Secondo libro dei Maccabei 15

1 Ma Nicanore avendo saputo, che Giuda era nel paese della Samaria, risolvè di assalirlo con tutte le forze in giorno di sabato.	1 Nicanor heard that Judas and his men were in the neighbourhood of Samaria, so he decided to attackthem, at no risk to himself, on the day of rest.
2 Ma dicendo a lui que' Giudei, i quali per necessità lo seguivano: Non volere far cosa si strana, e barbara, ma rendi onore al giorno santo, e rispetta colui, che tutto vede:	2 Those Jews who had been compel ed to follow him, said, 'Do not massacre them in such a savage,barbarous way. Respect the day on which the All-seeing has conferred a special holiness.'
3 Quell'infelice domandò se vi fosse in cielo un Dio potente, che avesse ordinato di osservare il giorno di sabato.	3 At this the triple-dyed scoundrel asked if there were in heaven a sovereign who had ordered thekeeping of the Sabbath day.
4 E avendo quelli risposto: Egli è lo stesso Dio vivo possente nel cielo, che ordinò di celebrare il settimo giorno,	4 When they answered, 'The living Lord himself, the Heavenly Sovereign, has ordered the observanceof the seventh day,'
5 Egli allora disse: Ed io sono possente sopra la terra, e comando, che si prendano le armi, e cbe si serva il re. Egli però non potè eseguire i suoi disegni.	5 he retorted, 'And I, as sovereign on earth, order you to take up arms and do the king's business.' Foral that, he did not manage to carry out his wicked plan.
6 Nicanore adunque trasportato dal la sua grandissima superbia avea in animo di ergere un trofeo comune de' Giudei.	6 While Nicanor, in his unlimited boastfulness and pride, was planning to erect a general trophy with thespoils taken from Judas and his men,
7 Maccabeo però avea ferma fede, e speranza, che Dio gli avrebbe mandato soccorso:	7 Maccabaeus remained firm in his confident conviction that the Lord would stand by him.
8 Ed esortava i suoi, che non temessero gli assalti delle nazioni, ma avessero in memoria come erano stati già aiutati dal cielo, e sperassero allora, che l'Onnipotente avrebbe data loro la vittoria.	8 He urged his men not to be dismayed by the foreigners' attacks but, keeping in mind the help that hadcome to them from Heaven in the past, to be confident that this time too victory would be theirs with the help ofthe Almighty.
9 E ripetendo loro le parole della legge, e de' profeti, e rammentando le imprese fatte da loro ne' tempi precedenti, li rendè più animosi:	9 He put fresh heart into them by citing the Law and the Prophets and, by stirring up memories of thebattles they had already won, he fil ed them with new enthusiasm.
10 E ravvivato il loro coraggio, metteva anche in vista la perfidia delle genti, e i giuramenti violati.	10 Having thus aroused their courage, he ended his exhortation by demonstrating the treachery of theforeigners and how they had violated their oaths.
11 E armò ciascheduno di essi, non con dar loro degli scudi, e delle lancie, ma con ottimi ragionamenti, ed esortazioni e col riferire una visione degna di fede, la quale li riempiè' di allegrezza.	11 Having armed each one of them not so much with the safety given by shield and lance as with thatconfidence which springs from noble language, he encouraged them al by describing to them a convincingdream -- a vision, as it were.
12 Or la visione fu tale: Egli vedeva Onia, che era stato sommo Sacerdote, uomo dabbene, e benigno, esercitato fin da fanciullo nelle virtù, colla sua verecondia nel volto, colla modestia nel suo portamento, colla sua grazia nel favellare, il quale stendendo le mani faceva orazione per tutto il popolo dei Giudei:	12 What he had seen was this: Onias, the former high priest, that paragon of men, modest of bearingand gentle of manners, suitably eloquent and trained from boyhood in the practice of every virtue -- Onias wasstretching out his hands and praying for the whole Jewish community.
13 E dipoi era comparso un altro uomo venerabile per l'età, e per la maestà, cinto di magnificenza da tutti i lati:	13 Next, there appeared a man equal y remarkable for his great age and dignity and invested with amarvel ous and impressive air of majesty.
