1 Essa è il libro dei decreti di Dio e la legge che sussiste in eterno; tutti coloro che si attengono ad essa avranno la vita, quanti l’abbandonano moriranno.	1 She is the book of the precepts of God, the law that endures forever; All who cling to her will live, but those will die who forsake her.
2 Ritorna, Giacobbe, e accoglila, cammina allo splendore della sua luce.	2 Turn, O Jacob, and receive her: walk by her light toward splendor.
3 Non dare a un altro la tua gloria né i tuoi privilegi a una nazione straniera.	3 Give not your glory to another, your privileges to an alien race.
4 Beati siamo noi, o Israele, perché ciò che piace a Dio è da noi conosciuto.	4 Blessed are we, O Israel; for what pleases God is known to us!
5 Coraggio, popolo mio, tu, memoria d’Israele!	5 Fear not, my people! Remember, Israel,
6 Siete stati venduti alle nazioni non per essere annientati, ma perché avete fatto adirare Dio siete stati consegnati ai nemici.	6 You were sold to the nations not for your destruction; It was because you angered God that you were handed over to your foes.
7 Avete irritato il vostro creatore, sacrificando a dèmoni e non a Dio.	7 For you provoked your Maker with sacrifices to demons, to no-gods;
8 Avete dimenticato chi vi ha allevati, il Dio eterno, avete afflitto anche colei che vi ha nutriti, Gerusalemme.	8 You forsook the Eternal God who nourished you, and you grieved Jerusalem who fostered you.
9 Essa ha visto piombare su di voi l’ira divina e ha esclamato: «Ascoltate, città vicine di Sion, Dio mi ha mandato un grande dolore.	9 She indeed saw coming upon you the anger of God; and she said: "Hear, you neighbors of Zion! God has brought great mourning upon me,
10 Ho visto, infatti, la schiavitù in cui l’Eterno ha condotto i miei figli e le mie figlie.	10 For I have seen the captivity that the Eternal God has brought upon my sons and daughters.
11 Io li avevo nutriti con gioia e li ho lasciati andare con pianto e dolore.	11 With joy I fostered them; but with mourning and lament I let them go.
12 Nessuno goda di me nel vedermi vedova e abbandonata da molti; sono stata lasciata sola per i peccati dei miei figli, perché hanno deviato dalla legge di Dio,	12 Let no one gloat over me, a widow, bereft of many: For the sins of my children I am left desolate, because they turned from the law of God,
13 non hanno riconosciuto i suoi decreti, non hanno seguito i suoi comandamenti, non hanno proceduto per i sentieri della dottrina, secondo la sua giustizia.	13 and did not acknowledge his statutes; In the ways of God's commandments they did not walk, nor did they tread the disciplined paths of his justice.
14 Venite, o città vicine di Sion, ricordatevi la schiavitù in cui l’Eterno ha condotto i miei figli e le mie figlie.	14 "Let Zion's neighbors come, to take note of the captivity of my sons and daughters, brought upon them by the Eternal God.
15 Ha mandato contro di loro una nazione da lontano, una nazione malvagia di lingua straniera, che non ha avuto rispetto dei vecchi né pietà dei bambini.	15 He has brought against them a nation from afar, a nation ruthless and of alien speech, That has neither reverence for age nor tenderness for childhood;
16 Hanno strappato via i prediletti della vedova e l’hanno lasciata sola, senza figlie».	16 They have led away this widow's cherished sons, have left me solitary, without daughters.
17 E io come posso aiutarvi?	17 What can I do to help you?
18 Chi vi ha afflitto con tanti mali saprà liberarvi dalle mani dei vostri nemici.	18 He who has brought this evil upon you must himself deliver you from your enemies' hands.
19 Andate, figli miei, andate, io sono rimasta sola.	19 Farewell, my children, farewell: I am left desolate.
20 Ho deposto l’abito di pace, ho indossato la veste di sacco per la supplica, griderò all’Eterno per tutti i miei giorni.	20 I have taken off the garment of peace, have put on sackcloth for my prayer of supplication, and while I live I will cry out to the Eternal God.
