiscreature come from? Suppose it has been stolen! Let the owners have it back; we have no right to eat stolengoods'.
14 Ella mi disse: «Mi è stato dato in più del salario». Ma io non le credevo e le ripetevo di restituirlo ai padroni e per questo mi vergognavo di lei. Allora per tutta risposta mi disse: «Dove sono le tue elemosine? Dove sono le tue buone opere? Ecco, lo si vede bene da come sei ridotto!».	14 She said, 'No, it was a present given me over and above my wages.' I did not believe her, and told herto give it back to the owners (I felt deeply ashamed of her). To which, she replied, 'What about your own alms?What about your own good works? Everyone knows what return you have had for them.'
