| 1 Figlioletti miei, vi scrivo queste cose affinché non pecchiate. Ma se qualcuno cade in peccato, abbiamo, come avvocato presso il Padre, Gesù Cristo giusto. | 1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: |
| 2 Anzi, egli stesso il propiziatore per i nostri peccati e non per i nostri soltanto, ma anche per quelli di tutto il mondo. | 2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. |
| 3 Da questo appunto sappiamo di conoscere lui, se osserviamo i suoi comandamenti. | 3 And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. |
| 4 Chi dice: «Lo conosco», ma non osserva i suoi comandamenti, è mentitore e la verità non è in lui. | 4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. |
| 5 Ma se uno osserva la sua parola, veramente l’amore di Dio è in lui perfetto. In ciò conosciamo di essere in lui. | 5 But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him. |
| 6 Chi dice di dimorare in lui, deve camminare così come egli camminò. | 6 He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked. |
| 7 Carissimi, non è di un comandamento nuovo che vi scrivo, ma di un comandamento antico, che avevate fin da principio. Il comandamento antico è la parola che avete sentito. | 7 Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning. |
| 8 D’altra parte è anche un comandamento nuovo. Ciò è chiaro in lui e in voi, poiché la tenebra ormai dirada e già splende la vera luce. | 8 Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth. |
| 9 Chi pretende d’esser nella luce e ha in odio il fratello suo, è tuttora nella tenebra. | 9 He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now. |
| 10 Chi ama il suo fratello dimora nella luce, né per lui v’è occasione d’inciampo. | 10 He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him. |
| 11 Ma chi odia il proprio fratello è nella tenebra e nella tenebra cammina e non sa dove va, perché la tenebra accecò gli occhi suoi. | 11 But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes. |
| 12 Scrivo a voi, figlioletti perché vi son rimessi i peccati in virtù del nome suo. | 12 I write unto you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for his name's sake. |
| 13 Scrivo a voi padri, perché avete conosciuto colui che è dal principio. Scrivo a voi, giovanetti, perché avete vinto il maligno. | 13 I write unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I write unto you, young men, because ye have overcome the wicked one. I write unto you, little children, because ye have known the Father. |
| 14 Scrissi a voi, fanciulli, perché conoscete il Padre. Scrissi a voi, o padri, perché conoscete colui che è dal principio. Scrissi a voi o giovanetti, perché siete forti e la parola di Dio dimora in voi e avete vinto il maligno. | 14 I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one. |
| 15 Non amate il mondo né ciò che è nel mondo. Se uno ama il mondo; non c'è in lui l'amore del Padre. | 15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. |
| 16 Poiché tutto ciò che è nel mondo: la concupiscenza della carne, la concupiscenza degli occhi, il tronfio orgoglio della vita, non è dal Padre, ma è dal mondo. | 16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. |
| 17 Ora il mondo passa e la sua concupiscenza con lui: ma chi fa la volontà di Dio permane in eterno. | 17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever. |
| 18 Figlioletti, è l’ultima ora. Udiste che deve venire l’anticristo; ebbene ecco: molti anticristi fà son sorti fin' d’ora: da ciò sappiamo che è ultima ora. | 18 Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time. |
| 19 Uscirono da noi, ma non erano dei nostri; se infatti fossero stati dei nostri, sarebbero rimasti con noi. Bisognava appunto che si chiarisse che non tutti sono dei nostri. | 19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us. |
| 20 Quanto a voi, avete il crisma da parte del Santo, e lo sapete tutti. | 20 But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things. |
| 21 Non scrissi a voi, quasi non conosceste la verità, ma perché la conoscete e perché nessuna menzogna è dalla verità. | 21 I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth, but because ye know it, and that no lie is of the truth. |
| 22 Chi è il mentitore se non colui che nega che Gesù è il Messia? Eccolo l’anticristo! Egli nega il Padre e il Figlio. | 22 Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son. |
| 23 Chi rinnega il Figlio, non possiede neppure il Padre; chi confessa il Figlio, possiede anche il Padre. | 23 Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: (but) he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also. |
| 24 Che in voi rimanga soltanto ciò che udiste dal principio. Se in’. voi’ dimora quel che dal principio udiste, anche voi dimorerete nel Figlio e nel Padre. | 24 Let that therefore abide in you, which ye have heard from the beginning. If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father. |
| 25 E questa è la promessa che egli stesso: ci fece: la vita eterna. | 25 And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life. |
| 26 Queste cose vi scrissi a proposito di quelli che tentano di sedurvi. | 26 These things have I written unto you concerning them that seduce you. |
| 27 Quanto a voi, il crisma che riceveste da lui: dimora in voi, e non avete bisogno che alcuno vi istruisca. E poiché il crisma suo vi istruisce su tutto ciò che è verace e non è menzognero, rimanete in lui come vi istruì. | 27 But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him. |
| 28 Sì, adesso rimanete in lui, figlioletti, affinché, se si manifesterà, abbiamo intiera franchezza e non siamo svergognati da lui alla sua venuta. | 28 And now, little children, abide in him; that, when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming. |
| 29 Se sapete che egli è santo, sapete pure che ognuno che opera santamente è da, lui generato. | 29 If ye know that he is righteous, ye know that every one that doeth righteousness is born of him. |
