| 1 Adoni-zedek, re di Gerusalemme, quando udì che Giosuè aveva preso Ai e l’aveva votata all’anatema, infliggendo ad Ai e al suo re lo stesso trattamento che a Gerico e al suo re, e che gli abitanti di Gabaon avevano fatto pace con Israele e che si trovavano in mezzo a loro, | 1 When Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem heard how Joshua had taken Ai, and had utterly destroyed it, doing to Ai and its king as he had done to Jericho and its king, and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were among them, |
| 2 ebbe grande timore, perché Gabaon era una città importante quanto una delle città regali, anche più grande di Ai e tutti i suoi uomini erano prodi. | 2 he feared greatly, because Gibeon was a great city, like one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than Ai, and all its men were mighty. |
| 3 Perciò Adoni-zedek, re di Gerusalemme, mandò a dire a Hoham re di Hebron, a Piream re di Jarmut, a Jafia re di Lachish e a Debir re di Eglon: | 3 So Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem sent to Hoham king of Hebron, to Piram king of Jarmuth, to Japhia king of Lachish, and to Debir king of Eglon, saying, |
| 4 «Salite da me e aiutatemi a battere Gabaon, perché ha fatto la pace con Giosuè e con i figli di Israele». | 4 "Come up to me, and help me, and let us smite Gibeon; for it has made peace with Joshua and with the people of Israel." |
| 5 Dopo essersi uniti, i cinque re degli Amorrei, il re di Gerusalemme, il re di Hebron, il re di Jarmut, il re di Lachish e il re di Eglon salirono con tutti i loro accampamenti; si accamparono contro Gabaon e aprirono contro essa le ostilità. | 5 Then the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon, gathered their forces, and went up with all their armies and encamped against Gibeon, and made war against it. |
| 6 Ma gli uomini di Gabaon mandarono a dire a Giosuè nell’accampamento di Galgala: «Non ritirare la mano dai tuoi servitori. Sali in fretta da noi e salvaci. Portaci aiuto perché tutti i re degli Amorrei che abitano la montagna hanno fatto lega contro di noi». | 6 And the men of Gibeon sent to Joshua at the camp in Gilgal, saying, "Do not relax your hand from your servants; come up to us quickly, and save us, and help us; for all the kings of the Amorites that dwell in the hill country are gathered against us." |
| 7 Da Galgala Giosuè salì con tutta la gente di guerra, tutti i prodi guerrieri. | 7 So Joshua went up from Gilgal, he and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valor. |
| 8 Jahvè disse a Giosuè: «Non temerli, perché io li metto in tuo potere; nessuno di loro potrà resistere a te». | 8 And the LORD said to Joshua, "Do not fear them, for I have given them into your hands; there shall not a man of them stand before you." |
| 9 Giosuè piombò su di loro all’improvviso, dopo aver marciato tutta la notte da Galgala. | 9 So Joshua came upon them suddenly, having marched up all night from Gilgal. |
| 10 Jahvè li mise in rotta di fronte a Israele che inflisse loro una grande sconfitta a Gabaon, li inseguì poi nella direzione della salita di Bethoron e li batté fino ad Azeka e fino a Makkeda. | 10 And the LORD threw them into a panic before Israel, who slew them with a great slaughter at Gibeon, and chased them by the way of the ascent of Beth-horon, and smote them as far as Azekah and Makkedah. |
| 11 Ora, quando essi fuggivano innanzi a Israele ed erano sulla discesa di Bethoron, Jahvè scagliò dal cielo sopra di loro, fino ad Azeka, grosse pietre che li annientarono. Ne morirono più per le pietre della grandine che non per la spada dei figli di Israele. | 11 And as they fled before Israel, while they were going down the ascent of Beth-horon, the LORD threw down great stones from heaven upon them as far as Azekah, and they died; there were more who died because of the hailstones than the men of Israel killed with the sword. |
| 12 Allora Giosuè parlò a Jahvè, il giorno stesso in cui Jahvè mise gli Amorrei nelle mani dei figli di Israele, e disse sotto gli occhi di Israele: «O sole, fermati su Gabaon e tu, luna, sulla valle di Aialon!» | 12 Then spoke Joshua to the LORD in the day when the LORD gave the Amorites over to the men of Israel; and he said in the sight of Israel, "Sun, stand thou still at Gibeon, and thou Moon in the valley of Aijalon." |
| 13 Il sole si fermò e la luna restò immobile finché il popolo non si fu vendicato dei suoi nemici. Non sta scritto forse nel libro del Giusto? Il sole restò immobile in mezzo al cielo e non si affrettò al tramonto quasi un giorno intero. | 13 And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the nation took vengeance on their enemies. Is this not written in the Book of Jashar? The sun stayed in the midst of heaven, and did not hasten to go down for about a whole day. |
