| 1 - Guardate di quale amore ci ha amati il Padre, [concedendoci] di poterci chiamare ed essere di fatto figliuoli di Dio. Perciò il mondo non conosce noi, perchè non ha conosciuto Lui. | 1 See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. |
| 2 Carissimi, noi siamo ora figliuoli di Dio; ma non è ancora manifesto quello che noi saremo. Sappiamo che quando si manifesta, saremo simili a Lui, perchè lo vedremo come Egli è. | 2 Beloved, we are God's children now; it does not yet appear what we shall be, but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. |
| 3 E chiunque ha questa speranza in Lui, santifica se stesso, come Egli pure è santo. | 3 And every one who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure. |
| 4 Chiunque commette il peccato, commette iniquità, perchè il peccato è iniquità. | 4 Every one who commits sin is guilty of lawlessness; sin is lawlessness. |
| 5 Ora voi sapete che Egli è apparso per togliere i nostri peccati; e in Lui non c'è peccato. | 5 You know that he appeared to take away sins, and in him there is no sin. |
| 6 Chiunque rimane in Lui, non pecca; e chiunque pecca non lo ha conosciuto. | 6 No one who abides in him sins; no one who sins has either seen him or known him. |
| 7 Figliuolini, nessuno vi seduca. Chi pratica la giustizia, è giusto; come anch'Egli è giusto. | 7 Little children, let no one deceive you. He who does right is righteous, as he is righteous. |
| 8 Chi commette il peccato, è dal diavolo; perchè il diavolo pecca dal principio. Per questo venne il Figliuol di Dio, per distruggere le opere del diavolo. | 8 He who commits sin is of the devil; for the devil has sinned from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil. |
| 9 Chiunque è nato da Dio, non fa peccato, perchè tiene in sè un germe di Lui; e non può più peccare, perchè è nato da Dio. | 9 No one born of God commits sin; for God's nature abides in him, and he cannot sin because he is born of God. |
| 10 In questo si riconoscono i figli di Dio e i figli del diavolo. Chiunque non pratica la giustizia e non ama il suo fratello, non è da Dio. | 10 By this it may be seen who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not do right is not of God, nor he who does not love his brother. |
| 11 Questo è l'annunzio che avete udito da principio, che vi amiate l'un l'altro. | 11 For this is the message which you have heard from the beginning, that we should love one another, |
| 12 Non come Caino, che era dal maligno, e uccise il proprio fratello. E perchè lo uccise? Perchè le sue opere erano cattive, e quelle del suo fratello giuste. | 12 and not be like Cain who was of the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own deeds were evil and his brother's righteous. |
| 13 Non vi stupite, fratelli, se il mondo vi odia. | 13 Do not wonder, brethren, that the world hates you. |
| 14 Noi sappiamo che siam stati trasportati dalla morte alla vita, perchè amiamo i fratelli. Chi non ama, rimane nella morte. | 14 We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love abides in death. |
| 15 Chiunque odia il proprio fratello è omicida; e voi sapete che nessun omicida ha la vita eterna dimorante in se stesso. | 15 Any one who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him. |
| 16 Da questo abbiamo conosciuto la carità di Dio, perchè Egli ha dato la sua vita per noi; e così noi dobbiam dare la nostra vita per i fratelli. | 16 By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us; and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. |
| 17 Ora se uno avrà dei beni di questo mondo e vedendo il suo fratello nella necessità gli chiuderà il proprio cuore, come la carità di Dio dimora in lui? | 17 But if any one has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God's love abide in him? |
| 18 Figliuolini miei, non amiamo a parole e con la lingua, ma con l'opera e la verità. | 18 Little children, let us not love in word or speech but in deed and in truth. |
| 19 E da questo conosciamo di essere dalla verità, e rassicureremo i nostri cuori dinanzi a Dio. | 19 By this we shall know that we are of the truth, and reassure our hearts before him |
| 20 Poichè se il nostro cuore ci condanna, Dio è maggiore del nostro cuore e conosce tutte le cose. | 20 whenever our hearts condemn us; for God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. |
| 21 Carissimi, se il nostro cuore non ci condanna, abbiamo fiducia dinanzi a Dio; | 21 Beloved, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God; |
| 22 e qualunque cosa domanderemo, la otterremo da Lui; perchè osserviamo i suoi comandamenti, e facciamo quel che a Lui è gradito. | 22 and we receive from him whatever we ask, because we keep his commandments and do what pleases him. |
| 23 E questo è il suo comandamento: che crediamo nel nome del Figliuol suo Gesù Cristo, e ci amiamo l'un l'altro, come Egli ci ha comandato. | 23 And this is his commandment, that we should believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us. |
| 24 E chi osserva i suoi comandamenti, sta in Lui, ed Egli in esso; e dallo Spirito, che Egli ci diede sappiamo che Egli sta in noi. | 24 All who keep his commandments abide in him, and he in them. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit which he has given us. |
