| 1 Allora Giosuè convocò i figli di Ruben, i figli di Gad e metà della tribù di Manasse | 1 At the same time Josue called the Rubenites, and the Gadites, and the half tribe of Manasses, |
| 2 e disse loro: « Voi avete osservato quanto vi ha comandato Mosè, servitore di Jahve, e avete ascoltato la mia voce in tutti gli ordini che vi ho dato. | 2 And said to them: You have done all that Moses the servant of the Lord commanded you: you have also obeyed me in all things, |
| 3 Voi non avete abbandonato i vostri fratelli, nonostante la lunga campagna durata fino a oggi, e avete eseguito alla lettera il comando di Jahve vostro Dio. | 3 Neither have you left your brethren this long time, until this present day, keeping the commandment of the Lord your God. |
| 4 Ora poichè Jahve vostro Dio ha procurato il riposo ai vostri fratelli, come aveva promesso, ritornate pure alle vostre tende, nel paese che vi appartiene e che Mosè, servitore di Jahve, vi ha assegnato al di là del Giordano. | 4 Therefore as the Lord your God hath given your brethren rest and peace, as he promised: return, and go to your dwellings, and to the land of your possession, which Moses the servant of the Lord gave you beyond the Jordan: |
| 5 Soltanto badate bene di mettere in pratica i precetti e la legge che Mosè, servitore di Jahve, vi ha imposto: di amare Jahve vostro Dio, di camminare in tutte le sue vie, di osservare i suoi comandamenti, restando uniti a lui e servendolo con tutto il cuore e con tutta l’anima » | 5 Yet so that you observe attentively, and in work fulfil the commandment and the law which Moses the servant of the Lord commanded you: that you love the Lord your God, and walk in all his ways, and keep all his commandments, and cleave to him, and serve him with all your heart, and with all your soul. |
| 6 Giosuè li benedisse e li congedò; essi ritornarono agli accampamenti, | 6 And Josue blessed them, and sent them away, and they returned to their dwellings. |
| 7 A metà della tribù di Manasse Mosè aveva assegnato un territorio in Bashan, mentre all’altra metà Giosuè lo aveva assegnato accanto ai loro fratelli sulla riva occidentale del Giordano. Inoltre, quando Giosuè li rimandò alle loro tende e li benedisse, | 7 Now to half the tribe of Manasses, Moses had given a possession in Basan: and therefore to the half that remained, Josue gave a lot among the rest of their brethren beyond the Jordan to the west. And when he sent them away to their dwellings and had blessed them, |
| 8 aggiunse loro: « Tornate pure alle vostre tende con grandi ricchezze, con moltissimo bestiame, con argento, oro, bronzo, ferro e vesti in grande quantità; però dividete con i vostri fratelli il bottino tolto ai vostri nemici ». | 8 He said to them : With much substance and riches, you return to your settlements, with silver and gold, brass and iron, and variety of raiment: divide the prey of your enemies with your brethren. |
| 9 I figli di Ruben e i figli di Gad partirono con metà della tribù di Manasse e lasciarono i figli di Israele a Silo nel paese di Canaan, per rientrare nel paese di Galaad, territorio che apparteneva loro e dove si erano fissati, secondo l’ordine che Jahve aveva trasmesso per mezzo di Mosè. | 9 So the children of Ruben, and the children of Gad, and the half tribe of Manasses returned, and parted from the children of Israel in Silo, which is in Chanaan, to go into Galaad the land of their possession, which they had obtained according to the commandment of the Lord by the hand of Moses. |
| 10 Quando furono arrivati ai Ghelilot del Giordano, che sono ancora nella terra di Canaan, i figli di Ruben, di Gad e di metà della tribù di Manasse eressero là un altare al disopra del Giordano, un altare di proporzioni grandiose. | 10 And when they were come to the banks of the Jordan, in the land of Chanaan, they built an altar immensely great near the Jordan. |
| 11 Il fatto fu risaputo dai figli di Israele. «Ecco» si diceva «i dali di Ruben e i figli di Gad e metà della tribù di Manasse hanno eretto un altare di fronte al paese di Canaan, verso i Ghelilot del Giordano, al di là del territorio dei figli di Israele ». | 11 And when the children of Israel had heard of it, and certain messengers had brought them an account that the children of Ruben, and of Cad, and the half tribe of Manasses had built an altar in the land of Chanaan, upon the banks of the Jordan, over against the children of Israel: |
