| 1 « Allora Jahve mi disse: “ Taglia due tavole di pietra come le prime e sali da me sul monte; costruisci anche unm’arca di legno. | 1 'Yahweh then said to me, "Cut two stone tablets like the first ones, and come up to me on themountain. Make an ark of wood; |
| 2 Sulle tavole scriverò le parole che si trovavano sulle prime tavole che tu hai spezzato, e tu le metterai nell’arca ”. | 2 on the tablets I shal inscribe the words that were on the first tablets, which you broke; put them in theark." |
| 3 Feci dunque un’arca di legno di acacia, tagliai le due tavole di pietra come le prime e salii sul monte con le due tavole in mano. | 3 So I made an ark of acacia wood, cut two stone tablets like the first and went up the mountain with thetwo tablets in my hand. |
| 4 Come la prima volta, Jahve scrisse sulle tavole le dieci parole che vi aveva detto sul monte, in mezzo al fuoco, nel giorno dell’assemblea, e poi me le consegnò. | 4 And he inscribed the tablets, as he had inscribed them before, with the Ten Words which Yahweh hadsaid to you on the mountain, from the heart of the fire, on the day of the Assembly. Yahweh then gave them tome. |
| 5 Io mi voltai, discesi dal monte e collocai le tavole nell’arca che avevo fatto: qui esse restarono come Jahve mi aveva ordinato. | 5 I turned and came down from the mountain and put the tablets in the ark I had made, and there theystayed, as Yahweh had commanded me. |
| 6 I figli di Israele levarono le tende da Beerot-Bene-Jakan per Mosera dove Aronne morì e fu sepolto; Eleazaro suo figlio divenne sacerdote al suo posto. | 6 'The Israelites left the wel s of the Bene-Jaakan for Moserah, where Aaron died; he was buried there,and his son Eleazar succeeded him in the priesthood. |
| 7 Di là levarono le tende per Ghidgad e da Ghidgad per Jotbata, terra dai torrenti di acqua. | 7 From there, they set out for Gudgodah, and from Gudgodah for Jotbathah, an area rich in streams. |
| 8 In quel tempo, Jahve destinò la tribù di Levi a portare l’arca dell’alleanza di Jahve, a stare dinanzi a Jahve, a servirlo e; a benedire il suo nome come è ancora oggi. | 8 Yahweh then set apart the tribe of Levi to carry the ark of Yahweh's covenant, to stand in thepresence of Yahweh, to serve him and to bless in his name, as they stil do today. |
| 9 Perciò Levi non ha parte nè eredità con i fratelli: Jahve è la sua eredità, come gli aveva promesso. | 9 This is why Levi has no share or heritage with his brothers: Yahweh is his heritage, as Yahweh yourGod then told him. |
| 10 lo poi, come la prima volta, rimasi sul monte quaranta giorni e quaranta notti. Anche questa volta Jahve mi ascoltò, non volle distruggerti. | 10 'And, as before, I stayed on the mountain for forty days and forty nights. And again Yahweh heardmy prayer and agreed not to destroy you. |
| 11 Jahve mi disse: “ Alzati, va’ a metterti alla testa di questo popolo affinchè entrino in possesso della terra che ho giurato ai loro padri di dare loro ”. | 11 And Yahweh said to me, "Be on your way at the head of this people, so that they can go and takepossession of the country which I swore to their ancestors that I would give them." |
| 12 Ora, o Israele, che cosa chiede a te Jahve tuo Dio se non di temere Jahve tuo Dio, di seguire interamente il suo cammino, di amarlo, di rendere un culto a Jahve tuo Dio con tutto il cuore e con tutta l’anima, | 12 'And now, Israel, what does Yahweh your God ask of you? Only this: to fear Yahweh your God, tofol ow all his ways, to love him, to serve Yahweh your God with al your heart and al your soul, |
| 13 di osservare i precetti di Jahve e gli statuti che oggi ti prescrivo per il tuo bene? | 13 to keep the commandments and laws of Yahweh, which I am laying down for you today for your owngood. |
| 14 Ecco! Il cielo e i cieli del cielo, la terra e quanto è in essa sono di Jahve tuo Dio, | 14 'Look, to Yahweh your God belong heaven and the heaven of heavens, the earth and everything onit; |
| 15 tuttavia Jahve si è unito ai tuoi padri per amore di essi e, dopo di loro, tra tutti I popoli, ha scelto la loro discendenza, voi, come è ancora oggi. | 15 yet it was on your ancestors, for love of them, that Yahweh set his heart to love them, and he chosetheir descendants after them, you yourselves, out of all nations, up to the present day. |
| 16 Circoncidete quindi il prepuzio del vostro cuore e non irrigidite più il vostro collo, | 16 Circumcise your heart then and be obstinate no longer; |
| 17 poichè Jahve vostro Dio è il Dio degli dèi, è Signore dei signori, è Dio grande, forte e terribile che non guarda in faccia nè prende regali, | 17 for Yahweh your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, triumphant and terrible, free of favouritism, never to be bribed. |
| 18 fa giustizia all’orfano e alla vedova, ama il forestiero e gli dà pane e vestito. | 18 He it is who sees justice done for the orphan and the widow, who loves the stranger and gives himfood and clothing. |
| 19 Amate, dunque, il forestiero poichè siete stati forestieri nella terra d’Egitto. | 19 (Love the stranger then, for you were once strangers in Egypt.) |
| 20 Temerai Jahve tuo Dio, gli renderai un culto, ti legherai a lui e giurerai in suo nome. | 20 Yahweh your God is the one whom you must fear and serve; to him you must hold firm; in his nametake your oaths. |
| 21 Egli è la tua lode, egli è il tuo Dio: ha compiuto per te quelle cose grandi e terribili che i tuoi occhi hanno visto. | 21 Him you must praise, he is your God: for you he has done these great and terrible things which youhave seen for yourselves; |
| 22 Quando i tuoi padri sono discesi in Egitto erano settanta persone e Jahve tuo Dio ti ha reso ora numeroso come le stelle del cielo » | 22 and, although your ancestors numbered only seventy persons when they went down to Egypt,Yahweh your God has now made you as many as the stars of heaven.' |
