1 Dopo che Israele fu condotto in schiavitù e Gerusalemme restò deserta, il profeta Geremia sedette pieno di lacrime, e pianse sopra Gerusalemme con questa lamentazione. Col cuore straziato, sospirando e gridando, disse: Come mai siede solitaria la città popolosa? E' diventata come vedova la dominatrice delle nazioni, la regina delle provincie è obbligata al tributo. BET.	1 How doth the city sit solitary, that was full of people how is she become as a widow she that was was great among the nations, and princess among the provinces, how is she become tributary
2 Piange inconsolabile durante la notte, lacrimose son le sue guance; non v'è chi la consoli tra tutti i suoi cari: tutti i suoi amici l'han disprezzata, le son diventati nemici. GHIMEL.	2 She weepeth sore in the night, and her tears are on her cheeks: among all her lovers she hath none to comfort her: all her friends have dealt treacherously with her, they are become her enemies.
3 Giuda è andato in esilio, affranto da dura schiavitù, dimora tra le nazioni, senza trovar ripo­so: tutti i suoi persecutori l'han chiuso in gole anguste. DALET.	3 Judah is gone into captivity because of affliction, and because of great servitude: she dwelleth among the heathen, she findeth no rest: all her persecutors overtook her between the straits.
4 Le vie di Sion piangono, chè nessuno va più alla festa; tutte le sue porte son distrutte; i suoi sacerdoti gemono, le sue vergini sono squallide, ed essa è oppressa dall'amarezza. HE.	4 The ways of Zion do mourn, because none come to the solemn feasts: all her gates are desolate: her priests sigh, her virgins are afflicted, and she is in bitterness.
5 I suoi avversari han preso il sopravvento, i suoi nemici prosperano; perchè il Signore parlò, contro di lei, per le molte sue iniquità; i suoi bambini son menati in schiavitù, cacciati dall'oppressore. VAU.	5 Her adversaries are the chief, her enemies prosper; for the LORD hath afflicted her for the multitude of her transgressions: her children are gone into captivity before the enemy.
6 La figlia di Sion ha perduto tutto il suo splendore. I suoi principi son diventati come arieti che non trovano pastura, e son fuggiti privi di forze davanti a chi loro corre dietro. ZAIN.	6 And from the daughter of Zion all her beauty is departed: her princes are become like harts that find no pasture, and they are gone without strength before the pursuer.
7 Gerusalemme si ricorda dei suoi giorni d'afflizione e di prevaricazione, di tutti i beni preziosi che possedeva fin dai tempi antichi. Quando il suo popolo cadeva per mano nemica, senza aiuto di nessuno, la videro i nemici, e derisero i suoi sabati. HET.	7 Jerusalem remembered in the days of her affliction and of her miseries all her pleasant things that she had in the days of old, when her people fell into the hand of the enemy, and none did help her: the adversaries saw her, and did mock at her sabbaths.
8 Gerusalemme fece un gran peccato, e per questo è divenuta errante: tutti quelli che l'onoravano l'han disprezzata, perchè han veduta la sua vergogna; ed anch'essa, sospirando, nasconde la faccia. TET.	8 Jerusalem hath grievously sinned; therefore she is removed: all that honoured her despise her, because they have seen her nakedness: yea, she sigheth, and turneth backward.
9 La sua immondezza giunge ai suoi piedi; essa non si ricordò del suo fine, ed è caduta precipitosamente, senza aver chi la consoli. Guarda, o Signore, la mia afflizione, chè il nemico trionfa. IOD.	9 Her filthiness is in her skirts; she remembereth not her last end; therefore she came down wonderfully: she had no comforter. O LORD, behold my affliction: for the enemy hath magnified himself.
10 L'oppressore ha stesa la mano sulle cose a lei più care ed essa ha visto entrare nel suo santuario le Genti, riguardo alle quali avevi ordinato che non entrassero nella tua adunanza. CAF.	10 The adversary hath spread out his hand upon all her pleasant things: for she hath seen that the heathen entered into her sanctuary, whom thou didst command that they should not enter into thy congregation.
11 Tutto il suo popolo geme e cerca del pane; diedero le cose più preziose per gli alimenti, per riaver la vita. Guarda, o Signore, e considera come sono avvilita. LAMED.	11 All her people sigh, they seek bread; they have given their pleasant things for meat to relieve the soul: see, O LORD, and consider; for I am become vile.
