1 Libro della storia di Tobi, figlio di Tobièl, figlio di Ananièl, figlio di Aduèl, figlio di Gabaèl, figlio di Raffaele, figlio di Raguele, della discendenza di Asièl, della tribù di Nèftali.	1 The tale of Tobit son of Tobiel, son of Ananiel, son of Aduel, son of Gabael, of the lineage of Asiel andtribe of Naphtali.
2 Al tempo di Salmanàssar, re degli Assiri, egli fu deportato dalla città di Tisbe, che sta a sud di Kedes di Nèftali, nell’alta Galilea, sopra Asor, verso occidente, a nord di Sefet.	2 In the days of Shalmaneser king of Assyria, he was exiled from Thisbe, which is south of Kedesh-Naphtali in Upper Galilee, above Hazor, some distance to the west, north of Shephat.
3 Io, Tobi, passavo tutti i giorni della mia vita seguendo le vie della verità e della giustizia. Ai miei fratelli e ai miei compatrioti, che erano stati condotti con me in prigionia a Ninive, nel paese degli Assiri, facevo molte elemosine.	3 I, Tobit, have walked in paths of truth and in good works al the days of my life. I have given much inalms to my brothers and fel ow country-folk, exiled like me to Nineveh in the country of Assyria.
4 Mi trovavo ancora al mio paese, la terra d’Israele, ed ero ancora giovane, quando la tribù del mio antenato Nèftali abbandonò la casa di Davide e si staccò da Gerusalemme, la sola città fra tutte le tribù d’Israele scelta per i sacrifici. In essa era stato consacrato il tempio, dove abita Dio, ed era stato edificato per tutte le generazioni future.	4 In my young days, when I was still at home in the land of Israel, the whole tribe of Naphtali my ancestorbroke away from the House of David and from Jerusalem, though this was the city chosen out of al the tribes ofIsrael for their sacrifices; here, the Temple -- God's dwelling-place -- had been built and hallowed for algenerations to come.
5 Tutti i miei fratelli e quelli della tribù del mio antenato Nèftali facevano sacrifici su tutti i monti della Galilea al vitello che Geroboamo, re d’Israele, aveva fabbricato a Dan.	5 All my brothers and the House of Naphtali sacrificed on every hil -top in Galilee to the calf thatJeroboam king of Israel had made at Dan.
6 Io ero il solo che spesso mi recavo a Gerusalemme nelle feste, per obbedienza a una legge perenne prescritta a tutto Israele. Correvo a Gerusalemme con le primizie dei frutti e degli animali, con le decime del bestiame e con la prima lana che tosavo alle mie pecore.	6 Often I was quite alone in making the pilgrimage to Jerusalem, fulfil ing the Law that binds al Israelperpetual y. I would hurry to Jerusalem with the first yield of fruits and beasts, the tithe of cattle and the sheep'sfirst shearings.
7 Consegnavo tutto ai sacerdoti, figli di Aronne, per l’altare. Davo anche ai leviti, che prestavano servizio a Gerusalemme, le decime del grano, del vino, dell’olio, delle melagrane, dei fichi e degli altri frutti. Per sei anni consecutivi convertivo in denaro la seconda decima ogni anno e andavo a spenderla a Gerusalemme.	7 I would give these to the priests, the sons of Aaron, for the altar. To the Levites ministering atJerusalem I would give my tithe of wine and corn, olives, pomegranates and other fruits. Six years in successionI took the second tithe in money and went and paid it annual y at Jerusalem.
8 La terza decima poi era per gli orfani, le vedove e i forestieri che si trovavano con gli Israeliti. La portavo loro ogni tre anni e la si consumava insieme, come vuole la legge di Mosè e secondo le raccomandazioni di Dèbora, moglie di Ananièl, la madre di nostro padre, poiché mio padre, morendo, mi aveva lasciato orfano.	8 I gave the third to orphans and widows and to the strangers who live among the Israelites; I brought itthem as a gift every three years. When we ate, we obeyed both the ordinances of the law of Moses and theexhortations of Deborah the mother of our ancestor Ananiel; for my father had died and left me an orphan.
9 Quando divenni adulto, sposai Anna, una donna della mia parentela, e da essa ebbi un figlio che chiamai Tobia.	9 When I came to man's estate, I married a woman from our kinsfolk whose name was Anna; she boreme a son whom I cal ed Tobias.
