NOVA VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
'From among the Israelites, summon your brother Aaron and his sons to be priests in my service:Aaron and Aaron's sons Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.
Faciesque vestes sanctas Aaron fratri tuo in gloriam et decorem;2 For your brother Aaron you wil make sacred vestments to give dignity and magnificence.
et loqueris cunctis sapientibus corde, quos replevi spiritu prudentiae, ut faciant vestes Aaron, in quibus sanctificatus ministret mihi.3 You will instruct al the skilled men, whom I have endowed with skil , to make Aaron's vestments for hisconsecration to my priesthood.
Facient vestimenta sancta Aaron fratri tuo et filiis eius, ut sacerdotio fungantur mihi;4 These are the vestments which they must make: a pectoral, an ephod, a robe, an embroidered tunic, aturban and a belt. They must make sacred vestments for your brother Aaron and his sons, for them to be priestsin my service.
accipientque aurum et hyacinthum et purpuram coccumque et byssum.
They wil use gold and violet material, red-purple and crimson, and finely woven linen.
Facient autem ephod de auro et hyacintho ac purpura coccoque bysso retorta opere polymito.6 'They wil make the ephod of finely woven linen embroidered with gold, violet-purple, red-purple andcrimson.
Duas fascias umerales habebit et in utroque latere summitatum suarum copulabitur cum eis.7 It wil have two shoulder-straps joined to it; it will be joined to them by its two edges.
Et balteus super ephod ad constringendum, eiusdem operis et unum cum eo, erit ex auro et hyacintho et purpura coccoque et bysso retorta.8 The waistband on the ephod to hold it in position must be of the same workmanship and be of a piecewith it: of gold, violet-purple, red-purple and crimson materials and finely woven linen.
Sumesque duos lapides onychinos et sculpes in eis nomina filiorum Israel:9 You will then take two cornelians and engrave them with the names of the sons of Israel,
sex nomina in lapide uno et sex reliqua in altero, iuxta ordinem nativitatis eorum.10 six of their names on one stone, the remaining six names on the other, in the order of their birth.
Opere sculptoris et caelatura gemmarii sculpes eos nominibus filiorum Israel, inclusos textura aurea;11 By the stone-carver's art -- seal engraving -- you wil engrave the two stones with the names of thesons of Israel. You will have them mounted in gold settings
et pones duos lapides super fascias umerales ephod, lapides memorialis filiorum Israel. Portabitque Aaron nomina eorum coram Domino super utrumque umerum ob recordationem.12 and wil put the two stones on the shoulder-straps of the ephod, to commemorate the sons of Israel.In this way Aaron will bear their names on his two shoulders, before Yahweh, as a reminder.
Facies ergo margines textas ex auro13 You wil also make golden rosettes,
and two chains of pure gold twisted like cord, and wil attach the cord-like chains to the rosettes.
Pectorale quoque iudicii facies opere polymito, iuxta texturam ephod, ex auro, hyacintho et purpura coccoque et bysso retorta.15 'You wil make the breastplate of judgement of the same embroidered work as the ephod; you wilmake it of gold, violet-purple, red-purple and crimson materials and finely woven linen.
Quadrangulum erit et duplex; mensuram palmi habebit tam in longitudine quam in latitudine.16 It must be square and doubled over, a span in length and a span in width.
Ponesque in eo quattuor ordines lapidum: in primo versu erit lapis sardius et topazius et smaragdus;17 In it you wil set four rows of stones: a sard, topaz and emerald for the first row;
in secundo carbunculus, sapphirus et iaspis;18 for the second row, a garnet, sapphire and diamond;
in tertio hyacinthus, achates et amethystus;19 for the third row, a hyacinth, a ruby and an amethyst;
in quarto chrysolithus, onychinus et beryllus. Inclusi auro erunt per ordines suos.20 and for the fourth row, a beryl, a cornelian and a jasper. These must be mounted in gold settings.
Habebuntque nomina filiorum Israel: duodecim nominibus caelabuntur, singuli lapides nominibus singulorum per duodecim tribus.21 The stones wil correspond to the names of the sons of Israel, twelve like their names, engraved likeseals, each with the name of one of the twelve tribes.
