| 1 - Come passa l'alba, passò via il re d'Israele. Quando era fanciullo Israele io l'amai, e dall'Egitto ho chiamato il figlio mio. | 1 When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son. |
| 2 Sì, li hanno chiamati, ma essi ugualmente se ne andarono via dal loro cospetto, immolavano ai Baalim e sacrificavano ai simulacri. | 2 The more I called them, the more they went from me; they kept sacrificing to the Baals, and burning incense to idols. |
| 3 Ed io ho fatto da balia ad Efraim; ho portato essi in braccio, ma non compresero la cura ch'io aveva di loro. | 3 Yet it was I who taught Ephraim to walk, I took them up in my arms; but they did not know that I healed them. |
| 4 Li ho attirati a me con attrattive piene d'umanità e con vincoli d'amore e sono stato come uno che solleva il giogo dalle loro mascelle, e mi chinai su di essi a porger loro da mangiare. | 4 I led them with cords of compassion, with the bands of love, and I became to them as one, who eases the yoke on their jaws, and I bent down to them and fed them. |
| 5 E non torneranno in Egitto; Assur, sarà esso il loro re, perchè hanno rifiutato di convertirsi. | 5 They shall return to the land of Egypt, and Assyria shall be their king, because they have refused to return to me. |
| 6 La spada sarà brandita contro le sue città, consumerà le sue sbarre e le divorerà, a cagione dei loro divisamenti. | 6 The sword shall rage against their cities, consume the bars of their gates, and devour them in their fortresses. |
| 7 Gli uomini del mio popolo staranno in sospeso pel mio ritorno, mentre verranno posti sotto uno stesso giogo che non sarà a loro tolto. | 7 My people are bent on turning away from me; so they are appointed to the yoke, and none shall remove it. |
| 8 Come ti tratterò, Efraim? Ti proteggerò, Israele, o come ti tratterò? Come Adama? ti ridurrò come Seboim? Il mio cuore mi si rivolta dentro, tutto è commosso il mio rincrescimento. | 8 How can I give you up, O Ephraim! How can I hand you over, O Israel! How can I make you like Admah! How can I treat you like Zeboiim! My heart recoils within me, my compassion grows warm and tender. |
| 9 No, io non manderò a esecuzione il furore della mia ira, non mi risolverò a distruggere Efraim, perchè io sono Dio e non uomo; io ci sono in mezzo a te santo e non marcerò contro le città. | 9 I will not execute my fierce anger, I will not again destroy Ephraim; for I am God and not man, the Holy One in your midst, and I will not come to destroy. |
| 10 Cammineranno anzi dietro al Signore che ruggirà come un leone, poichè egli ruggirà e tremeranno i figli del mare. | 10 They shall go after the LORD, he will roar like a lion; yea, he will roar, and his sons shall come trembling from the west; |
| 11 E voleranno, come uccello, dall'Egitto, e come colomba, dalle terre d'Assur e li ristabilirò nella loro dimora, dice il Signore. | 11 they shall come trembling like birds from Egypt, and like doves from the land of Assyria; and I will return them to their homes, says the LORD. |
| 12 Efraim mi ha raggirato col rinnegarmi e la casa d'Israele coll'ingannarmi, ma Giuda discese testimonio con Dio, e con i santi fedele. | 12 Ephraim has encompassed me with lies, and the house of Israel with deceit; but Judah is still known by God, and is faithful to the Holy One. |
