Efesios 5

BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Sed, pues, imitadores de Dios, como hijos queridos,	1 As God's dear children, then, take him as your pattern,
2 y vivid en el amor como Cristo os amó y se entregó por nosotros como oblación y víctima de suave aroma.	2 and fol ow Christ by loving as he loved you, giving himself up for us as an offering and a sweet-smel ingsacrifice to God.
3 La fornicación, y toda impureza o codicia, ni siquiera se mencione entre vosotros, como conviene a los santos.	3 Among you there must be not even a mention of sexual vice or impurity in any of its forms, or greed:this would scarcely become the holy people of God!
4 Lo mismo de la grosería, las necedades o las chocarrerías, cosas que no están bien; sino más bien, acciones de gracias.	4 There must be no foul or salacious talk or coarse jokes -- al this is wrong for you; there should ratherbe thanksgiving.
5 Porque tened entendido que ningún fornicario o impuro o codicioso - que es ser idólatra - participará en la herencia del Reino de Cristo y de Dios.	5 For you can be quite certain that nobody who indulges in sexual immorality or impurity or greed -- whichis worshipping a false god -- can inherit the kingdom of God.
6 Que nadie os engañe con vanas razones, pues por eso viene le cólera de Dios sobre los rebeldes.	6 Do not let anyone deceive you with empty arguments: it is such behaviour that draws down God'sretribution on those who rebel against him.
7 No tengáis parte con ellos.	7 Make sure that you do not throw in your lot with them.
8 Porque en otro tiempo fuisteis tinieblas; mas ahora sois luz en el Señor. Vivid como hijos de la luz;	8 You were darkness once, but now you are light in the Lord; behave as children of light,
9 pues el fruto de la luz consiste en toda bondad, justicia y verdad.	9 for the effects of the light are seen in complete goodness and uprightness and truth.
10 Examinad qué es lo que agrada al Señor,	10 Try to discover what the Lord wants of you,
11 y no participéis en las obras infructuosas de las tinieblas, antes bien, denunciadlas.	11 take no part in the futile works of darkness but, on the contrary, show them up for what they are.
12 Cierto que ya sólo el mencionar las cosas que hacen ocultamente da vergüenza;	12 The things which are done in secret are shameful even to speak of;
13 pero, al ser denunciadas, se manifiestan a la luz.	13 but anything shown up by the light wil be il uminated
14 Pues todo lo que queda manifiesto es luz. Por eso se dice: Despierta tú que duermes, y levántate de entre los muertos, y te iluminará Cristo.	14 and anything illuminated is itself a light. That is why it is said: Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead,and Christ wil shine on you.
15 Así pues, mirad atentamente cómo vivís; que no sea como imprudentes, sino como prudentes;	15 So be very careful about the sort of lives you lead, like intel igent and not like senseless people.
16 aprovechando bien el tiempo presente, porque los días son malos.	16 Make the best of the present time, for it is a wicked age.
17 Por tanto, no seáis insensatos, sino comprended cuál es la voluntad de Señor.	17 This is why you must not be thoughtless but must recognise what is the will of the Lord.
18 No os embriaguéis con vino, que es causa de libertinaje; llenaos más bien del Espíritu.	18 Do not get drunk with wine; this is simply dissipation; be fil ed with the Spirit.
19 Recitad entre vosotros salmos, himnos y cánticos inspirados; cantad y salmodiad en vuestro corazón al Señor,	19 Sing psalms and hymns and inspired songs among yourselves, singing and chanting to the Lord inyour hearts,
20 dando gracias continuamente y por todo a Dios Padre, en nombre de nuestro Señor Jesucristo.	20 always and everywhere giving thanks to God who is our Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
21 Sed sumisos los unos a los otros en el temor de Cristo.	21 Be subject to one another out of reverence for Christ.
22 Las mujeres a sus maridos, como al Señor,	22 Wives should be subject to their husbands as to the Lord,
23 porque el marido es cabeza de la mujer, como Cristo es Cabeza de la Iglesia, el salvador del Cuerpo.	23 since, as Christ is head of the Church and saves the whole body, so is a husband the head of his wife;
24 Así como la Iglesia está sumisa a Cristo, así también las mujeres deben estarlo a sus maridos en todo.	24 and as the Church is subject to Christ, so should wives be to their husbands, in everything.
25 Maridos, amad a vuestras mujeres como Cristo amó a la Iglesia y se entregó a sí mismo por ella,	25 Husbands should love their wives, just as Christ loved the Church and sacrificed himself for her
26 para santificarla, purificándola mediante el baño del agua, en virtud de la palabra,	26 to make her holy by washing her in cleansing water with a form of words,
27 y presentársela resplandeciente a sí mismo; sin que tenga mancha ni arruga ni cosa parecida, sino que sea santa e inmaculada.	27 so that when he took the Church to himself she would be glorious, with no speck or wrinkle or anything like that, but holy and faultless.
28 Así deben amar los maridos a sus mujeres como a sus propios cuerpos. El que ama a su mujer se ama a sí mismo.	28 In the same way, husbands must love their wives as they love their own bodies; for a man to love hiswife is for him to love himself.
29 Porque nadie aborreció jamás su propia carne; antes bien, la alimenta y la cuida con cariño, lo mismo que Cristo a la Iglesia,	29 A man never hates his own body, but he feeds it and looks after it; and that is the way Christ treats theChurch,
30 pues somos miembros de su Cuerpo.	30 because we are parts of his Body.
31 Por eso dejará el hombre a su padre y a su madre y se unirá a su mujer, y los dos se harán una sola carne.	31 This is why a man leaves his father and mother and becomes attached to his wife, and the twobecome one flesh.
32 Gran misterio es éste, lo digo respecto a Cristo y la Iglesia.	32 This mystery has great significance, but I am applying it to Christ and the Church.
33 En todo caso, en cuanto a vosotros, que cada uno ame a su mujer como a sí mismo; y la mujer, que respete al marido.	33 To sum up: you also, each one of you, must love his wife as he loves himself; and let every wiferespect her husband.
