1 Locutusque est Dominus ad Moysen dicens:	1 Yahweh spoke to Moses and said,
2 “ Ulciscere filios Israel de Madianitis et sic colligeris ad populum tuum ”.	2 'Exact the ful vengeance for the Israelites on the Midianites. Afterwards you will be gathered to yourpeople.'
3 Statimque Moyses: “ Armate, inquit, ex vobis viros ad pugnam, qui possint ultionem Domini expetere de Madianitis.	3 Moses said to the people, 'Some of you are to take up arms for Yahweh's campaign against Midian,to carry out the vengeance of Yahweh on Midian.
4 Mille viri de singulis tribubus eligantur ex Israel, qui mittantur ad bellum ”.	4 You will put a thousand men in the field from each of the tribes of Israel.'
5 Dederuntque millenos de singulis tribubus, id est duodecim milia expeditorum ad pugnam,	5 In this way Israel's thousands provided twelve thousand men equipped for war, one thousand fromeach tribe:
6 quos misit Moyses cum Phinees filio Eleazari sacerdotis. Vasa quoque sancta et tubas ad clangendum tradidit ei.	6 Moses put them in the field, one thousand from each tribe, with Phinehas, son of the priest Eleazar,to go with them carrying the sacred objects and the trumpets for the battle cry.
7 Cumque pugnassent contra Madianitas, sicut praeceperat Dominus Moysi, omnes mares occiderunt	7 They made war on Midian, as Yahweh had ordered Moses, and put every male to death.
8 et reges eorum Evi et Recem et Sur et Hur et Rebe, quinque principes gentis, Balaam quoque filium Beor interfecerunt gladio;	8 What is more, they kil ed the kings of Midian, Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur and Reba, the five Midianite kings;they also put Balaam son of Beor to the sword.
9 ceperuntque mulieres eorum et parvulos. Omniaque pecora et cunctam supellectilem, quidquid habere potuerant, depopulati sunt:	9 The Israelites took the Midianite women and their little ones captive and carried off al their cattle, altheir flocks and al their goods as booty.
10 tam urbes quam viculos et castra flamma consumpsit;	10 They set fire to the towns where they lived and to al their encampments.
11 et tulerunt praedam et universa, quae ceperant, tam ex hominibus quam ex iumentis,	11 Then, taking al their booty, everything they had captured, human and animal,
12 et adduxerunt captivos, spolia et praedam ad Moysen et Eleazarum sacerdotem et ad omnem congregationem filiorum Israel ad castra in campestribus Moab iuxta Iordanem contra Iericho.	12 they brought the captives, spoil and booty to Moses, the priest Eleazar and the whole community ofIsraelites at the camp on the Plains of Moab, near the Jordan by Jericho.
13 Egressi sunt autem Moyses et Eleazar sacerdos et omnes principes synagogae in occursum eorum extra castra.	13 Moses, the priest Eleazar and al the leaders of the community went out of the camp to meet them.
14 Iratusque Moyses principibus exercitus, tribunis et centurionibus, qui venerant de bello,	14 Moses was enraged with the officers of the army, the commanders of the thousands andcommanders of the hundreds, who had come back from this military expedition.
15 ait: “ Cur omnes feminas reservastis?	15 He said, 'Why have you spared the life of al the women?
16 Nonne istae sunt, quae deceperunt filios Israel ad suggestionem Balaam et praevaricari vos fecerunt in Dominum super peccato Phegor, unde et percussus est populus Domini?	16 They were the very ones who, on Balaam's advice, caused the Israelites to be unfaithful to Yahwehin the affair at Peor: hence the plague which struck Yahweh's community.
17 Ergo cunctos interficite parvulos generis masculini et omnes mulieres, quae noverunt viros in coitu, iugulate;	17 So kil al the male children and kil al the women who have ever slept with a man;
18 puellas autem et omnes feminas virgines reservate vobis.	18 but spare the lives of the young girls who have never slept with a man, and keep them foryourselves.
19 Et vos manete extra castra septem diebus; qui occiderit hominem vel occisum tetigerit, lustrabitur die tertio et septimo, vos et captivi vestri.	19 As for you, bivouac outside the camp for seven days, everyone who has kil ed anyone or touched acorpse. Purify yourselves and your prisoners on the third and seventh days,
20 Et de omni praeda, sive vestimentum fuerit sive aliquid in utensilia praeparatum de caprarum pellibus et pilis et ligno, lustrabitis ”.	20 and purify al clothing, everything made of skin, everything woven of goat's hair and everythingmade of wood.'
21 Eleazar quoque sacerdos ad viros exercitus, qui pugnaverant, sic locutus est: “ Hoc est praeceptum legis, quod mandavit Dominus Moysi:	21 The priest Eleazar said to the soldiers who had come back from the campaign, 'This is an article ofthe Law which Yahweh prescribed to Moses:
22 Aurum et argentum et aes et ferrum et stannum et plumbum,	22 although gold, silver, bronze, iron, tin and lead,
23 omne, quod potest transire per flammas, igne purgabitur; quidquid autem ignem non potest sustinere, aqua expiationis sanctificabitur.	23 everything that can withstand fire can be cleaned by being passed through fire, it must stil bepurified with water for purification. Whatever cannot resist fire you must pass through water.
24 Et lavabitis vestimenta vestra die septimo, et purificati postea castra intrabitis ”.	24 'Wash your clothes on the seventh day and you wil then be clean. You may then re-enter the camp.'
25 Dixit quoque Dominus ad Moysen:	25 Yahweh spoke to Moses and said:
26 “ Tollite summam eorum, quae capta sunt, ab homine usque ad pecus, tu et Eleazar sacerdos et principes familiarum;	26 'With the priest Eleazar and the heads of families in the community, take a count of the spoils andcaptives, human and animal.
