| 1 - Essendo morto Naas, re dei figli di Ammon, e regnando in suo luogo il figlio di lui, | 1 Now after this Nahash the king of the Ammonites died, and his son reigned in his stead. |
| 2 Davide disse: «Mostrerò la mia benevolenza ad Anon figlio di Naas, il quale usò con me molti riguardi». Perciò Davide gli mandò messaggeri per consolarlo della morte del padre suo. Ma giunti costoro nella terra dei figli di Ammon per consolare Anon, | 2 And David said, "I will deal loyally with Hanun the son of Nahash, for his father dealt loyally with me." So David sent messengers to console him concerning his father. And David's servants came to Hanun in the land of the Ammonites, to console him. |
| 3 i principi Ammoniti dissero ad Anon: «Tu forse credi che Davide abbia mandato costoro a consolarti della morte del padre tuo allo scopo di renderti onore; non vedi che i servi di lui sono venuti a te per esplorare, per osservare e per spiare il tuo paese?». | 3 But the princes of the Ammonites said to Hanun, "Do you think, because David has sent comforters to you, that he is honoring your father? Have not his servants come to you to search and to overthrow and to spy out the land?" |
| 4 Perciò Anon fece tosare e radere i servi di Davide, e fece tagliare le loro tuniche dalle natiche fino al piede e li congedò. | 4 So Hanun took David's servants, and shaved them, and cut off their garments in the middle, at their hips, and sent them away; |
| 5 Quando essi furon partiti ed ebbero avvisato Davide di ciò che era avvenuto, egli mandò ad incontrarli (poichè avevano ricevuto una grande ingiuria); e comandò che restassero a Gerico, finchè fosse loro cresciuta la barba: e soltanto dopo facessero ritorno. | 5 and they departed. When David was told concerning the men, he sent to meet them, for the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said, "Remain at Jericho until your beards have grown, and then return." |
| 6 I figli di Ammon, tanto Anon che il resto del popolo, accortisi di aver fatto ingiuria a Davide, spedirono mille talenti d'argento per prendere al loro soldo dalla Mesopotamia e dalla Siria di Maaca e di Soba carri e cavalieri. | 6 When the Ammonites saw that they had made themselves odious to David, Hanun and the Ammonites sent a thousand talents of silver to hire chariots and horsemen from Mesopotamia, from Aram-maacah, and from Zobah. |
| 7 Essi assoldarono trentaduemila carri e il re di Maaca con tutto il suo popolo. Questi, arrivati che furono, si accamparono davanti a Medaba. Anche i figli di Ammon si riunirono dalle loro città e vennero alla guerra. | 7 They hired thirty-two thousand chariots and the king of Maacah with his army, who came and encamped before Medeba. And the Ammonites were mustered from their cities and came to battle. |
| 8 Avendo ciò udito, Davide inviò contro di loro Joab e tutto l'esercito dei suoi guerrieri. | 8 When David heard of it, he sent Joab and all the army of the mighty men. |
| 9 Usciti i figli di Ammon, si schierarono presso la porta della città, mentre i re che erano venuti loro in aiuto presero posizione separatamente nella campagna. | 9 And the Ammonites came out and drew up in battle array at the entrance of the city, and the kings who had come were by themselves in the open country. |
| 10 Accortosi Joab che egli doveva sostenere un combattimento di fronte e dietro alle spalle, elesse i più forti guerrieri di tutto Israele e mosse contro i Siri. | 10 When Joab saw that the battle was set against him both in front and in the rear, he chose some of the picked men of Israel, and arrayed them against the Syrians; |
| 11 Il resto dell'esercito lo affidò ad Abisai suo fratello, perchè movesse contro i figliuoli di Ammon; | 11 the rest of his men he put in the charge of Abishai his brother, and they were arrayed against the Ammonites. |
| 12 poi disse a lui: «Se il Siro mi vincerà, mi verrai in aiuto; se i figliuoli di Ammon avranno sopra di te il sopravvento, io ti sarò di difesa; | 12 And he said, "If the Syrians are too strong for me, then you shall help me; but if the Ammonites are too strong for you, then I will help you. |
| 13 fatti animo: combattiamo valorosamente per il nostro popolo e per la città del Dio nostro; il Signore poi farà ciò che è bene al suo cospetto». | 13 Be of good courage, and let us play the man for our people, and for the cities of our God; and may the LORD do what seems good to him." |
| 14 Joab adunque e il popolo che era con lui si avanzò contro i Siri e dato combattimento li mise in fuga. | 14 So Joab and the people who were with him drew near before the Syrians for battle; and they fled before him. |
| 15 I figli di Ammon al vedere che i Siri erano fuggiti, se ne fuggirono anch'essi dinanzi ad Abisai fratello di Joab ed entrarono nella città. Allora Joab ritornò a Gerusalemme. | 15 And when the Ammonites saw that the Syrians fled, they likewise fled before Abishai, Joab's brother, and entered the city. Then Joab came to Jerusalem. |
| 16 I Siri, avendo visto che erano stati sconfitti da Israele, mandarono messaggeri e fecero venire i Siri che stavano al di là del fiume; e Sofac principe dell'esercito di Adarezer fu alla loro testa. | 16 But when the Syrians saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they sent messengers and brought out the Syrians who were beyond the Euphrates, with Shophach the commander of the army of Hadadezer at their head. |
| 17 Come ciò venne annunziato a Davide, egli riunì tutto Israele, passò il Giordano e mosse contro di essi, e schierato il suo esercito, s'impegnò con loro in battaglia. | 17 And when it was told David, he gathered all Israel together, and crossed the Jordan, and came to them, and drew up his forces against them. And when David set the battle in array against the Syrians, they fought with him. |
| 18 I Siri vennero messi in fuga dagli Israeliti e Davide uccise settemila soldati dei carri e quarantamila pedoni e Sofac capo dell'esercito. | 18 And the Syrians fled before Israel; and David slew of the Syrians the men of seven thousand chariots, and forty thousand foot soldiers, and killed also Shophach the commander of their army. |
| 19 I servi di Adarezer, avendo visto quale sconfitta ebbero da Israele, fecero la pace con Davide e gli si assoggettarono; nè più la Siria volle porgere aiuto agli Ammoniti. | 19 And when the servants of Hadadezer saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they made peace with David, and became subject to him. So the Syrians were not willing to help the Ammonites any more. |