21 Coraggio, figli miei, gridate a Dio, ed egli vi libererà dall’oppressione e dalle mani dei nemici.	21 "Fear not, my children; call upon God, who will deliver you from oppression at enemy hands.
22 Io, infatti, ho sperato dall’Eterno la vostra salvezza e una grande gioia mi è venuta dal Santo, per la misericordia che presto vi giungerà dall’Eterno, vostro salvatore.	22 I have trusted in the Eternal God for your welfare, and joy has come to me from the Holy One Because of the mercy that will swiftly reach you from your eternal savior.
23 Vi ho lasciati andare con dolore e pianto, ma Dio vi ricondurrà a me con letizia e gioia, per sempre.	23 With mourning and lament I sent you forth, but God will give you back to me with enduring gladness and joy.
24 Come ora le città vicine di Sion vedono la vostra schiavitù, così ben presto vedranno la salvezza che vi giungerà dal vostro Dio; essa verrà a voi con grande gloria e splendore dell’Eterno.	24 As Zion's neighbors lately saw you taken captive, so shall they soon see God's salvation come to you, with great glory and the splendor of the Eternal God.
25 Figli, sopportate con pazienza la collera che da Dio è venuta su di voi. Il tuo nemico ti ha perseguitato, ma vedrai ben presto la sua rovina e gli calpesterai la nuca.	25 "My children, bear patiently the anger that has come from God upon you; Your enemies have persecuted you, and you will soon see their destruction and trample upon their necks.
26 I miei teneri figli hanno camminato per aspri sentieri, sono stati portati via come gregge rapito dal nemico.	26 My pampered children have trodden rough roads, carried off by their enemies like sheep in a raid.
27 Coraggio, figli, gridate a Dio, poiché si ricorderà di voi colui che vi ha afflitti.	27 Fear not, my children; call out to God! He who brought this upon you will remember you.
28 Però, come pensaste di allontanarvi da Dio, così, ritornando, decuplicate lo zelo per ricercarlo;	28 As your hearts have been disposed to stray from God, turn now ten times the more to seek him;
29 perché chi vi ha afflitto con tanti mali vi darà anche, con la vostra salvezza, una gioia perenne.	29 For he who has brought disaster upon you will, in saving you, bring you back enduring joy."
30 Coraggio, Gerusalemme! Colui che ti ha dato un nome ti consolerà.	30 Fear not, Jerusalem! He who gave you your name is your encouragement.
31 Sventurati coloro che ti hanno fatto del male, che hanno goduto della tua caduta;	31 Fearful are those who harmed you, who rejoiced at your downfall;
32 sventurate le città in cui sono stati schiavi i tuoi figli, sventurata colei che li ha trattenuti.	32 Fearful are the cities where your children were enslaved, fearful the city that took your sons.
33 Come ha gioito per la tua caduta e si è allietata per la tua rovina, così si affliggerà per la sua solitudine.	33 As that city rejoiced at your collapse, and made merry at your downfall, so shall she grieve over her own desolation.
34 Le toglierò l’esultanza di essere così popolata, la sua insolenza sarà cambiata in dolore.	34 I will take from her the joyous throngs, and her exultation shall be turned to mourning:
35 Un fuoco cadrà su di essa per lunghi giorni per volere dell’Eterno, e per molto tempo sarà abitata da dèmoni.	35 For fire shall come upon her from the Eternal God, for a long time, and demons shall dwell in her from that time on.
36 Guarda a oriente, Gerusalemme, osserva la gioia che ti viene da Dio.	36 Look to the east, Jerusalem! behold the joy that comes to you from God.
37 Ecco, ritornano i figli che hai visto partire, ritornano insieme riuniti, dal sorgere del sole al suo tramonto, alla parola del Santo, esultanti per la gloria di Dio.	37 Here come your sons whom you once let go, gathered in from the east and from the west By the word of the Holy One, rejoicing in the glory of God.