27 dividesque ex aequo praedam inter eos, qui pugnaverunt egressique sunt ad bellum, et inter omnem congregationem.	27 You wil then share out the spoil, half and half, between those who fought the campaign and the restof the community.
28 Et separabis partem Domino ab his, qui pugnaverunt et fuerunt in bello, unam animam de quingentis tam ex hominibus quam ex bobus et asinis et ovibus	28 From the share of the combatants who took part in the campaign, you wil set aside one out of everyfive hundred persons, oxen, donkeys and sheep as Yahweh's portion.
29 et dabis eam Eleazaro sacerdoti, quia praelibatio Domini sunt.	29 You wil take this from the half share coming to them and give it to the priest Eleazar as the portionset aside for Yahweh.
30 Ex media quoque parte filiorum Israel accipies quinquagesimum caput hominum et boum et asinorum et ovium cunctorum animantium et dabis ea Levitis, qui excubant in custodiis habitaculi Domini ”.	30 From the half coming to the Israelites, you will take one out of every fifty persons, oxen, donkeys,sheep, and al other animals, and give them to the Levites who are responsible for Yahweh's Dwel ing.'
31 Feceruntque Moyses et Eleazar sacerdos, sicut praeceperat Dominus.	31 Moses and the priest Eleazar did as Yahweh had ordered Moses.
32 Fuit autem praeda, quae supererat, quam exercitus ceperat, ovium sescenta septuaginta quinque milia,	32 The spoils, the remainder of the booty captured by the soldiers, came to six hundred and seventy-five thousand sheep and goats,
33 boum septuaginta duo milia,	33 seventy-two thousand head of cattle,
34 asinorum sexaginta milia et mille,	34 sixty-one thousand donkeys,
35 animae hominum sexus feminei, quae non cognoverant viros, triginta duo milia.	35 and in persons, women who had never slept with a man, thirty-two thousand in al .
36 Dataque est media pars his, qui in proelio fuerant, ovium trecenta triginta septem milia quingentae,	36 Half was assigned to those who had taken part in the war, namely three hundred and thirty-seventhousand five hundred sheep and goats,
37 e quibus in partem Domini supputatae sunt oves sescentae septuaginta quinque,	37 of which Yahweh's portion was six hundred and seventy-five,
38 et de bobus triginta sex milibus, boves septuaginta et duo,	38 thirty-six thousand head of cattle, of which Yahweh's portion was seventy-two,
39 de asinis triginta milibus quingentis, asini sexaginta unus,	39 thirty thousand five hundred donkeys, of which Yahweh's portion was sixty-one,
40 de animabus hominum sedecim milibus, cesserunt in partem Domini triginta duae animae.	40 and sixteen thousand persons, of which Yahweh's portion was thirty-two.
41 Tradiditque Moyses tributum praelibationis Domini Eleazaro sacerdoti, sicut fuerat ei imperatum.	41 Moses gave the priest Eleazar the portion set aside for Yahweh, as Yahweh had ordered Moses.
42 Ex media vero parte filiorum Israel, quam separaverat a parte eorum, qui in proelio fuerant,	42 As for the half coming to the Israelites which Moses had separated from that of the combatants,
43 de hac media parte, quae contigerat congregationi, id est de ovibus trecentis triginta septem milibus quingentis	43 this half, the community's share, came to three hundred and thirty-seven thousand five hundredsheep and goats,
44 et de bobus triginta sex milibus	44 thirty-six thousand head of cattle,
45 et de asinis triginta milibus quingentis	45 thirty thousand five hundred donkeys
46 et de hominibus sedecim milibus,	46 and sixteen thousand persons.
47 tulit Moyses quinquagesimum caput et dedit Levitis, qui excubabant in habitaculo Domini, sicut praeceperat Dominus.	47 From this half, the Israelites' share, Moses took one out of every fifty, human and animal, and gavethem to the Levites who were responsible for Yahweh's Dwel ing, as Yahweh had ordered Moses.
48 Cumque accessissent principes exercitus ad Moysen, tribuni centurionesque, dixerunt:	48 The officers of the thousands who had fought the campaign, the commanders of the thousands andcommanders of the hundreds, came to Moses
49 “ Nos servi tui recensuimus numerum pugnatorum, quos habuimus sub manu nostra, et ne unus quidem defuit.	49 and said, 'Your servants have numbered the soldiers under their command: none of our men ismissing.
50 Ob hanc causam offerimus in donariis Domini singuli, quod auri potuimus invenire, periscelidas et armillas, anulos et inaures ac muraenulas, ad placandum pro nobis Dominum ”.	50 So, as an offering for Yahweh, we have brought what each of us has found in the way of goldornaments, armlets and bracelets, rings, earrings and breastplates, to make expiation for ourselves beforeYahweh.'
51 Susceperuntque Moyses et Eleazar sacerdos aurum in diversis speciebus;	51 Moses and the priest Eleazar accepted this gold from them, al this jewel ery.
52 omne aurum, quod elevaverunt Domino, pondo sedecim milia septingentos quinquaginta siclos, a tribunis et centurionibus.	52 This portion of gold given to Yahweh by the commanders of the thousands and commanders of thehundreds amounted to sixteen thousand seven hundred and fifty shekels.
53 Unusquisque enim, quod in praeda rapuerat, suum erat.	53 Each of the soldiers took his own booty.
54 Et susceptum intulerunt in tabernaculum conventus in monumentum filiorum Israel coram Domino.	54 But Moses and the priest Eleazar, having accepted the gold from the commanders of the thousandsand commanders of the hundreds, brought it into the Tent of Meeting, to be a reminder of the Israelites beforeYahweh.