| 14 Non ci fu mai né prima né dopo un giorno come quello, quando Jahvè ascoltò la voce di un uomo, perché Jahvè combatteva per Israele! | 14 There has been no day like it before or since, when the LORD hearkened to the voice of a man; for the LORD fought for Israel. |
| 15 Quindi Giosuè e tutto Israele con lui ritornò all’accampamento di Galgala. | 15 Then Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp at Gilgal. |
| 16 Quei cinque re si diedero alla fuga e si nascosero nella caverna di Makkeda. | 16 These five kings fled, and hid themselves in the cave at Makkedah. |
| 17 Ciò fu riferito a Giosuè: «Si sono trovati i cinque re; essi si sono nascosti nella caverna di Makkeda». | 17 And it was told Joshua, "The five kings have been found, hidden in the cave at Makkedah." |
| 18 Allora Giosuè rispose: «Rotolate grosse pietre all’imboccatura della caverna e mettetevi uomini per fare la guardia. | 18 And Joshua said, "Roll great stones against the mouth of the cave, and set men by it to guard them; |
| 19 Voi però non fermatevi ma inseguite i vostri nemici, tagliate loro la ritirata e non lasciateli rientrare nelle loro città, perché Jahvè li ha messi nelle vostre mani». | 19 but do not stay there yourselves, pursue your enemies, fall upon their rear, do not let them enter their cities; for the LORD your God has given them into your hand." |
| 20 Quando Giosuè e i figli di Israele ebbero finito di farne grandissima strage — soltanto alcuni fuggiaschi che erano scampati, avevano raggiunto le città fortificate — | 20 When Joshua and the men of Israel had finished slaying them with a very great slaughter, until they were wiped out, and when the remnant which remained of them had entered into the fortified cities, |
| 21 allora tutto l’esercito ritornò sano è salvo all’accampamento a Makkeda, presso Giosuè, e nessuno osò schernire i figli di Israele. | 21 all the people returned safe to Joshua in the camp at Makkedah; not a man moved his tongue against any of the people of Israel. |
| 22 Giosuè allora disse: «Aprite la bocca della caverna, fate uscire dalla caverna quei cinque re e conduceteli a me». | 22 Then Joshua said, "Open the mouth of the cave, and bring those five kings out to me from the cave." |
| 23 Eseguirono e gli fecero uscire dalla caverna quei cinque re: il re di Gerusalemme, il re di Hebron, il re di Jarmut, il re di Lachish e il re di Eglon. | 23 And they did so, and brought those five kings out to him from the cave, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon. |
| 24 Quando quei re furono condotti da Giosuè, egli convocò tutti i figli di Israele e disse agli ufficiali degli uomini di guerra che lo avevano accompagnato: «Avvicinatevi e mettete i piedi sul collo di questi re». Essi si avvicinarono e misero i piedi sul collo di quelli. | 24 And when they brought those kings out to Joshua, Joshua summoned all the men of Israel, and said to the chiefs of the men of war who had gone with him, "Come near, put your feet upon the necks of these kings." Then they came near, and put their feet on their necks. |
| 25 Giosuè disse loro: «Non temete e non perdetevi di coraggio: siate forti e coraggiosi, perché Jahvè tratterà così tutti i nemici contro i quali dovete combattere». | 25 And Joshua said to them, "Do not be afraid or dismayed; be strong and of good courage; for thus the LORD will do to all your enemies against whom you fight." |
| 26 Dopo ciò, Giosuè diede il colpo fatale e li fece impiccare a cinque pali dove rimasero appesi fino a sera. | 26 And afterward Joshua smote them and put them to death, and he hung them on five trees. And they hung upon the trees until evening; |
| 27 Ma verso il tramonto del sole, peri ordine di Giosuè, furono calati dagli alberi e gettati in una fossa della caverna dove si erano nascosti; all’imboccatura della caverna furono poste grosse pietre che rimangono fino a oggi. | 27 but at the time of the going down of the sun, Joshua commanded, and they took them down from the trees, and threw them into the cave where they had hidden themselves, and they set great stones against the mouth of the cave, which remain to this very day. |
| 28 Lo stesso giorno, Giosuè si impadronì di Makkeda e la passò, insieme con il suo re, a fil di spada, dopo averla votata all’anatema con ogni vivente che vi si trovava, senza lasciarvi nessun superstite; trattò il re di Makkeda come aveva trattato il re di Gerico. | 28 And Joshua took Makkedah on that day, and smote it and its king with the edge of the sword; he utterly destroyed every person in it, he left none remaining; and he did to the king of Makkedah as he had done to the king of Jericho. |
