1 Pas plus que la neige à l'été ou la pluie à la moisson, les honneurs ne conviennent au sot.	1 Like snow in summer, or rain in harvest, honor for a fool is out of place.
2 Le passereau s'échappe, l'hirondelle s'envole, ainsi la malédiction gratuite n'atteint pas son but.	2 Like the sparrow in its flitting, like the swallow in its flight, a curse uncalled-for arrives nowhere.
3 Le fouet pour le cheval, la bride pour l'âne, pour l'échine des sots, le bâton.	3 The whip for the horse, the bridle for the ass, and the rod for the back of fools.
4 Ne répond pas à l'insensé selon sa folie, de peur de lui devenir semblable, toi aussi.	4 Answer not the fool according to his folly, lest you too become like him.
5 Réponds à l'insensé selon sa folie, de peur qu'il ne soit sage à ses propres yeux.	5 Answer the fool according to his folly, lest he become wise in his own eyes.
6 Il se mutile, il s'abreuve de violence, celui qui envoie un message par l'entremise d'un sot.	6 He cuts off his feet, he drinks down violence, who sends messages by a fool.
7 Mal assurées, les jambes du boiteux; ainsi un proverbe dans la bouche des sots.	7 A proverb in the mouth of a fool hangs limp, like crippled legs.
8 C'est attacher la pierre à la fronde que de rendre honneur à un sot.	8 Like one who entangles the stone in the sling is he who gives honor to a fool.
9 Une ronce pousse dans la main d'un ivrogne comme un proverbe dans la bouche d'un sot.	9 Like a thorn stick brandished by the hand of a drunkard is a proverb in the mouth of fools.
10 Un archer blessant tout le monde: tel est celui qui embauche le sot et l'ivrogne qui passent.	10 Like an archer wounding all who pass by is he who hires a drunken fool.
11 Comme le chien revient à son vomissement, le sot retourne à sa folie.	11 As the dog returns to his vomit, so the fool repeats his folly.
12 Tu vois un homme sage à ses propres yeux? Il y a plus à espérer d'un insensé.	12 You see a man wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him.
13 Le paresseux dit: "Un fauve sur le chemin! un lion par les rues!"	13 The sluggard says, "There is a lion in the street, a lion in the middle of the square!"
14 La porte tourne sur ses gonds, et sur son lit le paresseux.	14 The door turns on its hinges, the sluggard, on his bed!
15 Le paresseux plonge la main dans le plat: la ramener à sa bouche le fatigue!	15 The sluggard loses his hand in the dish; he is too weary to lift it to his mouth.
16 Le paresseux est plus sage à ses propres yeux que sept personnes répondant avec tact.	16 The sluggard imagines himself wiser than seven men who answer with good sense.
17 Il prend par les oreilles un chien qui passe, celui qui s'immisce dans une querelle étrangère.	17 Like the man who seizes a passing dog by the ears is he who meddles in a quarrel not his own.
18 Un homme pris de folie qui lance des traits enflammés, des flèches et la mort:	18 Like a crazed archer scattering firebrands and deadly arrows
19 tel est l'homme qui ment à son compagnon, puis dit: "N'était-ce pas pour plaisanter?"	19 Is the man who deceives his neighbor, and then says, "I was only joking."
20 Faute de bois, le feu s'éteint, faute de calomniateur, la querelle s'apaise.	20 For lack of wood, the fire dies out; and when there is no talebearer, strife subsides.
21 Du charbon sur les braises, du bois sur le feu, tel est l'homme querelleur pour attiser lesdisputes.	21 What a bellows is to live coals, what wood is to fire, such is a contentious man in enkindling strife.
22 Les dires du calomniateur sont de friands morceaux qui descendent jusqu'au fond des entrailles.	22 The words of a talebearer are like dainty morsels that sink into one's inmost being.
23 De l'argent non purifié appliqué sur de l'argile: tels sont lèvres brûlantes et coeur mauvais.	23 Like a glazed finish on earthenware are smooth lips with a wicked heart.
24 Celui qui hait donne le change par ses propos, mais en son sein gît la tromperie;	24 With his lips an enemy pretends, but in his inmost being he maintains deceit;
25 s'il prend un ton cauteleux, ne t'y fie pas, car en son coeur il y a sept abominations.	25 When he speaks graciously, trust him not, for seven abominations are in his heart.
26 La haine peut s'envelopper de ruse, elle révélera sa méchanceté dans l'assemblée.	26 A man may conceal hatred under dissimulation, but his malice will be revealed in the assembly.
27 Qui creuse une fosse y tombe, qui roule une roche, elle revient sur lui.	27 He who digs a pit falls into it; and a stone comes back upon him who rolls it.
28 La langue menteuse hait ses victimes, la bouche enjôleuse provoque la chute.	28 The lying tongue is its owner's enemy, and the flattering mouth works ruin.
