1 Allora Maccabeo, e quelli che eran con lui protetti dal Signore ricuperarono il tempio, e la città:	1 At that time Antiochus returned with dishonour out of Persia.
2 E gettarono a terra gli altari eretti per le piazze dagli stranieri, e i templi.	2 For he had entered into the city called Persepolis, and attempted to rob the temple, and to oppress the city: but the multitude running together to arms, put them to flight: and so it fell out that Antiochus being put to flight returned with disgrace.
3 E purificato il tempio fecero un altare nuovo, e battuto il fuoco per via di pietre focaie offersero sagrifizj, e l'incenso dopo due anni, e vi poser le lampane, e i pani della proposizione.	3 Now when he was come about Ecbatana, he received the news of what had happened to Nicanor and Timotheus.
4 Fatte queste cose, prostati per terra pregavano il Signore, che non avesser mai più a cadere in simili sciagure, e che ove mai avesser peccato ricevesser gastigo più mite, e non fosser dati in potere di uomini barbari, e bestemmiatori.	4 And swelling with anger he thought to revenge upon the Jews the injury done by them that had put him to flight. And therefore he commanded his chariot to be driven, without stopping in his journey, the judgment of heaven urging him forward, because he had spoken so proudly, that he would come to Jerusalem, and make it a common burying place of the Jews.
5 Or egli avvenne, che nel giorno in cui il tempio era stato profanato dagli stranieri, nello stesso giorno ne fu fatta la purificazione ai venticinque del mese di Casleu.	5 But the Lord the God of Israel, that seeth all things, struck him with an incurable and an invisible plague. For as soon as he had ended these words, a dreadful pain in his bowels came upon him, and bitter torments of the inner parts.
6 E con letizia fecer festa per otto giorni, come pei tabernacoli, rammemorando come poco prima aveano passato il di dei tabernacoli stando per le montagne, e nelle caverne a guisa di fiere.	6 And indeed very justly, seeing he had tormented the bowels of others with many and new torments, albeit he by no means ceased from his malice.
7 Per la qunl cosa portavavano dei tirsi, e dei rami verdeggianti, e delle palme in onore di lui, che diede loro la fortuna di purificare il suo tempio.	7 Moreover being filled with pride, breathing out fire in his rage against the Jews, and commanding the matter to be hastened, it happened as he was going with violence that he fell from the chariot, so that his limbs were much pained by a grievous bruising of the body.
8 E d'unanime consenso fecer pubblico decreto per tutta quanta la nazione Giudea, che que' giorni siano solennizzati tutti gli anni.	8 Thus he that seemed to himself to command even the waves of the sea, being proud above the condition of man, and to weigh the heights of the mountains in a balance, now being cast down to the ground, was carried in a litter, bearing witness to the manifest power of God in himself:
9 La morte di Antioco soprannominato Epifane, fu come dicemmo.	9 So that worms swarmed out of the body of this man, and whilst he lived in sorrow and pain, his flesh fell off, and the filthiness of his smell was noisome to the army.
10 Adesso poi racconteremo le geste di Eupatore figliuolo dell'empio Antioco, riepilogando i mali avvenuti nelle guerre.	10 And the man that thought a little to before he could reach the stars of heaven, no man could endure to carry, for the intolerable stench.
11 Perocché egli entrato al possesso del regno diede il maneggio degli affari a un certo Lisia capitano delle milizie della Siria, e della Fenicia.	11 And by this means, being brought from his great pride, he began to come to the knowledge of himself, being admonished by the scourge of God, his pains increasing every moment
12 Perocché Tolomeo detto il Magro avea risoluto di osservare esattamente la giustizia riguardo agli Ebrei, e di mantener loro la pace particolarmente a motivo dell'ingiustizie fatte contro di essi.	12 And when he himself could not now abide his own stench, he spoke thus: It is just to be subject to God, and that a mortal man should not equal himself to God.
13 Ma accusato perciò sovente presso Eupatore dagli amici del re, e tacciato sovente di traditore per avere abbandonata Cipro, di cui gli era stato affidato il governo da Filometore, e perché dopo essere passato al servizio di Antioco Epifane avea disertato anche da lui, finì la vita col veleno.	13 Then this wicked man prayed to the Lord, of whom he was not like to obtain mercy.
14 Ma Gorgia, che aveva il governo di que' luoghi, assoldata gente straniera, frequentemente metteva alle strette i Giudei.	14 And the city to which he was going in haste to lay it even with the ground, and to make it a, common buryingplace, he now desireth to make free.
15 E i Giudei, che occupavano delle fortezze in luoghi opportuni accoglievano quelli, che venivano scacciati da Gerusalemme, e tentavano di far guerra.	15 And the Jews whom he said he would not account worthy to be so much as buried, but would give them up to be devoured by the birds and wild beasts, and would utterly destroy them with their children, he now promiseth to make equal with the Athenians.
16 Ma quelli che erano con Maccabeo, fatta orazione per chiedere al Signore, che li soccorresse, andarono ad assalire le fortezze degli Idumei:	16 The holy temple also which before he had spoiled, he promiseth to adorn with goodly gifts, and to multiply the holy vessels, and to allow out of his revenues the charges pertaining to the sacrifices.
