Prima lettera di Giovanni 4

1 Carissimi, non prestate fede ad ogni spirito, ma mettete alla prova gli spiriti, per saggiare se provengono veramente da Dio, perché molti falsi profeti sono venuti nel mondo.	1 My dear friends, not every spirit is to be trusted, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God,for many false prophets are at large in the world.
2 In questo potete riconoscere lo Spirito di Dio: ogni spirito che riconosce Gesù Cristo venuto nella carne, è da Dio;	2 This is the proof of the spirit of God: any spirit which acknowledges Jesus Christ, come in humannature, is from God,
3 ogni spirito che non riconosce Gesù, non è da Dio. Questo è lo spirito dell’anticristo che, come avete udito, viene, anzi è già nel mondo.	3 and no spirit which fails to acknowledge Jesus is from God; it is the spirit of Antichrist, whose comingyou have heard of; he is already at large in the world.
4 Voi siete da Dio, figlioli, e avete vinto costoro, perché colui che è in voi è più grande di colui che è nel mondo.	4 Children, you are from God and have overcome them, because he who is in you is greater than he whois in the world.
5 Essi sono del mondo, perciò insegnano cose del mondo e il mondo li ascolta.	5 They are from the world, and therefore the world inspires what they say, and listens to them.
6 Noi siamo da Dio: chi conosce Dio ascolta noi; chi non è da Dio non ci ascolta. Da questo noi distinguiamo lo spirito della verità e lo spirito dell’errore.	6 We are from God; whoever recognises God listens to us; anyone who is not from God refuses to listento us. This is how we can distinguish the spirit of truth from the spirit of falsehood.
7 Carissimi, amiamoci gli uni gli altri, perché l’amore è da Dio: chiunque ama è stato generato da Dio e conosce Dio.	7 My dear friends, let us love one another, since love is from God and everyone who loves is a child ofGod and knows God.
8 Chi non ama non ha conosciuto Dio, perché Dio è amore.	8 Whoever fails to love does not know God, because God is love.
9 In questo si è manifestato l’amore di Dio in noi: Dio ha mandato nel mondo il suo Figlio unigenito, perché noi avessimo la vita per mezzo di lui.	9 This is the revelation of God's love for us, that God sent his only Son into the world that we might havelife through him.
10 In questo sta l’amore: non siamo stati noi ad amare Dio, ma è lui che ha amato noi e ha mandato il suo Figlio come vittima di espiazione per i nostri peccati.	10 Love consists in this: it is not we who loved God, but God loved us and sent his Son to expiate oursins.
11 Carissimi, se Dio ci ha amati così, anche noi dobbiamo amarci gli uni gli altri.	11 My dear friends, if God loved us so much, we too should love one another.
12 Nessuno mai ha visto Dio; se ci amiamo gli uni gli altri, Dio rimane in noi e l’amore di lui è perfetto in noi.	12 No one has ever seen God, but as long as we love one another God remains in us and his love comesto its perfection in us.
13 In questo si conosce che noi rimaniamo in lui ed egli in noi: egli ci ha donato il suo Spirito.	13 This is the proof that we remain in him and he in us, that he has given us a share in his Spirit.
14 E noi stessi abbiamo veduto e attestiamo che il Padre ha mandato il suo Figlio come salvatore del mondo.	14 We ourselves have seen and testify that the Father sent his Son as Saviour of the world.
15 Chiunque confessa che Gesù è il Figlio di Dio, Dio rimane in lui ed egli in Dio.	15 Anyone who acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God remains in him and he in God.
16 E noi abbiamo conosciuto e creduto l’amore che Dio ha in noi. Dio è amore; chi rimane nell’amore rimane in Dio e Dio rimane in lui.	16 We have recognised for ourselves, and put our faith in, the love God has for us. God is love, andwhoever remains in love remains in God and God in him.
17 In questo l’amore ha raggiunto tra noi la sua perfezione: che abbiamo fiducia nel giorno del giudizio, perché come è lui, così siamo anche noi, in questo mondo.	17 Love comes to its perfection in us when we can face the Day of Judgement fearlessly, because evenin this world we have become as he is.
18 Nell’amore non c’è timore, al contrario l’amore perfetto scaccia il timore, perché il timore suppone un castigo e chi teme non è perfetto nell’amore.	18 In love there is no room for fear, but perfect love drives out fear, because fear implies punishment andno one who is afraid has come to perfection in love.
19 Noi amiamo perché egli ci ha amati per primo.	19 Let us love, then, because he first loved us.
20 Se uno dice: «Io amo Dio» e odia suo fratello, è un bugiardo. Chi infatti non ama il proprio fratello che vede, non può amare Dio che non vede.	20 Anyone who says 'I love God' and hates his brother, is a liar, since whoever does not love the brotherwhom he can see cannot love God whom he has not seen.
21 E questo è il comandamento che abbiamo da lui: chi ama Dio, ami anche suo fratello.	21 Indeed this is the commandment we have received from him, that whoever loves God, must also lovehis brother.
