LXXNEW JERUSALEM
προσθεις δε ελιους ετι λεγει1 Elihu went on speaking. He said:
μεινον με μικρον ετι ινα διδαξω σε ετι γαρ εν εμοι εστιν λεξις2 Be patient a little longer while I explain, for I have more to say on God's behalf.
αναλαβων την επιστημην μου μακραν εργοις δε μου δικαια ερω3 I shal range far afield for my arguments to prove my Maker just.
επ' αληθειας και ουκ αδικα ρηματα αδικως συνιεις4 I guarantee, nothing I shal say wil be untrue: you have a man of sound learning here.
γιγνωσκε δε οτι ο κυριος ου μη αποποιησηται τον ακακον δυνατος ισχυι καρδιας5 God does not reject anyone whose heart is pure
ασεβη ου μη ζωοποιησει και κριμα πτωχων δωσει6 or let the sinner live on in al his power. He does accord fair judgement to the afflicted;
ουκ αφελει απο δικαιου οφθαλμους αυτου και μετα βασιλεων εις θρονον και καθιει αυτους εις νεικος και υψωθησονται7 he does uphold what the upright deserve. When he raises kings to thrones, if they grow proud of theirunending rule,
και ει πεπεδημενοι εν χειροπεδαις συσχεθησονται εν σχοινιοις πενιας8 then he fetters them with chains, they are caught in the bonds of affliction.
και αναγγελει αυτοις τα εργα αυτων και τα παραπτωματα αυτων οτι ισχυσουσιν9 He shows them the import of their deeds, of the sins of pride they have committed.
αλλα του δικαιου εισακουσεται και ειπεν οτι επιστραφησονται εξ αδικιας10 In their ears he sounds a warning, ordering them to turn back from doing wrong.
εαν ακουσωσιν και δουλευσωσιν συντελεσουσιν τας ημερας αυτων εν αγαθοις και τα ετη αυτων εν ευπρεπειαις11 If they take notice and obey him, the rest of their days are prosperous and the years pass pleasantly.
ασεβεις δε ου διασωζει παρα το μη βουλεσθαι ειδεναι αυτους τον κυριον και διοτι νουθετουμενοι ανηκοοι ησαν12 If not, they go down the Canal and perish in their stupidity.
και υποκριται καρδια ταξουσιν θυμον ου βοησονται οτι εδησεν αυτους13 The stubborn, who cherish their anger and do not cry for help when he chains them,
αποθανοι τοινυν εν νεοτητι η ψυχη αυτων η δε ζωη αυτων τιτρωσκομενη υπο αγγελων14 die in the bloom of youth or live among the male prostitutes of the temple.
ανθ' ων εθλιψαν ασθενη και αδυνατον κριμα δε πραεων εκθησει15 But God saves the afflicted by his affliction, warning him in his misery.
και προσετι ηπατησεν σε εκ στοματος εχθρου αβυσσος καταχυσις υποκατω αυτης και κατεβη τραπεζα σου πληρης πιοτητος16 You, too, he would like to snatch from torment. While you were enjoying boundless abundance, withrich food piled high on your table,
ουχ υστερησει δε απο δικαιων κριμα17 you did not bring the wicked to trial and did not give fair judgement to the orphan.
θυμος δε επ' ασεβεις εσται δι' ασεβειαν δωρων ων εδεχοντο επ' αδικιαις18 Beware of being led astray by abundance, of being corrupted by expensive presents.
μη σε εκκλινατω εκων ο νους δεησεως εν αναγκη οντων αδυνατων και παντας τους κραταιουντας ισχυν19 Take the powerful to law, not merely the penniless, those whose arm is strong, not merely the weak.
μη εξελκυσης την νυκτα του αναβηναι λαους αντ' αυτων20 Do not crush people you do not know to instal your relations in their place.
αλλα φυλαξαι μη πραξης ατοπα επι τουτον γαρ εξειλω απο πτωχειας21 Avoid any tendency to wrong-doing, for this is why affliction is testing you now.
ιδου ο ισχυρος κραταιωσει εν ισχυι αυτου τις γαρ εστιν κατ' αυτον δυναστης22 See, God is sublime in his strength and who can teach lessons as he does?
τις δε εστιν ο εταζων αυτου τα εργα η τις ο ειπας επραξεν αδικα23 Who has even told him which course to take, or dared to say to him, 'You have done wrong'?
μνησθητι οτι μεγαλα εστιν αυτου τα εργα ων ηρξαν ανδρες24 Consider, rather, how you may praise his work, a theme that many have sung.
πας ανθρωπος ειδεν εν εαυτω οσοι τιτρωσκομενοι εισιν βροτοι25 This is something that everyone can see, gazing, as we do, from afar.
ιδου ο ισχυρος πολυς και ου γνωσομεθα αριθμος ετων αυτου και απεραντος26 Yes, the greatness of God exceeds our knowledge, the number of his years is past counting.
αριθμηται δε αυτω σταγονες υετου και επιχυθησονται υετω εις νεφελην27 It is he who makes the raindrops smal and pulverises the rain into mist.
ρυησονται παλαιωματα εσκιασεν δε νεφη επι αμυθητων βροτων [8α] ωραν εθετο κτηνεσιν οιδασιν δε κοιτης ταξιν [8β] επι τουτοις πασιν ουκ εξισταται σου η διανοια ουδε διαλλασσεται σου η καρδια απο σωματος28 And the clouds then pour this out, sending it streaming down on the human race.
και εαν συνη απεκτασεις νεφελης ισοτητα σκηνης αυτου29 And who can fathom how he spreads the clouds, or why such crashes thunder from his tent?
ιδου εκτεινει επ' αυτον ηδω και ριζωματα της θαλασσης εκαλυψεν30 He spreads a mist before him and covers the tops of the mountains.
εν γαρ αυτοις κρινει λαους δωσει τροφην τω ισχυοντι31 By these means, he sustains the peoples, giving them plenty to eat.
επι χειρων εκαλυψεν φως και ενετειλατο περι αυτης εν απαντωντι32 He gathers up the lightning in his hands, assigning it the mark where to strike.
αναγγελει περι αυτου φιλον αυτου κτησις και περι αδικιας33 His crashing gives warning of its coming, anger flashes out against iniquity.
