| 3 e comandate loro: “Di qui, dal Giordano, dal luogo dove si sono fermati i piedi dei sacerdoti, togliete dodici pietre che trasporterete con voi e deporrete nel luogo dove passerete la notte”». | 3 and instruct them to take up twelve stones from this spot in the bed of the Jordan where the priests have been standing motionless. Carry them over with you, and place them where you are to stay tonight." |

| 5 e disse loro: «Passate davanti all’arca di Jahvè vostro Dio fino in mezzo al Giordano e ciascuno di voi prenda sulle spalle una pietra, secondo il numero delle tribù dei figli di Israele | 5 Joshua said to them: "Go to the bed of the Jordan in front of the ark of the LORD, your God; lift to your shoulders one stone apiece, so that they will equal in number the tribes of the Israelites. |

| 7 voi risponderete loro: “Le acque del Giordano si divisero dinanzi all’arca di Jahvè e quelle pietre sono per i figli di Israele a perpetuo ricordo”». | 7 you shall answer them, 'The waters of the Jordan ceased to flow before the ark of the covenant of the LORD when it crossed the Jordan.' Thus these stones are to serve as a perpetual memorial to the Israelites." |

| 9 Poi Giosuè eresse le dodici pietre in mezzo al Giordano, nel luogo dove si erano posati i piedi dei sacerdoti che portavano l’arca di Jahvè. Là rimangono fino a oggi. | 9 Joshua also had twelve stones set up in the bed of the Jordan on the spot where the priests stood who were carrying the ark of the covenant. They are there to this day. |
| 10 Ora i sacerdoti che portavano l’arca si erano fermati in mezzo al Giordano finché non fosse compiuto quanto Jahvè aveva ordinato che Giosuè comunicasse al popolo; e il popolo passò in fretta. | 10 The priests carrying the ark remained in the bed of the Jordan until everything had been done that the LORD had commanded Joshua to tell the people. The people crossed over quickly, |
| 11 Quando tutto il popolo ebbe terminato di passare, allora passò l’arca di Jahvè con i sacerdoti in testa al popolo. | 11 and when all had reached the other side, the ark of the LORD, borne by the priests, also crossed to its place in front of them. |
| 12 I figli di Ruben, i figli di Gad e metà della tribù di Manasse passarono alla testa dei figli di Israele, come Mosè aveva loro comandato. | 12 The Reubenites, Gadites, and half-tribe of Manasseh, armed, marched in the vanguard of the Israelites, as Moses had ordered. |
| 13 Circa quaranta mila in tenuta di guerra passarono davanti a Jahvè per combattere nelle steppe di Gerico. | 13 About forty thousand troops equipped for battle passed over before the LORD to the plains of Jericho. |
| 14 In quel giorno Jahvè esaltò Giosuè agli occhi di tutto Israele che lo onorò come aveva onorato Mosè durante la sua vita. | 14 That day the LORD exalted Joshua in the sight of all Israel, and thenceforth during his whole life they respected him as they had respected Moses. |
| 15 Jahvè disse a Giosuè: | 15 Then the LORD said to Joshua, |
| 16 «Comanda ai sacerdoti che portano l’arca della Testimonianza di salire dal Giordano». | 16 "Command the priests carrying the ark of the commandments to come up from the Jordan." |
| 17 Giosuè comandò ai sacerdoti: «Salite dal Giordano». | 17 Joshua did so, |
| 18 Ora, mentre i sacerdoti che portavano l’arca dell’alleanza salivano dal Giordano e la pianta dei loro piedi toccava la riva, le acque del Giordano si riversarono nel letto e continuarono a scorrere come prima fin sopra le rive. | 18 and when the priests carrying the ark of the covenant of the LORD had come up from the bed of the Jordan, as the soles of their feet regained the dry ground, the waters of the Jordan resumed their course and as before overflowed all its banks. |
| 19 Il dieci del primo mese il popolo passò il Giordano e si accampò a Galgala, a est di Gerico. | 19 The people came up from the Jordan on the tenth day of the first month, and camped in Gilgal on the eastern limits of Jericho. |
| 20 Giosuè rizzò in Galgala le dodici pietre che erano state prese nel Giordano. | 20 At Gilgal Joshua set up the twelve stones which had been taken from the Jordan, |
| 21 Allora disse ai figli di Israele: «Quando i vostri figli domanderanno un giorno ai loro padri: “Che significano quelle pietre?”, | 21 saying to the Israelites, "In the future, when the children among you ask their fathers what these stones mean, |
| 22 voi darete loro desta spiegazione: “Israele ha passato questo Giordano all’asciutto, | 22 you shall inform them, 'Israel crossed the Jordan here on dry ground.' |
| 23 poiché Jahvè vostro Dio ha asciugato innanzi a voi le acque del Giordano, finché non foste passati, come Jahvè vostro Dio aveva fatto per il Mare dei Giunchi che aveva asciugato davanti a voi finché non foste passati | 23 For the LORD, your God, dried up the waters of the Jordan in front of you until you crossed over, just as the LORD, your God, had done at the Red Sea, which he dried up in front of us until we crossed over; |
| 24 affinché tutti i popoli della terra sappiano quanto sia potente la mano di Jahvè e voi stessi abbiate sempre il timore di Jahvè vostro Dio”» | 24 in order that all the peoples of the earth may learn that the hand of the LORD is mighty, and that you may fear the LORD, your God, forever." |
