1 Leggesi negli scritti del profeta Geremia, com'egli ordinò a quelli, che erano condotti in altro paese, che prendessero il fuoco nella maniera, che si è detto, e diede avvertimenti a questi, che erano menati altrove.	1 'It is on record that the prophet Jeremiah ordered the deportees to take the fire, as we have described,
2 E diede loro la legge, affinchè non si scordassero de' comandamenti del Signore, e non cadessero in errore alla vista de' simolacri d'oro, e d'argento, e della loro pompa.	2 and how, having given them the Law, the prophet warned the deportees never to forget the Lord'sprecepts, nor to let their thoughts be tempted by the sight of gold and silver statues or the finery adorning them.
3 E con altre simili ammonizioni gli esortava a non rigettare dal cuor loro la legge.	3 Among other similar admonitions, he urged them not to let the Law depart from their hearts.
4 E nelle scritture stesse si conteneva come il profeta per avviso datogli da Dio, ordinò, che il tabernacolo, e l'arca andasser seco, fino che arrivò a quel monte, sul quale sali Mosè, e donde vide l'eredità di Dio:	4 'The same document also describes how the prophet, warned by an oracle, gave orders for the tentand the ark to go with him, when he set out for the mountain which Moses had climbed to survey God's heritage.
5 E giunto colà Geremia trovò una caverna, e vi ripose dentro il tabernacolo, e l'arca, e l'altare degli incensi, e ne accecò l'ingresso.	5 On his arrival, Jeremiah found a cave-dwel ing, into which he put the tent, the ark and the altar ofincense, afterwards blocking up the entrance.
6 E alcuni di quelli, che lo seguivano si avvicinarono per notare il luogo, ma non poteron poi rinvenirlo.	6 Some of his companions went back later to mark out the path but were unable to find it.
7 E quando Geremia seppe tal cosa gli sgridò, e disse: Il luogo sarà ignoto, fino a tanto che Dio riunisca tutto il popolo, e faccia misericordia.	7 When Jeremiah learned this, he reproached them, "The place is to remain unknown", he said, "untilGod gathers his people together again and shows them his mercy.
8 E allora il Signore manifesterà tali cose, e apparirà la Maestà del Signore, e verrà la nuvola, quale fa veduta da Mosè, e quale apparve allorché Salomone domandò che il tempio fosse consagrato al grande Iddio.	8 Then the Lord wil bring these things once more to light, and the glory of the Lord will be seen, and sowil the cloud, as it was revealed in the time of Moses and when Solomon prayed that the holy place might begloriously hal owed."
9 Perocché egli fece grandiosa mostra di sua sapienza, e come sapiente offerse il sagrifizio della dedicazione, e santificazione del tempio.	9 'It was also recorded how Solomon in his wisdom offered the sacrifice of the dedication and completionof the sanctuary.
10 Come Mosè fece orazione al Signore, e scese fuoco dal cielo, e consumò l'olocausto; così ancor Salomone fece orazione, e scese fuoco dal cielo, e consumò l'olocausto.	10 As Moses had prayed to the Lord and fire had come down from heaven and burned up the sacrifice,so Solomon also prayed, and the fire from above consumed the burnt offerings.
11 E Mosè disse: Non è stato mangiato quello, che fu offerto per lo peccato, ma è stato consunto dal fuoco.	11 Moses had said, "Because the sacrifice for sin had not been eaten, it was burnt instead."
12 Salomone parimente celebrò per otto giorni la dedicazione.	12 Solomon similarly observed the eight-day festival.
13 E queste stesse cose erano registrate negli scritti, e ne' commentarj di Nehemia, dove dicesi come egli formò la biblioteca, e radunò da tutte parti i libri e de' profeti, e di David, e le lettere dei re, e dei loro doni.	13 'In addition to the above, it was also recorded, both in these writings and in the Memoirs of Nehemiah, how Nehemiah founded a library and made a col ection of the books dealing with the kings and the prophets, thewritings of David and the letters of the kings on the subject of offerings.
14 Slmilmente anche Giuda rimesse insieme tutto quello, che si era smarrito nel tempo della guerra, che sostenemmo, e tutto questo si trova presso di noi.	14 Similarly, Judas made a complete col ection of the books dispersed in the late war, and these we stillhave.
15 Se voi pertanto desiderate queste cose, mandate persone, che a voi le portino.	15 If you need any of them, send someone to fetch them.
16 Essendo adunque noi per celebrare la festa della purificazione, ve ne abbiam dato avviso, e voi ben farete, se fa rete festa per que' giorni.	16 'Since we are about to celebrate the purification, we now write, requesting you to observe the samedays.