14 E che Onia rispondendo a lui gli avea detto: Questi è l'amico de' fratelli, e del popolo di Israele; questi è colui che prega fortemente pel popolo, e per tutta la città santa, Geremia Profeta di Dio.	14 Onias began to speak: 'This is a man', he said, 'who loves his brothers and prays much for thepeople and the holy city-Jeremiah, the prophet of God.'
15 E che Geremia aveva stesa la mano destra, e aveva data a Giuda una Spalla d'oro, dicendo:	15 Jeremiah then stretched out his right hand and presented Judas with a golden sword, saying as hegave it,
16 Prendi questa spada santa, dono di Dio, per mezzo del quale tu getterai per terra i nemici del mio popolo di israeliti.	16 'Take this holy sword as a gift from God; with it you wil shatter the enemy.'
17 Ouegli adunque incoraggiti dalle parole di Giuda molto efficaci, le quali servivano ad avvivare il vigore, e confortare gli animi della gioventù, risolverono di valorosamente combattere, e menare le mani, affinchè giudice della causa fosse il valore, atteso che e la città santa, e il tempio erano in pericolo.	17 Encouraged by the noble words of Judas, which had the power to inspire valour and give the youngthe spirit of mature men, they decided not to entrench themselves in a camp, but bravely to take the offensiveand, in hand-to-hand fighting, to commit the result to the fortune of war, since the city, their holy religion and theTemple were in danger.
18 Perocché minore era la pena, che facean loro le mogli, e i figliuoli, e i fratelli, e i parenti; ma il massimo, e principal timore era per la santità del tempio:	18 Their concern for their wives and children, their brothers and relatives, had shrunk to minuteimportance; their chief and greatest fear was for the consecrated Temple.
19 Ma quelli, che erano nella città erano non poco inquieti della sorte di quelli, che erano per venire a battaglia.	19 Those left behind in the city felt a similar anxiety, alarmed as they were about the forthcomingencounter in the open country.
20 Ma quando tutti già aspettavano la decisione della contesa, e i nemici eran presenti, e l'esercito messo in ordine, e gli elefanti, e i cavalli ai luoghi loro,	20 Everyone now awaited the coming issue. The enemy had already concentrated their forces andstood formed up in order of battle, with the elephants drawn up in a strategic position and the cavalry disposedon the wings.
21 Maccabeo considerando quella moltitudine, che si avanzava, e la varia maniera delle armi, e la ferocità degli elefanti, stese le mani al cielo invocò quel Signore, che fa i prodigj, il quale non secondo la forza degli eserciti, ma conforme a lui piace, da la vittoria a chi ne è degno,	21 Maccabaeus took note of these masses confronting him, the glittering array of armour and the fierceaspect of the elephants; then, raising his hands to heaven, he called on the Lord who works miracles, in theknowledge that it is not by force of arms but as he sees fit to decide, that victory is granted by him to such asdeserve it.
22 E lo invocò con queste parole: Tu, Signore, se' quegli, che mandasti il tuo Angelo a tempo di Ezechia re di Giuda, e uccidesti nel compo di Sennacherib cento ottanta cinque mila uomini:	22 His prayer was worded thus: 'You, Master, sent your angel in the days of Hezekiah king of Judaea,and he destroyed no less than one hundred and eighty-five thousand of Sennacherib's army;
23 E adesso o Signore dei cieli, manda il tuo buon Angelo innanzi a noi, che dia a conoscere la forza del terribile, e tremendo tuo braccio,	23 now, once again, Sovereign of heaven, send a good angel before us to spread terror and dismay.
24 Affinchè restino sbigottiti quelli, i quali bestemmiando si muovono contro il tuo popolo santo. Cosi terminò egli la sua orazione.	24 May these men be struck down by the might of your arm, since they have come with blasphemy ontheir lips to attack your holy people.' And on these words he finished.
25 Ma Nicanore, e la sua gente si avvicinarono al suono delle trombe, e delle canzoni.	25 Nicanor and his men advanced to the sound of trumpets and war songs,
26 E Giuda co' suoi, invocato Dio coll'orazione, attaccarono la zuffa:	26 but the men of Judas closed with the enemy uttering invocations and prayers.
