1 Locutus est Deus ad Iacob: “ Surge et ascende Bethel et habita ibi; facque altare Deo, qui apparuit tibi, quando fugiebas Esau fratrem tuum ”. | 1 God said to Jacob, 'Move on, go to Bethel and settle there. Make an altar there for the God whoappeared to you when you were fleeing from your brother Esau.' |
2 Iacob vero, convocata omni domo sua, ait: “ Abigite deos alienos, qui in medio vestri sunt, et mundamini ac mutate vestimenta vestra. | 2 Jacob said to his family and to all who were with him, 'Get rid of the foreign gods you have with you;cleanse yourselves, and change your clothes. |
3 Surgamus et ascendamus in Bethel, ut faciamus ibi altare Deo, qui exaudivit me in die tribulationis meae et socius fuit itineris mei ”. | 3 We must move on and go to Bethel. There I shall make an altar for the God who heard me when I wasin distress, and gave me his help on the journey I made.' |
4 Dederunt ergo ei omnes deos alienos, quos habebant, et inaures, quae erant in auribus eorum; at ille infodit ea subter Quercum, quae est prope urbem Sichem. | 4 They gave Jacob al the foreign gods in their possession, and the earrings that they were wearing.Jacob buried them under the oak tree near Shechem. |
5 Cumque profecti essent, terror Dei invasit omnes per circuitum civitates, et non sunt ausi persequi filios Iacob. | 5 They broke camp; a divine terror struck the towns round about, and no one pursued the sons ofJacob. |
6 Venit igitur Iacob Luzam, quae est in terra Chanaan, id est Bethel, ipse et omnis populus cum eo. | 6 When Jacob arrived at Luz in Canaan -- that is, Bethel-and al the people with him, |
7 Aedificavitque ibi altare et appellavit nomen loci illius Deus Bethel; ibi enim apparuit ei Deus, cum fugeret fratrem suum. | 7 he built an altar there and named the place El-Bethel, since it was there that God had appeared to himwhen he was fleeing from his brother. |
8 Eodem tempore mortua est Debora nutrix Rebeccae et sepulta est ad radices Bethel subter quercum; vocatumque est nomen loci illius Quercus fletus. | 8 Deborah, who had been Rebekah's nurse, died and was buried below Bethel, under the oak tree; sothey named it the Oak of Tears. |
9 Apparuit iterum Deus Iacob, postquam reversus est de Paddanaram, benedixitque ei | 9 God again appeared to Jacob on his return from Paddan-Aram, and blessed him. |
10 dicens: “ Non vocaberis ultra Iacob, sed Israel erit nomen tuum ”, et appellavit eum Israel. | 10 God said to him, 'Your name is Jacob, but from now on you wil be cal ed not Jacob but Israel.' Thushe came by the name Israel. |
11 Dixitque ei: “ Ego Deus omnipotens. Cresce et multiplicare; gens et congregatio nationum erunt ex te, reges de lumbis tuis egredientur. | 11 God said to him, 'I am El Shaddai. Be fruitful and multiply. A nation, indeed an assembly of nations,wil descend from you, and kings will issue from your loins. |
12 Terramque, quam dedi Abraham et Isaac, dabo tibi; et semini tuo post te dabo terram hanc ”. | 12 The country which I gave to Abraham and Isaac, I now give to you; and this country I shal give toyour descendants after you.' |
13 Et ascendit ab eo Deus. | 13 Then God went up from him. |
14 Ille vero erexit titulum lapideum in loco, quo locutus ei fuerat Deus, libans super eum libamina et effundens oleum | 14 Jacob raised a monument at the spot where he had spoken to him, a standing-stone, on which hemade a libation and poured oil. |
15 vocansque nomen loci illius Bethel. | 15 Jacob named the place Bethel where God had spoken to him. |
16 Egressi sunt de Bethel. Et adhuc spatium quoddam erat usque ad Ephratham, cum parturiret Rachel; | 16 They left Bethel, and while they were stil some distance from Ephrath, Rachel went into labour, andher pains were severe. |
17 ob difficultatem partus periclitari coepit, dixitque ei obstetrix: “ Noli timere, quia et hac vice habes filium ”. | 17 When her labour was at its hardest, the midwife said to her, 'Do not worry, this is going to be anotherboy.' |
18 Egrediente autem anima et imminente iam morte, vocavit nomen filii sui Benoni (id est Filius doloris mei); pater vero appellavit eum Beniamin (id est Filius dextrae). | 18 At the moment when she breathed her last, for she was dying, she named him Ben-Oni. His father,however, named him Benjamin. |
19 Mortua est ergo Rachel et sepulta est in via, quae ducit Ephratham; haec est Bethlehem. | 19 So Rachel died and was buried on the road to Ephrath, now Bethlehem. |
20 Erexitque Iacob titulum super sepulcrum eius; hic est titulus monumenti Rachel usque in praesentem diem. | 20 Jacob raised a monument on her grave, that same monument of Rachel's Tomb which is theretoday. |
21 Egressus inde Israel, fixit tabernaculum trans Magdaleder (id est Turris gregis). | 21 Israel left and pitched his tent beyond Migdal-Eder. |
22 Cumque habitaret in illa regione, abiit Ruben et dormivit cum Bilha concubina patris sui; quod illum minime latuit. Erant autem filii Iacob duodecim. | 22 While Israel was living in that district, Reuben went and slept with Bilhah his father's concubine, andIsrael found out. The sons of Jacob were now twelve. |
23 Filii Liae: primogenitus Ruben et Simeon et Levi et Iudas et Issachar et Zabulon. | 23 The sons of Leah: Jacob's eldest son Reuben, then Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar and Zebulun. |
24 Filii Rachel: Ioseph et Beniamin. | 24 The sons of Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin. |
25 Filii Bilhae ancillae Rachelis: Dan et Nephthali. | 25 The sons of Bilhah, Rachel's slave-girl: Dan and Naphtali. |
26 Filii Zelphae ancillae Liae: Gad et Aser. Hi sunt filii Iacob, qui nati sunt ei in Paddanaram. | 26 The sons of Zilpah, Leah's slave-girl: Gad and Asher. These were the sons born to Jacob in Paddan-Aram. |
27 Venit Iacob ad Isaac patrem suum in Mambre Cariatharbe, id est Hebron, ubi peregrinatus est Abraham et Isaac. | 27 Jacob came home to his father Isaac at Mamre, at Kiriath-Arba -- now Hebron -- where Abraham andIsaac had stayed. |
28 Et completi sunt dies Isaac centum octoginta annorum; | 28 Isaac was one hundred and eighty years old |
29 consumptusque aetate mortuus est et appositus est populo suo senex et plenus dierum. Et sepelierunt eum Esau et Iacob filii sui. | 29 when he breathed his last. He died and was gathered to his people, an old man who had enjoyed hisful span of life. His sons Esau and Jacob buried him. |
