VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
1 Igitur Eliu hæc rursum locutus est :1 Elihu continued his speech. He said:
2 Numquid æqua tibi videtur tua cogitatio,
ut diceres : Justior sum Deo ?
2 Do you think you can prove yourself upright and establish your uprightness before God
3 Dixisti enim : Non tibi placet quod rectum est :
vel quid tibi proderit, si ego peccavero ?
3 by daring to say to him, 'What does it matter to you, or how does it benefit me, whether I have sinnedor not?'
4 Itaque ego respondebo sermonibus tuis,
et amicis tuis tecum.
4 Very well, I shal tel you and your friends as wel .
5 Suspice cælum, et intuere :
et contemplare æthera quod altior te sit.
5 Take a look at the skies and see, observe how high the clouds are above you.
6 Si peccaveris, quid ei nocebis ?
et si multiplicatæ fuerint iniquitates tuæ, quid facies contra eum ?
6 If you sin, how can you affect him? If you heap up crimes, what effect has it on him?
7 Porro si juste egeris, quid donabis ei ?
aut quid de manu tua accipiet ?
7 If you are upright, what do you give him, what benefit does he receive at your hands?
8 Homini qui similis tui est, nocebit impietas tua :
et filium hominis adjuvabit justitia tua.
8 Your wickedness affects only your fel ows, your uprightness, other human beings.
9 Propter multitudinem calumniatorum clamabunt,
et ejulabunt propter vim brachii tyrannorum.
9 They too groan under the weight of oppression, they cry for help under the tyranny of the mighty,
10 Et non dixit : Ubi est Deus qui fecit me,
qui dedit carmina in nocte ;
10 but none of them thinks of saying, 'Where is God, my Maker, who makes glad songs ring out at night,
11 qui docet nos super jumenta terræ,
et super volucres cæli erudit nos ?
11 who has made us more intel igent than wild animals wiser than birds in the sky?'
12 Ibi clamabunt, et non exaudiet,
propter superbiam malorum.
12 Cry they may, but get no answer, to be spared from the arrogance of the wicked.
13 Non ergo frustra audiet Deus,
et Omnipotens causas singulorum intuebitur.
13 Of course God does not listen to trivialities, Shaddai pays no attention to them.
14 Etiam cum dixeris : Non considerat :
judicare coram illo, et expecta eum.
14 And how much less when you say, 'I cannot see him, my case is open and I am waiting for him.'
15 Nunc enim non infert furorem suum,
nec ulciscitur scelus valde.
15 Or, 'His anger never punishes, he does not seem aware of human rebel ion.'
16 Ergo Job frustra aperit os suum,
et absque scientia verba multiplicat.
16 Hence, when Job speaks, he talks nonsense, ignorantly babbling on and on.