10 Dopo la deportazione in Assiria, quando fui condotto prigioniero e arrivai a Ninive, tutti i miei fratelli e quelli della mia gente mangiavano i cibi dei pagani;	10 When the banishment into Assyria came, I was taken away and went to Nineveh. Al my brothers andthe people of my race ate the food of the heathen,
11 ma io mi guardai bene dal farlo.	11 but for my part I was careful not to eat the food of the heathen.
12 Poiché restai fedele a Dio con tutto il cuore,	12 And because I had kept faith with my God with my whole heart,
13 l’Altissimo mi fece trovare il favore di Salmanàssar, del quale presi a trattare gli affari.	13 the Most High granted me the favour of Shalmaneser, and I became the king's purveyor.
14 Venni così nella Media, dove, finché egli visse, conclusi affari per conto suo. Fu allora che a Rage di Media, presso Gabaèl, fratello di Gabri, depositai in sacchetti la somma di dieci talenti d’argento.	14 Until his death I used to travel to Media, where I transacted business on his behalf, and I depositedsacks of silver worth ten talents with Gabael the brother of Gabrias at Rhages in Media.
15 Quando Salmanàssar morì, gli successe il figlio Sennàcherib. Allora le strade della Media divennero impraticabili e non potei più tornarvi.	15 On the death of Shalmaneser his son Sennacherib succeeded; the roads into Media were barred, andI could no longer go there.
16 Al tempo di Salmanàssar facevo spesso l’elemosina a quelli della mia gente;	16 In the days of Shalmaneser I had often given alms to the people of my race;
17 davo il pane agli affamati, gli abiti agli ignudi e, se vedevo qualcuno dei miei connazionali morto e gettato dietro le mura di Ninive, io lo seppellivo.	17 I gave my bread to the hungry and clothes to those who lacked them; and I buried, when I saw them,the bodies of my country-folk thrown over the wal s of Nineveh.
18 Seppellii anche quelli che aveva ucciso Sennàcherib, quando tornò fuggendo dalla Giudea, al tempo del castigo mandato dal re del cielo sui bestemmiatori. Nella sua collera egli uccise molti Israeliti; io sottraevo i loro corpi per la sepoltura e Sennàcherib invano li cercava.	18 I also buried those who were kil ed by Sennacherib. When Sennacherib was beating a disorderlyretreat from Judaea after the King of heaven had punished his blasphemies, he kil ed a great number ofIsraelites in his rage. So I stole their bodies to bury them; Sennacherib looked for them and could not find them.
19 Ma un cittadino di Ninive andò a informare il re che io li seppellivo di nascosto. Quando seppi che il re conosceva il fatto e che mi si cercava per essere messo a morte, colto da paura mi diedi alla fuga.	19 A Ninevite went and told the king it was I who had buried them secretly. When I knew that the king hadbeen told about me and saw myself being hunted by men who would put me to death, I was afraid and fled.
20 I miei beni furono confiscati e passarono tutti al tesoro del re. Mi restò solo la moglie, Anna, con il figlio Tobia.	20 Al my goods were seized; they were al confiscated by the treasury; nothing was left me but my wifeAnna and my son Tobias.
21 Neanche quaranta giorni dopo, il re fu ucciso da due suoi figli, i quali poi fuggirono sui monti dell’Araràt. Gli successe allora il figlio Assarhàddon. Egli diede ad Achikàr, figlio di mio fratello Anaèl, l’incarico della contabilità del regno: egli ebbe così la direzione generale degli affari.	21 Less than forty days after this, the king was murdered by his two sons, who then fled to the mountainsof Ararat. His son Esarhaddon succeeded. Ahikar the son of my brother Anael, was appointed chancellor of theexchequer for the kingdom and given the main ordering of affairs.
22 Allora Achikàr prese a cuore la mia causa e potei così ritornare a Ninive. Al tempo di Sennàcherib, re degli Assiri, Achikàr era stato gran coppiere, ministro della giustizia, amministratore e sovrintendente della contabilità e Assarhàddon l’aveva mantenuto in carica. Egli era mio nipote e uno della mia parentela.	22 Ahikar then interceded for me and I was al owed to return to Nineveh, since Ahikar had been chiefcupbearer, keeper of the signet, administrator and treasurer under Sennacherib king of Assyria, and Esarhaddon had kept him in office. He was a relation of mine; he was my nephew.
