Lettera agli Ebrei 12

BIBBIA MARTINI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Per la qual cosa noi pure avendo d'ogni parte sì gran nugolo di testimoni, sgravatici d'ogni incarco, e del peccato, che ci sta d'intorno, corriamo per la pazienza nella carriera, che ci è proposta:	1 With so many witnesses in a great cloud all around us, we too, then, should throw off everything thatweighs us down and the sin that clings so closely, and with perseverance keep running in the race which liesahead of us.
2 Mirando all'autore, e consumatore della fede Gesù, il quale propostosi il gaudio sostenne la croce, non avendo fatto caso dell'ignominia, e siede alla destra del trono di Dio.	2 Let us keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, who leads us in our faith and brings it to perfection: for the sakeof the joy which lay ahead of him, he endured the cross, disregarding the shame of it, and has taken his seat atthe right of God's throne.
3 Imperocché ripensate attentamente a colui, che tale contro la sua propria persona sostenne contraddizione da' peccatori: affinchè non vi stanchiate, perdendovi d'animo.	3 Think of the way he persevered against such opposition from sinners and then you will not lose heartand come to grief.
4 Dappoiché non avete per anco resistito fino al sangue, pugnando contro il peccato:	4 In the fight against sin, you have not yet had to keep fighting to the point of bloodshed.
5 E vi siete scordati di quella esortazione, la quale a voi parla come a' figliuoli, dicendo: figliuol mio, non trascurare la disciplina del Signore: e non ti venga a noia, quando da lui s'è ripreso.	5 Have you forgotten that encouraging text in which you are addressed as sons? My son, do not scorncorrection from the Lord, do not resent his training,
6 Imperocché il Signore corregge quei che ama: e usa la sferza con ogni figliuolo, cui riconosce per suo.	6 for the Lord trains those he loves, and chastises every son he accepts.
7 Siate perseveranti sotto la disciplina. Dio si diporta con voi come con figliuoli: imperocché qual è il figliuolo, cui il padre non corregge?	7 Perseverance is part of your training; God is treating you as his sons. Has there ever been any sonwhose father did not train him?
8 Che se siete fuori della disciplina, alla quale tutti hanno parte: siete adunque bastardi, e non figliuoli.	8 If you were not getting this training, as all of you are, then you would be not sons but bastards.
9 Di più i padri nostri secondo la carne abbiamo avuti per precettori; e gli abbiam rispettati: e non saremo molto più ubbidienti al padre degli spiriti, per aver vita?	9 Besides, we have all had our human fathers who punished us, and we respected them for it; al themore readily ought we to submit to the Father of spirits, and so earn life.
10 Imperocché quelli per il tempo di pochi giorni ci facevano i pedagoghi, secondo che lor pareva: ma questi in quello, che giova a divenir partecipi della di lui santità.	10 Our human fathers were training us for a short life and according to their own lights; but he does it al for our own good, so that we may share his own holiness.
11 Or qualunque disciplina pel presente non sembra apportatrice di gaudio, ma di tristezza: dopo però, tranquillo frutto di giustizia rende a coloro, che in essa siano stati esercitati.	11 Of course, any discipline is at the time a matter for grief, not joy; but later, in those who haveundergone it, it bears fruit in peace and uprightness.
12 Per la qual cosa rinfrancate le languide mani, e le vacillanti ginocchia,	12 So steady al weary hands and trembling knees
13 E fate diritta carreggiata co' vostri piedi: affinchè alcuno zoppicando non esca di strada, ma piuttosto si ammendi.	13 and make your crooked paths straight; then the injured limb wil not be maimed, it wil get betterinstead.
14 Cercate la pace con tutti, e la santità, senza di cui nissuno vedrà Dio:	14 Seek peace with al people, and the holiness without which no one can ever see the Lord.
15 Ponendo mente, che nissuno manchi alla grazia di Dio: che nissuna amara radice spuntando fuora, non rechi danno, e per essa molti restino infetti.	15 Be careful that no one is deprived of the grace of God and that no root of bitterness should begin togrow and make trouble; this can poison a large number.
16 Che non (siavi) alcuno fornicatore, o profano, come Esaù, il quale per una pietanza vendè la sua primogenitura:	16 And be careful that there is no immoral person, or anyone worldly minded like Esau, who sold hisbirthright for one single meal.
17 Imperocché sapete, come ancor poi bramando di essere erede della benedizione, fu rigettato; conciossiaché non trovò luogo a penitenza, quantunque con lagrime la ricercasse.	17 As you know, when he wanted to obtain the blessing afterwards, he was rejected and, though hepleaded for it with tears, he could find no way of reversing the decision.
18 Imperocché non vi siete appressati al monte palpabile, e al fuoco ardente, e al turbine, e alla caligine, e alla bufera,	18 What you have come to is nothing known to the senses: not a blazing fire, or gloom or totaldarkness, or a storm;
19 E al suon della tromba, e al rimbombo delle parole, per cui que', che l'udirono, domandarono, che non fosse fatta lor più parola.	19 or trumpet-blast or the sound of a voice speaking which made everyone that heard it beg that nomore should be said to them.
20 Imperocché non reggevano a quella intimazione: se anche una bestia toccherà il monte, sarà lapidata.	20 They could not bear the order that was given: If even a beast touches the mountain, it must bestoned.
21 E tanto era terribile quel, che vedeasi, che Mosé disse: sono spaurito, e tremante.	21 The whole scene was so terrible that Moses said, 'I am afraid and trembling.'
22 Ma vi siete appressati al monte di Sion, e alla citta di Dio vivo, alla Gerusalemme celeste, e alla moltitudine di molte migliaja di Angeli,	22 But what you have come to is Mount Zion and the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalemwhere the mil ions of angels have gathered for the festival,
23 E alla Chiesa de' primogeniti, i quali sono registrati nel cielo, e a Dio giudice di tutti, e agli spiriti de' giusti perfetti,	23 with the whole Church of first-born sons, enrolled as citizens of heaven. You have come to Godhimself, the supreme Judge, and to the spirits of the upright who have been made perfect;
24 E al mediatore della nuova alleanza Gesù, e all'aspersione di quel sangue, che parla meglio, che Abele.	24 and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to purifying blood which pleads more insistentlythan Abel's.
25 Badate di non rifiutare colui, che parla. Imperocché se per aver rifiutato colui, che loro parlava sopra la trini, quelli non ebbero scampo: molto più noi, volgendo le spalle a lui, che ci parla dal cielo:	25 Make sure that you never refuse to listen when he speaks. If the people who on earth refused tolisten to a warning could not escape their punishment, how shal we possibly escape if we turn away from avoice that warns us from heaven?
26 La voce del quale scosse allora la terra: e adesso fa promessa, dicendo i ancora una volta; e io sommoverò non solo la terra, ma anche il cielo.	26 That time his voice made the earth shake, but now he has given us this promise: I am going to shakethe earth once more and not only the earth but heaven as wel .
27 Or dacché egli dice: ancor una volta: dichiara la traslazione delle cose instabili come fattizie, affinchè quelle rimangano, che sono immobili.	27 The words once more indicate the removal of what is shaken, since these are created things, so thatwhat is not shaken remains.
28 Per la qual cosa attenendoci al regno immobile, abbiamo la grazia, per la quale accetti a Dio lo serviamo con timore, e riverenza.	28 We have been given possession of an unshakeable kingdom. Let us therefore be grateful and useour gratitude to worship God in the way that pleases him, in reverence and fear.
29 Imperocché il nostro Dio è un fuoco divoratore.	29 For our God is a consuming fire.