| 29 Poi Giosuè con tutto Israele passò da Makkeda a Libna e attaccò Libna. | 29 Then Joshua passed on from Makkedah, and all Israel with him, to Libnah, and fought against Libnah; |
| 30 Jahvè mise anche questa città e il suo re nelle mani di Israele che la passò a fil di spada con ogni vivente che vi si trovava, senza lasciarvi nessun superstite; trattò il suo re come aveva trattato il re di Gerico. | 30 and the LORD gave it also and its king into the hand of Israel; and he smote it with the edge of the sword, and every person in it; he left none remaining in it; and he did to its king as he had done to the king of Jericho. |
| 31 Giosuè con tutto Israele passò da Libna a Lachish, vi si accampò e l’assaltò. | 31 And Joshua passed on from Libnah, and all Israel with him, to Lachish, and laid siege to it, and assaulted it: |
| 32 Jahvè mise anche Lachish nelle mani di Israele che la prese al secondo giorno e la passò a fil di spada con ogni vivente che vi si trovava, secondo quanto aveva fatto a Libna. | 32 and the LORD gave Lachish into the hand of Israel, and he took it on the second day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and every person in it, as he had done to Libnah. |
| 33 Allora il re di Gezer, Horam, mosse per postare aiuto a Lachish, ma Giosuè batté lui e la sua gente così da non lasciare alcun superstite. | 33 Then Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lachish; and Joshua smote him and his people, until he left none remaining. |
| 34 Giosuè e tutto Israele passarono da Lachish a Eglon, la investirono, la attaccarono | 34 And Joshua passed on with all Israel from Lachish to Eglon; and they laid siege to it, and assaulted it; |
| 35 e la presero lo stesso giorno. Passata a fil di spada essa fu votata in quel giorno all’anatema con tutto ciò che vi respirava, secondo quanto aveva fatto a Lachish. | 35 and they took it on that day, and smote it with the edge of the sword; and every person in it he utterly destroyed that day, as he had done to Lachish. |
| 36 Da Eglon Giosuè con tutto Israele salì a Hebron e le diede l’assalto. | 36 Then Joshua went up with all Israel from Eglon to Hebron; and they assaulted it, |
| 37 La presero e la passarono a fil di spada con il re, i villaggi e con ogni vivente che vi si trovava, senza lasciarvi nessun superstite, secondo quanto aveva fatto a Eglon. Questo luogo e tutto ciò che vi respirava fu votato all’anatema. | 37 and took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and its king and its towns, and every person in it; he left none remaining, as he had done to Eglon, and utterly destroyed it with every person in it. |
| 38 Allora Giosuè con tutto Israele si volse contro Debir e le diede l’assalto; | 38 Then Joshua, with all Israel, turned back to Debir and assaulted it, |
| 39 se ne impadronì con il suo re e con tutte le dipendenze, li passò a fil di spada con ogni vivente che vi si trovava, senza lasciarvi nessun superstite, secondo quanto aveva fatto a Eglon. La votò all’anatema con tutte le persone che vi si trovavano. Trattò Debir e il suo re come aveva trattato Hebron e il suo re e come aveva trattato Libna e il suo re. | 39 and he took it with its king and all its towns; and they smote them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed every person in it; he left none remaining; as he had done to Hebron and to Libnah and its king, so he did to Debir and to its king. |
| 40 Così Giosuè batté tutto il paese: la montagna, il Negheb, la Shefela, le pendici e tutti i loro re. Non lasciò alcun superstite e votò all’anatema ogni vivente, come Jahvè, Dio di Israele, aveva prescritto. | 40 So Joshua defeated the whole land, the hill country and the Negeb and the lowland and the slopes, and all their kings; he left none remaining, but utterly destroyed all that breathed, as the LORD God of Israel commanded. |
| 41 Giosuè batté da Kadesh-Barne fino a Gaza loro e tutta la terra di Goshen fino a Gabaon. | 41 And Joshua defeated them from Kadesh-barnea to Gaza, and all the country of Goshen, as far as Gibeon. |
| 42 Giosuè conquistò in una sola volta tutti questi re e il loro territorio, perché Jahvè Dio di Israele combatteva per Israele. | 42 And Joshua took all these kings and their land at one time, because the LORD God of Israel fought for Israel. |
| 43 Then Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp at Gilgal. |