| 12 A questa notizia tutta la comunità dei figli di Israele si riunì a Silo per marciare contro di loro e muovere loro guerra. | 12 They all assembled in Silo, to go up and fight against them. |
| 13 Ma i figli di Israele mandarono presso i figli di Ruben e presso i figli di Gad e metà della tribù di Manasse, al paese di Galaad, il sacerdote Pinkhas, figlio di Eleazaro, | 13 And in the mean time they sent to them into the land of Galaad, Phinees the son of Eleazar the priest, |
| 14 e con lui dieci principi, uno per ciascuna tribù di Israele e ciascuno dei quali era capo della sua casata nelle migliaia di Israele. | 14 And ten princes with him, one of every tribe. |
| 15 Quando essi furono arrivati presso i figli di Ruben e i figli di Gad e metà della tribù di Manasse nel paese di Galaad, dissero loro: | 15 Who came to the children of Ruben, and of Gad, and the half tribe of Manasses, into the land of Galaad, and said to them: |
| 16 « Così dice tutta la comunità di Jahve: ‘“ Che significa questa infedeltà che avete commesso contro il Dio di Israele? Perchè vi staccate oggi da Jahve costruendovi un altare che è un’aperta ribellione contro di lui? | 16 Thus saith all the people of the Lord: What meaneth this transgression? Why have you forsaken the Lord the God of Israel, building a sacrilegious altar, and revolting from the worship of him? |
| 17 Non ci basta l’iniquità di Peor della quale non siamo riusciti a purificarci fino a oggi, nonostante il flagello che colpì il popolo di Jahve? | 17 Is it a small thing to you that you sinned with Beelphegor, and the stain of that crime remaineth in us to this day? and many of the people perished. |
| 18 Dunque, poichè voi oggi rinunciate a seguire Jahve, ne viene che oggi vi ribellate contro di lui e domani la sua collera si infiammerà contro tutta la comunità di Israele. | 18 And you have forsaken the Lord to day, and to morrow his wrath will rage against all Israel. |
| 19 Se la terra di vostra proprietà vi sembra impura, trasferitevi nella terra di proprietà di Jahve, là dove si trova la Dimora di Jahve e prendete un possesso fra di noi. Ma non ribellatevi a Jahve e non trascinateci nella vostra rivolta, erigendo un altare rivale dell’altare di Jahve nostro Dio. | 19 But if you think the land of your possession to be unclean, pass over to the land wherein is the tabernacle of the Lord, and dwell among us: only depart not from the Lord, and from our society, by building an altar beside the altar of the Lord our God. |
| 20 Quando Achan, figlio di Zerakh, commise una infedeltà contro l’anatema non ricadde forse l’ira di Jahve sopra tutta la comunità di Israele, sebbene fosse un solo uomo? Non dovette egli morire per sua colpa? ” ». | 20 Did not Achan the son of Zare transgress the commandment of the Lord, and his wrath lay upon all the people of Israel? And he was but one man, and would to God he alone had perished in his wickedness. |
| 21 I figli di Ruben e i figli di Gad e metà della tribù di Manasse risposero ai capi di mille di Israele: | 21 And the children of Ruben, and of Gad, and of the half tribe of Manasses answered the princes of the embassage of Israel: |
| 22 « Dio, Dio, Jahve; Dio, Dio, Jahve! Lui lo sa e Israele lo apprenda. Se fu per spirito di ribellione e infedeltà verso Jahve, egli non ci scampi in questo giorno! | 22 The Lord the most mighty God, the Lord the most mighty God, he knoweth, and Israel also shall understand: If with the design of transgression we have set up this altar, let him not save us, but punish us immediately: |
| 23 Se ci siamo costruiti un altare per abbandonare Jahve e per offrirvi olocausti e oblazioni e per compiervi sacrifici pacifici, Jahve stesso ce ne chieda conto! | 23 And if we did it with that mind, that we might lay upon it holocausts, and sacrifice, and victims of peace offerings, let him require and judge: |
| 24 Ma, in verità, noi abbiamo fatto ciò per una certa inquietudine pensando: un giorno i vostri figli potrebbero dire ai nostri: “ Che cosa c’è tra voi e Jahve Dio di Israele? | 24 And not rather with this thought and design, that we should say: To morrow your children will say to our children: What have you to do with the Lord the God of Israel? |