Facies in pectorali catenas quasi funiculos, opus tortile, ex auro purissimo;22 For the breastplate you wil make chains of pure gold twisted like cords,
et duos anulos aureos, quos pones in utraque pectoralis summitate;23 and on the breastplate you wil make two gold rings, putting the two rings on the two outside edges ofthe breastplate
catenasque aureas iunges anulis, qui sunt in marginalibus eius;24 and fastening the two gold cords to the two rings on the outside edges of the breastplate.
et ipsarum catenarum extrema duobus copulabis marginibus in fasciis umeralibus ephod in parte eius anteriore.25 The other two ends of the cords you wil fasten to the two rosettes, putting these on the shoulder-straps of the ephod, on the front.
Facies et duos anulos aureos, quos pones in summitatibus pectoralis in ora interiore, quae respicit ephod.26 You wil also make two gold rings and put them on the two edges of the breastplate, on the innerside, against the ephod;
Necnon et alios duos anulos aureos, qui ponendi sunt in utraque fascia umerali ephod deorsum, versus partem anteriorem eius iuxta iuncturam eius supra balteum ephod,27 and you wil make two gold rings and put them low down on the front of the two shoulder-pieces ofthe ephod, close to the join, above the waistband of the ephod.
et stringatur pectorale anulis suis cum anulis ephod vitta hyacinthina, ut maneat supra balteum ephod, et a se invicem pectorale et ephod nequeant separari.28 The breastplate wil be secured by a violet-purple cord passed through its rings and those of theephod, so that the breastplate wil sit above the waistband and not come apart from the ephod.
Portabitque Aaron nomina filiorum Israel in pectorali iudicii super cor suum, quando ingredietur sanctuarium: memoriale coram Domino in aeternum.29 Thus Aaron wil bear the names of the sons of Israel on the breastplate of judgement, on his heart,when he enters the sanctuary, as a reminder, before Yahweh, always.
Pones autem in pectorali iudicii Urim et Tummim, quae erunt super cor Aaron, quando ingredietur coram Domino; et gestabit iudicium filiorum Israel super cor suum in conspectu Domini semper.
To the breastplate of judgement you will add the urim and the thummim, and these wil be on Aaron'sheart when he goes into Yahweh's presence, and Aaron will bear the Israelites' judgement on his heart, inYahweh's presence, always.
Facies et pallium ephod totum hyacinthinum,31 'You wil make the robe of the ephod entirely of violet-purple.
in cuius medio supra erit capitium et ora per gyrum eius textilis, sicut in capitio loricae, ne rumpatur.32 In the centre it will have an opening for the head, the opening to have round it a border woven likethe neck of a coat of mail, so that it wil not get torn.
On its lower hem, you wil make pomegranates of violet-purple, red-purple and crimson, and finelywoven linen al round the hem, with golden bel s between them al round:
ita ut sit tintinnabulum aureum inter singula mala punica.34 a golden bell and then a pomegranate, alternately, al round the lower hem of the robe.
Aaron must wear it when he officiates, and the tinkling will be heard when he goes into the sanctuaryinto Yahweh's presence, or leaves it, and so he wil not incur death.
Facies et laminam de auro purissimo, in qua sculpes opere caelatoris: "Sanctum Domino".36 'You wil make a flower of pure gold and on it, as you would engrave a seal, you wil engrave,"Consecrated to Yahweh".
Ligabisque eam vitta hyacinthina, et erit super tiaram37 You wil put it on a violet-purple cord; it wil go on the turban; the front of the turban is the place whereit must go.
super frontem Aaron.
This wil go on Aaron's brow, and Aaron will thus take on himself the short-comings in the holy thingsconsecrated by the Israelites, in all their holy offerings. It wil be on his brow permanently, to make themacceptable to Yahweh.
Texesque tunicam bysso et tiaram byssinam facies et balteum opere plumarii.
The tunic you wil weave of fine linen, and make a turban of fine linen, and an embroideredwaistband.
Porro filiis Aaron tunicas lineas parabis et balteos ac mitras in gloriam et decorem;40 'For the sons of Aaron you will make tunics and waistbands. You wil also make them head-dressesto give dignity and magnificence.
Et unges eos et implebis manus eorum sanctificabisque illos, ut sacerdotio fungantur mihi.41 You wil dress your brother Aaron and his sons in these; you wil then anoint them, invest them andconsecrate them to serve me in the priesthood.
Facies eis et feminalia linea, ut operiant carnem turpitudinis suae a renibus usque ad femora;42 You wil also make them linen breeches reaching from waist to thigh, to cover their bare flesh.
Aaron and his sons wil wear these when they go into the Tent of Meeting and when they approachthe altar to serve in the sanctuary, as a precaution against incurring mortal guilt. This is a perpetual decree forAaron and for his descendants after him.'
