| 1 Perciò, lasciato da parte l’insegnamento iniziale del Cristo, eleviamoci a ciò che è perfetto, non tentando di gettare di nuovo il fondamento della penitenza dalle opere morte e della fede in Dio, | 1 Let us leave behind us then al the elementary teaching about Christ and go on to its completion,without going over the fundamental doctrines again: the turning away from dead actions, faith in God, |

| 4 Impossibile è, infatti, per coloro che sono stati una volta illuminati e hanno gustato il dono celeste, sono anche divenuti partecipi dello Spirito Santo | 4 As for those people who were once brought into the light, and tasted the gift from heaven, and receiveda share of the Holy Spirit, |
| 5 e hanno gustato la buona parola di Dio e le meraviglie del secolo futuro, | 5 and tasted the goodness of God's message and the powers of the world to come |
| 6 e tuttavia precipitarono, il rinnovamento a penitenza, ricrocifiggendosi essi il Figlio di Dio ed esponendolo a ludibrio. | 6 and yet in spite of this have fal en away -- it is impossible for them to be brought to the freshness ofrepentance a second time, since they are crucifying the Son of God again for themselves, and making a publicexhibition of him. |
| 7 Perché una terra, che ha bevuto la pioggia caduta spesse volte su di lei e produce erbe utili a coloro dai quali è pure coltivata, riceve benedizione da Dio; | 7 A field that drinks up the rain that has fal en frequently on it, and yields the crops that are wanted by theowners who grew them, receives God's blessing; |
| 8 se, invece, produce spine e triboli, è riprovata e prossima a essere maledetta, e finirà col venire messa al fuoco. | 8 but one that grows brambles and thistles is worthless, and near to being cursed. It will end by beingburnt. |
| 9 Quanto a voi, però, o diletti, noi siamo persuasi, anche se parliamo così, di cose migliori e pertinenti a salvezza. | 9 But you, my dear friends -- in spite of what we have just said, we are sure you are in a better state andon the way to salvation. |
| 10 Poiché non è ingiusto Iddio da dimenticare il vostro operato e l’amore che avete dimostrato verso il suo nome, nell’avere servito e nel servire tuttora i santi. | 10 God would not be so unjust as to forget al you have done, the love that you have for his name or theservices you have done, and are stil doing, for the holy people of God. |
| 11 Bramiamo, però, che ognuno di voi dimostri la stessa premura per il pieno adempimento della speranza fino alla fine, | 11 Our desire is that every one of you should go on showing the same enthusiasm til the ultimatefulfilment of your hope, |
| 12 onde non fiacchi diveniate, ma imitatori di coloro che, mediante la fede e l’attesa paziente, ereditano le promesse. | 12 never growing careless, but taking as your model those who by their faith and perseverance are heirsof the promises. |
| 13 Dio, infatti, quando fece ad Abramo la promessa, non potendo giurare per uno più grande, giurò per se stesso, | 13 When God made the promise to Abraham, he swore by his own self, since there was no one greaterhe could swear by: |
| 14 dicendo: Sì, certamente, io ti ricolmerò di benedizioni e largamente ti moltiplicherò. | 14 I will shower blessings on you and give you many descendants. |
| 15 E così, avendo egli pazientemente atteso, conseguì la promessa. | 15 Because of that, Abraham persevered and received fulfilment of the promise. |
| 16 Gli uomini, infatti, giurano per uno più grande, e per essi il giuramento a conferma è la fine di ogni controversia. | 16 Human beings, of course, swear an oath by something greater than themselves, and between them,confirmation by an oath puts an end to al dispute. |
| 17 Allo stesso modo Iddio, volendo più chiaramente dimostrare agli eredi della promessa l’immutabilità del suo proposito, si fece mallevadore con giuramento, | 17 In the same way, when God wanted to show the heirs of the promise even more clearly howunalterable his plan was, he conveyed it by an oath |

| 20 dove precursore per noi entrò Gesù, divenuto sommo sacerdote in eterno secondo l’ordine di Melchisedec. | 20 where Jesus has entered as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest for ever, of theorder of Melchizedek. |
