NOVA VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
Loquentibus autem illis ad populum, supervenerunt eis sa cerdotes etmagistratus templi et sadducaei,1 While they were stil talking to the people the priests came up to them, accompanied by the captain ofthe Temple and the Sadducees.
dolentes quod docerent populum etannuntiarent in Iesu resurrectionem ex mortuis;2 They were extremely annoyed at their teaching the people the resurrection from the dead by proclaimingthe resurrection of Jesus.
et iniecerunt in eos manus etposuerunt in custodiam in crastinum; erat enim iam vespera.3 They arrested them, and, as it was already late, they kept them in prison till the next day.
But many of those who had listened to their message became believers; the total number of men hadnow risen to something like five thousand.
Factum est autem in crastinum, ut congregarentur principes eorum et senioreset scribae in Ierusalem,5 It happened that the next day the rulers, elders and scribes held a meeting in Jerusalem
et Annas princeps sacerdotum et Caiphas et Ioannes etAlexander et quotquot erant de genere sacerdotali,6 with Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, Jonathan, Alexander and al the members of the high-priestlyfamilies.
”.7 They made the prisoners stand in the middle and began to interrogate them, 'By what power, and bywhose name have you men done this?'
Tunc Petrus repletus Spiritu Sancto dixit ad eos: “ Principes populi etseniores,8 Then Peter, fil ed with the Holy Spirit, addressed them, 'Rulers of the people, and elders!
si nos hodie diiudicamur in benefacto hominis infirmi, in quo istesalvus factus est,9 If you are questioning us today about an act of kindness to a cripple and asking us how he was healed,
notum sit omnibus vobis et omni plebi Israel quia innomine Iesu Christi Nazareni, quem vos crucifixistis, quem Deus suscitavit amortuis, in hoc iste astat coram vobis sanus.10 you must know, all of you, and the whole people of Israel, that it is by the name of Jesus Christ theNazarene, whom you crucified, and God raised from the dead, by this name and by no other that this manstands before you cured.
Hic est
lapis, qui reprobatus est a vobis aedificatoribus,
qui factus est in caput anguli.
This is the stone which you, the builders, rejected but which has become the cornerstone. Only in himis there salvation;
for of al the names in the world given to men, this is the only one by which we can be saved.'
Videntes autem Petri fiduciam et Ioannis, et comperto quod homines essentsine litteris et idiotae, admirabantur et cognoscebant eos quoniam cum Iesufuerant;13 They were astonished at the fearlessness shown by Peter and John, considering that they wereuneducated laymen; and they recognised them as associates of Jesus;
hominem quoque videntes stantem cum eis, qui curatus fuerat, nihilpoterant contradicere.14 but when they saw the man who had been cured standing by their side, they could find no answer.
Iubentes autem eos foras extra concilium secedere,conferebant ad invicem15 So they ordered them to stand outside while the Sanhedrin had a private discussion.
dicentes: “ Quid faciemus hominibus istis? Quoniamquidem notum signum factum est per eos omnibus habitantibus in Ierusalemmanifestum, et non possumus negare;16 'What are we going to do with these men?' they asked. 'It is obvious to everybody in Jerusalem that anotable miracle has been worked through them, and we cannot deny it.
sed ne amplius divulgetur in populum,comminemur eis, ne ultra loquantur in nomine hoc ulli hominum ”.17 But to stop the whole thing spreading any further among the people, let us threaten them against everspeaking to anyone in this name again.'
Etvocantes eos denuntiaverunt, ne omnino loquerentur neque docerent in nomineIesu.18 So they cal ed them in and gave them a warning on no account to make statements or to teach in thename of Jesus.
Petrus vero et Ioannes respondentes dixerunt ad eos: “ Si iustum estin conspectu Dei vos potius audire quam Deum, iudicate;19 But Peter and John retorted, 'You must judge whether in God's eyes it is right to listen to you and not toGod.
We cannot stop proclaiming what we have seen and heard.'
At illi ultra comminantesdimiserunt eos, nequaquam invenientes, quomodo punirent eos, propter populum,quia omnes glorificabant Deum in eo, quod acciderat;21 The court repeated the threats and then released them; they could not think of any way to punish them,since al the people were giving glory to God for what had happened.
annorum enim eratamplius quadraginta homo, in quo factum erat signum istud sanitatis.
The man who had been miraculously cured was over forty years old.
Dimissi autem venerunt ad suos et annuntiaverunt quanta ad eos principessacerdotum et seniores dixissent.23 As soon as they were released they went to the community and told them everything the chief priestsand elders had said to them.
Qui cum audissent, unanimiter levaveruntvocem ad Deum et dixerunt: “ Domine, tu, qui fecisti caelum et terram et mareet omnia, quae in eis sunt,24 When they heard it they lifted up their voice to God with one heart. 'Master,' they prayed, 'it is you who made sky and earth and sea, and everything in them;
“Quare fremuerunt gentes,
et populi meditati sunt inania?
it is you who said through the Holy Spirit and speaking through our ancestor David, your servant: Whythis uproar among the nations, this impotent muttering of the peoples?
Astiterunt reges terrae,
et principes convenerunt in unum
adversus Dominum et adversus Christum eius”.
Kings on earth take up position, princes plot together against the Lord and his Anointed.
Convenerunt enim vere in civitate ista adversus sanctum puerum tuum Iesum,quem unxisti, Herodes et Pontius Pilatus cum gentibus et populis Israel27 'This is what has come true: in this very city Herod and Pontius Pilate plotted together with the gentilenations and the peoples of Israel, against your holy servant Jesus whom you anointed,
facere, quaecumque manus tua et consilium praedestinavit fieri.28 to bring about the very thing that you in your strength and your wisdom had predetermined shouldhappen.
Et nunc,Domine, respice in minas eorum et da servis tuis cum omni fiducia loqui verbumtuum,29 And now, Lord, take note of their threats and help your servants to proclaim your message with alfearlessness,
by stretching out your hand to heal and to work miracles and marvels through the name of your holyservant Jesus.'
As they prayed, the house where they were assembled rocked. From this time they were all fil ed withthe Holy Spirit and began to proclaim the word of God fearlessly.
The whole group of believers was united, heart and soul; no one claimed private ownership of anypossessions, as everything they owned was held in common.
Etvirtute magna reddebant apostoli testimonium resurrectionis Domini Iesu, etgratia magna erat super omnibus illis.33 The apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus with great power, and they wereal accorded great respect.
Neque enim quisquam egens erat interillos; quotquot enim possessores agrorum aut domorum erant, vendentes afferebantpretia eorum, quae vendebant,34 None of their members was ever in want, as al those who owned land or houses would sel them, andbring the money from the sale of them,
et ponebant ante pedes apostolorum; dividebaturautem singulis, prout cuique opus erat.35 to present it to the apostles; it was then distributed to any who might be in need.
There was a Levite of Cypriot origin called Joseph whom the apostles surnamed Barnabas (whichmeans 'son of encouragement').
He owned a piece of land and he sold it and brought the money and presented it to the apostles.