| 25 Jahve ha posto un limite tra noi e voi, figli di Ruben e figli di Gad, ed è il Giordano. Voi non avete alcuna parte con Jahve! ”. Così i vostri figli potrebbero distogliere i nostri dal culto di Jahve. | 25 The Lord hath put the river Jordan for a border between us and you, O ye children of Ruben, and ye children of Gad: and therefore you have no part in the Lord. And by this occasion you children shall turn away our children from the fear of the Lord. We therefore thought, it best, |
| 26 Perciò abbiamo detto: ‘“ Costruiamoci un altare non per offrirvi olocausti e sacrifici, | 26 And said: Let us build us an altar, not for holocausts, nor to offer victims, |
| 27 ma perchè sia testimonio fra noi e fra i nostri discendenti dopo di noi, che intendiamo rendere un culto a Jahve con i nostri olocausti e con i nostri sacrifici pacifici e perchè un giorno i vostri figli non dicano ai nostri: Voi non avete nessun diritto verso Jahve! ”. | 27 But for a testimony between us and you, and our posterity and yours, that we may serve the Lord, and that we may have a right to offer both holocausts, and victims and sacrifices of peace offerings: and that your children to morrow may not say to our children: You have no part in the Lord. |
| 28 Abbiamo dunque pensato: se un giorno così parleranno a noi e alla nostra discendenza, noi risponderemo: “ Guardate la forma dell’altare di Jahve che hanno fatto i nostri padri; non è per olocausto nè per sacrifici, ma solo perchè sia un testimonio fra noi e voi ”. | 28 And if they will say so, they shall answer them: Behold the altar of the Lord, which our fathers made, not for holocausts, nor for sacrifice, but for a testimony between us and you. |
| 29 Lungi da noi il pensiero di volerci ribellare a Jahve e di volerlo oggi abbandonare erigendo un altare per olocausti, sacrifici e oblazioni, rivale dell’altare di Jahve nostro Dio, che sta innanzi alla Tenda ». | 29 God keep us from any such wickedness that we should revolt from the Lord, and leave off following his steps, by building an altar to offer holocausts, and sacrifices, and victims, beside the altar of the Lord our God, which is erected before his tabernacle. |
| 30 Quando il sacerdote Pinkhas e i principi della comunità e i capi di mille di Israele, che erano con lui, udirono queste parole pronunciate dai figli di Ruben e dai figli di Gad e da metà della tribù di Manasse, ne rimasero soddisfatti. | 30 And when Phinees the priest, and the princes of the embassage, who were with him, had heard this, they were satisfied: and they admitted most willingly the words of the children of Ruben, and Gad, and of the half tribe of Manasses. |
| 31 Il sacerdote Pinkhas, figlio di Eleazaro, disse ai figli di Ruben, di Gad e di metà della tribù di Manasse: « Oggi riconosciamo che Jahve è in mezzo a voi, perchè non avete commesso questa infedeltà contro Jahve; così avete salvato i figli di Israele dalle mani di Jahve». | 31 And Phinees the priest the son of Eleazar said to them: Now we know that the Lord is with us, because you are not guilty of this revolt, and you have delivered the children of Israel from the hand of the Lord. |
| 32 Quindi il sacerdote Pinkhas, figlio di Eleazaro, e i principi lasciarono i figli di Ruben e i figli di Gad e metà della tribù di Manasse dal paese di Galaad per ritornare alla terra di Canaan dai figli di Israele. Esposta a questi la cosa, | 32 And he returned with the princes from the children of Ruben and Gad, out of the land of Galaad, into the land of Chanaan, to the children of Israel, and brought them word again. |
| 33 i figli di Israele ne rimasero soddisfatti, benedissero Jahve e non parlarono più di muovere guerra contro di loro e di devastare il paese abitato dai figli di Ruben e dai figli di Gad. | 33 And the saying pleased all that heard it. And the children of Israel praised God, and they no longer said that they would go up against them, and fight, and destroy the land of their possession. |
| 34 I figli di Ruben e i figli di Gad chiamarono Ed l’altare perchè dissero: « Esso è testimonio fra di noi che Jahve è il vero Dio ». | 34 And the children of Ruben, and the children of Cad called the altar which they had built, Our testimony, that the Lord is God. |