27 E combattendo colla mano, ma pregando Dio col cuore, uccisero niente meno di trenta cinque mila uomini, essendo stati grandiosamente confortati dalla presenza di Dio.	27 Fighting with their hands and praying to God in their hearts, they cut down at least thirty-fivethousand men and were greatly cheered by this manifestation of God.
28 E mentre pieni di allegrezza se ne tornavano indietro, finita già la battaglia, seppero come Nicanore giaceva colle sue armi prostrato per terra.	28 When the engagement was over and they were withdrawing in triumph, they recognised Nicanor,lying dead in ful armour.
29 Alzato perciò un grido, e levatosi un grande strepito, benedicevano nel natio linguaggio il Signore onnipotente.	29 With shouting and confusion all around, they blessed the sovereign Master in their ancestral tongue.
30 Ma Giuda sempre pronto di corpo, e di animo a morire pe' concittadini, ordinò, che si tagliasse il capo di Nicanore, e il braccio colla spalla, e si portassero a Gerusalemme.	30 He who, as protagonist, had devoted himself, body and soul, to his fel ow-citizens, and hadpreserved the love he felt even in youth for those of his own race, gave orders for Nicanor's head to be cut off,with his arm up to the shoulder, and taken to Jerusalem.
31 E quando vi fu arrivato, radunati i concittadini, e i sacordoti presso all'altare, chiamò anche quelli, che erano nella cittadella,	31 When he arrived there himself, he cal ed his countrymen together, stationed the priests in front of thealtar and then sent for the people from the Citadel.
32 E fatto vedere il capo di Nicanore, e la scellerata mano, la quale egli avea stesa verso la casa santa dell'onnipotente Iddio con vantamenti tanto superbi,	32 He showed them the head of the abominable Nicanor, and the hand which this infamous man hadstretched out so insolently against the holy House of the Almighty.
33 Comandò, che la lingua dell'empio Nicanore fosse tagliata in piccoli pezzi, e gettata agli uccelli; la mano poi dell'insensato fosse appesa dirimpetto al tempio.	33 Then, cutting out godless Nicanor's tongue, he gave orders for it to be fed piecemeal to the birds,and for the salary of his folly to be hung up in front of the Temple.
34 Allora tutti benedissero il Signore del cielo, dicendo: Benedetto colui, che ha serbato esente da profanazione il suo tempio.	34 At this, everyone sent blessings heavenwards to the glorious Lord, saying, 'Blessed be he who haspreserved his holy place from pol ution!'
35 Egli appese anche il capo di Nicanore sulla cima della cittadella, affin chè fosse visibile, e manifesto segno dell'aiuto di Dio.	35 He hung Nicanor's head from the Citadel, a clear and evident sign to al of the help of the Lord.
36 Or tutti di comune consenso determinarono, che non fosse in alcuni modo da passarsi quel giórno senza solennità;	36 They al decreed by public vote never to let that day go by unobserved, but to celebrate thethirteenth day of the twelfth month, cal ed Adar in Aramaic, the eve of what is called the Day of Mordecai.
37 E che questa solennità si facesse a' tredici del mese chiamato con voce Siriaca Adar, un giorno prima del giorno di Mardocheo.	37 So ends the episode of Nicanor, and as, since then, the city has remained in the possession of theHebrews, I shal bring my own work to an end here too.
38 Fatte queste cose contro Nicanore essendo stati gli Ebrei da quel tempo in poi padroni della città, io pure qui porrò fine al mio racconto.	38 If it is wel composed and to the point, that is just what I wanted. If it is worthless and mediocre, thatis al I could manage.
39 Il quale se cammina bene, e come a una storia conviensi, questo io pure bramai; se poi non con tutta dignità, mi si conceda perdono:	39 Just as it is injurious to drink wine by itself, or again water alone, whereas wine mixed with water ispleasant and produces a delightful sense of wel -being, so skil in presenting the incidents is what delights theunderstanding of those who read the book. And here I close.
40 Perocché siccome il bere o sempre vino, o sempre acqua fa danno, ma diletta il far uso or dell'una, or dell'altro; così il ragionare se è sempre molto limato non sarà gradito ai lettori. Qui adunque farò fine.