17 E Dio, il quale ha liberato il suo popolo, e ha renduto a tutti la loro eredità, e il regno, e il sacerdozio, e il luogo santo,	17 God, who has saved his whole people, conferring heritage, kingdom, priesthood and sanctification onal of us,
18 Conforme avea promesso nella legge, abbiamo speranza, che ben presto farà a noi misericordia, e ci riunirà da quanti luoghi sono sotto del cielo, nel luogo santo.	18 as he has promised in the Law, will surely, as our hope is in him, be swift to show us mercy andgather us together from everywhere under heaven to the holy place, since he has rescued us from great evilsand has purified it.'
19 Perocché da grandi pericolo egli ci ha liberati, ed ha purificato il luogo santo.	19 The story of Judas Maccabaeus and his brothers, the purification of the great Temple, the dedicationof the altar,
20 Quello poi che riguarda Giuda Maccabeo, e i suoi fratelli, e la purificazione del gran tempio, e la dedicazione dell'altare,	20 together with the wars against Antiochus Epiphanes and his son Eupator,
21 E le guerre avvenute sotto Antioco l'illustre, e sotto il suo figliuolo Eupatore,	21 and the celestial manifestations that came to hearten the brave champions of Judaism, so that, fewthough they were, they pil aged the whole country, routed the barbarian hordes,
22 E i segni veduti in cielo favorevoli a quelli, che valorosamente combatterono per la nazione Giudea, talmente che essendo in piccol numero liberarono il paese, e posero in rotta la moltitudine de' barbari,	22 recovered the sanctuary renowned the whole world over, liberated the city and re-established the lawsby then all but abolished, the Lord showing his favour by al his gracious help to them-
23 E ricuperarono il tempio più celebre, che sia al mondo, e la città messero in libertà, e alle leggi abolite rendettero l'osservanza, rendutosi propizio ad essi il Signore, che tutto rimesse in calma,	23 al this, already related in five books by Jason of Cyrene, we shall attempt to condense into a singlework.
24 Queste cose comprese in cinque libri da Giasone di Cirene, ahbiam noi tentato di restringere in un solo volume.	24 Considering the spate of figures and the difficulty encountered, because of the mass of material, bythose who wish to immerse themselves in historical records,
25 Perocché considerando noi la moltitudine de' libri, e la difficoltà, che nasce dalla moltiplicità delle cose per quelli, che bramano di internarsi nei racconti istorici,	25 we have aimed at providing diversion for those who merely want something to read, a saving of labourfor those who enjoy committing things to memory, and profit for each and al .
26 Abbiam proccurato, che quelli, che amano di leggere abbiano onde con tentar l'animo loro; gli studiosi poi possano più facilmente imprimer le cose nella memoria, e tutti i lettori se ricevano utilità.	26 For us who have undertaken the drudgery of this abridgement, it has been no easy task but a matterof sweat and midnight oil,
27 Ma quanto a noi, intraprendendo di formare un tal compendio, non leggera fatica abbiamo assunta, ma anzi un lavoro, che molta preparazione richiede, e sudore.	27 comparable to the exacting task of someone organising a banquet, whose aim is to satisfy a variety oftastes. Nevertheless, for the sake of rendering a general service, we remain glad to endure this drudgery,
28 Ma imitando coloro, che preparano un convito, e cercano di incontrare il gusto altrui per ingrazianirsi con molti, di buon animo prendiamo questa fatica.	28 leaving accuracy of detail to the historian, and concentrating our effort on tracing the outlines in thiscondensed version.
29 La verità di ciascuna cosa noi la rimettiamo agli autori; ma noi del dato disegno formeremo l'abbozzo.	29 Just as the architect of a new house is responsible for the construction as a whole, while the manundertaking the ceramic painting has to take into consideration only the decorative requirements, so, I think, it iswith us.
30 Imperocché siccome all'architetto, che fa una nuova casa, si appartiene l'aver cura di tutta la fabbrica, quegli poi, che si studia di darne il disegno deve cercare quello, che atto sia a darne l'idea: nella stessa guisa fa d'uopo giudicare di noi.	30 To make the subject his own, to explore its by-ways, to be meticulous about details, is the business ofthe original historian,
31 Imperocché all'autor di una storia sì conviene il raccogliere la materia, e ordinare il racconto, e l'internarsi minutamente in tutte le circostanze;	31 but the person making the adaptation must be al owed to aim at conciseness of expression and toforgo any exhaustive treatment of his subject.
32 Ma a chi fa un compendio si dee concedere, ch'egli si attenga alla brevità nel suo dire, e schivi le ampliazioni de' racconti.	32 So now let us begin our narrative, without adding any more to what has been said above; there wouldbe no sense in expanding the preface to the history and curtailing the history itself.
33 Qui adunque darem principio al racconto, contenti di questo solo esordio; perocché stolta cosa sarebbe il diffondersi avanti all'istoria, e nella storia stessa restringersi.
