προσθεις δε ελιους ετι λεγει | 1 Elihu went on speaking. He said: |
μεινον με μικρον ετι ινα διδαξω σε ετι γαρ εν εμοι εστιν λεξις | 2 Be patient a little longer while I explain, for I have more to say on God's behalf. |
αναλαβων την επιστημην μου μακραν εργοις δε μου δικαια ερω | 3 I shal range far afield for my arguments to prove my Maker just. |
επ' αληθειας και ουκ αδικα ρηματα αδικως συνιεις | 4 I guarantee, nothing I shal say wil be untrue: you have a man of sound learning here. |
γιγνωσκε δε οτι ο κυριος ου μη αποποιησηται τον ακακον δυνατος ισχυι καρδιας | 5 God does not reject anyone whose heart is pure |
ασεβη ου μη ζωοποιησει και κριμα πτωχων δωσει | 6 or let the sinner live on in al his power. He does accord fair judgement to the afflicted; |
ουκ αφελει απο δικαιου οφθαλμους αυτου και μετα βασιλεων εις θρονον και καθιει αυτους εις νεικος και υψωθησονται | 7 he does uphold what the upright deserve. When he raises kings to thrones, if they grow proud of theirunending rule, |
και ει πεπεδημενοι εν χειροπεδαις συσχεθησονται εν σχοινιοις πενιας | 8 then he fetters them with chains, they are caught in the bonds of affliction. |
και αναγγελει αυτοις τα εργα αυτων και τα παραπτωματα αυτων οτι ισχυσουσιν | 9 He shows them the import of their deeds, of the sins of pride they have committed. |
αλλα του δικαιου εισακουσεται και ειπεν οτι επιστραφησονται εξ αδικιας | 10 In their ears he sounds a warning, ordering them to turn back from doing wrong. |
εαν ακουσωσιν και δουλευσωσιν συντελεσουσιν τας ημερας αυτων εν αγαθοις και τα ετη αυτων εν ευπρεπειαις | 11 If they take notice and obey him, the rest of their days are prosperous and the years pass pleasantly. |
ασεβεις δε ου διασωζει παρα το μη βουλεσθαι ειδεναι αυτους τον κυριον και διοτι νουθετουμενοι ανηκοοι ησαν | 12 If not, they go down the Canal and perish in their stupidity. |
και υποκριται καρδια ταξουσιν θυμον ου βοησονται οτι εδησεν αυτους | 13 The stubborn, who cherish their anger and do not cry for help when he chains them, |
αποθανοι τοινυν εν νεοτητι η ψυχη αυτων η δε ζωη αυτων τιτρωσκομενη υπο αγγελων | 14 die in the bloom of youth or live among the male prostitutes of the temple. |
ανθ' ων εθλιψαν ασθενη και αδυνατον κριμα δε πραεων εκθησει | 15 But God saves the afflicted by his affliction, warning him in his misery. |
και προσετι ηπατησεν σε εκ στοματος εχθρου αβυσσος καταχυσις υποκατω αυτης και κατεβη τραπεζα σου πληρης πιοτητος | 16 You, too, he would like to snatch from torment. While you were enjoying boundless abundance, withrich food piled high on your table, |
ουχ υστερησει δε απο δικαιων κριμα | 17 you did not bring the wicked to trial and did not give fair judgement to the orphan. |
θυμος δε επ' ασεβεις εσται δι' ασεβειαν δωρων ων εδεχοντο επ' αδικιαις | 18 Beware of being led astray by abundance, of being corrupted by expensive presents. |
μη σε εκκλινατω εκων ο νους δεησεως εν αναγκη οντων αδυνατων και παντας τους κραταιουντας ισχυν | 19 Take the powerful to law, not merely the penniless, those whose arm is strong, not merely the weak. |
μη εξελκυσης την νυκτα του αναβηναι λαους αντ' αυτων | 20 Do not crush people you do not know to instal your relations in their place. |
αλλα φυλαξαι μη πραξης ατοπα επι τουτον γαρ εξειλω απο πτωχειας | 21 Avoid any tendency to wrong-doing, for this is why affliction is testing you now. |
ιδου ο ισχυρος κραταιωσει εν ισχυι αυτου τις γαρ εστιν κατ' αυτον δυναστης | 22 See, God is sublime in his strength and who can teach lessons as he does? |
τις δε εστιν ο εταζων αυτου τα εργα η τις ο ειπας επραξεν αδικα | 23 Who has even told him which course to take, or dared to say to him, 'You have done wrong'? |
μνησθητι οτι μεγαλα εστιν αυτου τα εργα ων ηρξαν ανδρες | 24 Consider, rather, how you may praise his work, a theme that many have sung. |
πας ανθρωπος ειδεν εν εαυτω οσοι τιτρωσκομενοι εισιν βροτοι | 25 This is something that everyone can see, gazing, as we do, from afar. |
ιδου ο ισχυρος πολυς και ου γνωσομεθα αριθμος ετων αυτου και απεραντος | 26 Yes, the greatness of God exceeds our knowledge, the number of his years is past counting. |
αριθμηται δε αυτω σταγονες υετου και επιχυθησονται υετω εις νεφελην | 27 It is he who makes the raindrops smal and pulverises the rain into mist. |
ρυησονται παλαιωματα εσκιασεν δε νεφη επι αμυθητων βροτων [8α] ωραν εθετο κτηνεσιν οιδασιν δε κοιτης ταξιν [8β] επι τουτοις πασιν ουκ εξισταται σου η διανοια ουδε διαλλασσεται σου η καρδια απο σωματος | 28 And the clouds then pour this out, sending it streaming down on the human race. |
και εαν συνη απεκτασεις νεφελης ισοτητα σκηνης αυτου | 29 And who can fathom how he spreads the clouds, or why such crashes thunder from his tent? |
ιδου εκτεινει επ' αυτον ηδω και ριζωματα της θαλασσης εκαλυψεν | 30 He spreads a mist before him and covers the tops of the mountains. |
εν γαρ αυτοις κρινει λαους δωσει τροφην τω ισχυοντι | 31 By these means, he sustains the peoples, giving them plenty to eat. |
επι χειρων εκαλυψεν φως και ενετειλατο περι αυτης εν απαντωντι | 32 He gathers up the lightning in his hands, assigning it the mark where to strike. |
αναγγελει περι αυτου φιλον αυτου κτησις και περι αδικιας | 33 His crashing gives warning of its coming, anger flashes out against iniquity. |