12 O voi tutti che passate per la via, fermatevi e guardate se v'è dolore simile al mio dolore, or che il Signore m'ha vendemmiata, come disse, nel giorno dell'ira sua furibonda. MEM.	12 Is it nothing to you, all ye that pass by? behold, and see if there be any sorrow like unto my sorrow, which is done unto me, wherewith the LORD hath afflicted me in the day of his fierce anger.
13 Dall'alto mandò nelle mie ossa un fuoco, e m'ha insegnato; tese una rete ai miei piedi, e mi fe' cadere all'indietro; m'ha resa desolata, consumata tutto il giorno dal dolore. NUN.	13 From above hath he sent fire into my bones, and it prevaileth against them: he hath spread a net for my feet, he hath turned me back: he hath made me desolate and faint all the day.
14 Preparò il giogo delle mie iniquità: nelle sue mani divennero un fascio; lo pose sul mio collo. Le mie forze son mancate; il Signore m'ha consegnata a mani dalle quali non potrò uscire. SAMEC.	14 The yoke of my transgressions is bound by his hand: they are wreathed, and come up upon my neck: he hath made my strength to fall, the Lord hath delivered me into their hands, from whom I am not able to rise up.
15 Ha tolti tutti i prodi il Signore di mezzo a me, ha chiamato contro di me il tempo per annientare i miei campioni. Il Signore ha stretta al torchio la vergine figlia di Giuda. AIN.	15 The Lord hath trodden under foot all my mighty men in the midst of me: he hath called an assembly against me to crush my young men: the Lord hath trodden the virgin, the daughter of Judah, as in a winepress.
16 Per questo io piango, gli occhi miei si struggono in lacrime, perchè s'è allontanato da me il consolatore, colui che ravviva l'anima mia. I figli miei son perduti, perchè il nemico ha trionfato. FE.	16 For these things I weep; mine eye, mine eye runneth down with water, because the comforter that should relieve my soul is far from me: my children are desolate, because the enemy prevailed.
17 Sion stende le mani, ma nessuno la consola: il Signore ha dato un ordine contro Giacobbe, che fosse accerchiato dai suoi nemici; Gerusalemme è diventata in mezzo a loro come donna immonda. SADE.	17 Zion spreadeth forth her hands, and there is none to comfort her: the LORD hath commanded concerning Jacob, that his adversaries should be round about him: Jerusalem is as a menstruous woman among them.
18 Il Signore è giusto, perchè ho provocato a sdegno la sua bocca. Ascoltate, ve ne prego, o popoli tutti, guardate il mio dolore: le mie vergini, i miei giovani sono andati in esilio. COF.	18 The LORD is righteous; for I have rebelled against his commandment: hear, I pray you, all people, and behold my sorrow: my virgins and my young men are gone into captivity.
19 Chiamai i miei amici, ed essi mi hanno ingannata. I miei sacerdoti e i miei anziani son periti nella città, mentre cercavano il loro nutrimento per sostenere la loro vita. RES.	19 I called for my lovers, but they deceived me: my priests and mine elders gave up the ghost in the city, while they sought their meat to relieve their souls.
20 Guarda, o Signore, come son tribolata; le mie viscere sono conturbate, il mio cuore è sconvolto dentro di me, perchè son piena d'amarezza: fuori uccide la spada, dentro fa lo stesso la mortalità. SIN.	20 Behold, O LORD; for I am in distress: my bowels are troubled; mine heart is turned within me; for I have grievously rebelled: abroad the sword bereaveth, at home there is as death.
21 Han sentiti i miei gemiti, e non v'è chi mi consoli; tutti i miei nemici han sapute le mie sventure, ed han tripudiato, perchè sono opera tua; manda il giorno della consolazione, e diverranno simili a me. TAU.	21 They have heard that I sigh: there is none to comfort me: all mine enemies have heard of my trouble; they are glad that thou hast done it: thou wilt bring the day that thou hast called, and they shall be like unto me.
22 Ti sia presente tutta la loro malizia, vendemmiali come hai vendemmiato me per tutte le mie iniquità. Chè molti sono i miei gemiti, e il mio cuore è triste.	22 Let all their wickedness come before thee; and do unto them, as thou hast done unto me for all my transgressions: for my sighs are many, and my heart is faint.