17 E combattendole vigorosamente si fecer padroni di que' luoghi, sconfissero quelli, che si opposero, e in tutto trucidarono nulla meno di venti mila persone.	17 Yea also, that he would become a Jew himself, and would go through every place of the earth, and declare the power of God.
18 Ed essendo fuggiti alcuni in due torri grandemente forti, fornite di rotte le provisioni per difendersi,	18 But his pains not ceasing (for the just judgment of God was come upon him) despairing of life he wrote to the Jews in the manner of a supplication, a letter in these words:
19 Maccabeo lasciò la cura di espugnarle a Simone, e a Giuseppe, e anche a Zaccheo col sufficiente corpo di truppe, che eran con essi, ed egli andò dove i più urgenti bisogni della guerra il chiamavano.	19 To his very good subjects the Jews, Antiochus king and ruler wisheth much health and welfare, and happiness.
20 Ma la gente di Simone per la loro avarizia si lasciaron corrompere col denaro da alcuni che erano in quelle torri, e tirate settantamila di dramme permisero ad alcuni di andarsene.	20 If you and your children are well, and if all matters go with you to your mind, we give very great thanks.
21 Ma riferito il fatto a Maccabeo, adunati i capi del popolo, accusò coloro di aver venduto per denaro i fratelli, lasciando che se n'andassero i loro nemici.	21 As for me, being infirm, but yet kindly remembering you, returning out of the places of Persia, and being taken with a grievous disease, I thought it necessary to take care for the common good:
22 Per la qual cosa fece morire que' traditori, e subitamente si fece padrone delle due torri.	22 Not distrusting my life, but having great hope to escape the sickness.
23 E riuscendo ogni cosa felicemente alle sue armi, e alle sue mani, nelle due fortezze uccise più di venti mila uomini.	23 But considering that my father also, at what time she led an army into the higher countries, appointed who should reign after him:
24 Ma Timoteo, il quale era stato prima vinto da' Giudei, messo insieme un esercito di gente straniera, e raunata la cavallerìa dell'Asia, venne come per impadronirsi colle armi della Giudea.	24 To the end that if any thing contrary to expectation should fall out, or ally bad tidings should be brought, they that were in the countries, knowing to whom the whole government was left, might not be troubled.
25 Ma Maccabèo, e i suoi, mentre egli si avvicinava, pregavano il Signore, spargendo sulle loro teste la terra, e avendo attorno ai fianchi il cilizio,	25 Moreover, considering that neighbouring princes and borderers wait for opportunities, and expect what shall be the event, I have appointed my son Antiochus king, whom I often recommended to many of you, when I went into the higher provinces: and I have written to him what I have joined here below.
26 Prostrati appiè dell'altare, affinchè egli fosse propizio con essi, e nemico a' lor nemici, e avverso ai loro avversarj, come dice la legge.	26 I pray you therefore, and request of you, that remembering favours both public and private, you will every man of you continue to be faithful to me and to my son.
27 Quindi dopo l'orazione prese le armi avanzandosi in qualche distanza dalla città, e avvicinatisi al nemico, si fermarono.	27 For I trust that he will behave with I moderation and humanity, and following my intentions, will be gracious unto you.
28 E al primo spuntar debole vender gli uni, e gli altri a battaglia: e questi aveano col loro valore per mallevadore della vittoria, e del buon evento il Signore; quelli poi aveano per guida nella battaglia l'animo loro.	28 Thus the murderer and blasphemer, being grievously struck, as himself had treated others, died a miserable death in a strange country among the mountains.
29 Ma nel maggior caldo della zuffa gli avversari videro apparire dal cielo cinque uomini sopra cavalli ornati di briglie d'oro, che facevan figura di capitani de' Giudei:	29 But Philip that was brought up with him, carried away his body: and out of fear of the son of Antiochus, went into Egypt to Ptolemee Philometor.
30 De' quali due, preso in mezzo Maccabeo, colle loro armi lo coprivano, e lo difendevano; ma dardi, e fulmini scagliavano contro gli avversari; per la qual cosa accecati, e confusi, e pieni di sbigottimento cadevan per terra.
31 E furono uccisi venti mila cinque cento fanti, e seicento cavalieri.
32 E Timoteo fuggì a Gazara piazza forte, di cui aveva il comando Cherea.
33 E Maccabeo colla sua gente piena di allegrezza assediarono quattro giorni quella piazza.
34 Ma quelli, che v' eran dentro fidandosi della fortezza di quel luogo dicevano infinite villanie, e vomitavano parole da non dirsi.
35 Ma appena spuntò il quinto giorno, venti giovani di quelli che erano con Maccabeo, irritati dalle bestemmie di coloro, si accostarono animosamente alle mura, e con animo risoluto vi saliron sopra:
36 E saliti degli altri nello stesso modo presero a dar fuoco alle torri, e alle porte, e a brugiar vivi quei bestemmiatori.
37 E per due interi giorni devastarono la fortezza, e trovato Timoteo, che si era nascoso in un certo luogo, lo uccisero insieme con Cherea suo fratello, e con Apollofane.
38 Condotte a fine queste imprese, con inni, e cantici benedicevano il Signore, il quale avea fatto cose grandi in Israele, e ad essi avea data la vittoria.
