1 Ioab figlio di Zeruià si accorse che il cuore del re era contro Assalonne.	1 When Joab, son of Zeruiah, observed how the king felt toward Absalom,
2 Allora mandò a chiamare a Tekòa e fece venire una donna saggia e le disse: "Fingi di essere in lutto: mettiti una veste da lutto, non ti ungere con olio e compòrtati da donna che pianga da molto tempo un morto;	2 he sent to Tekoa and brought from there a gifted woman, to whom he said: "Pretend to be in mourning. Put on mourning apparel and do not anoint yourself with oil, that you may appear to be a woman who has been long in mourning for a departed one.
3 poi entra presso il re e parlagli così e così". Ioab le mise in bocca le parole da dire.	3 Then go to the king and speak to him in this manner." And Joab instructed her what to say.
4 La donna di Tekòa andò dunque dal re, si gettò con la faccia a terra, si prostrò e disse: "Aiuto, o re!".	4 So the woman of Tekoa went to the king and fell prostrate to the ground in homage, saying, "Help, your majesty!"
5 Il re le disse: "Che hai?". Rispose: "Ahimè! Io sono una vedova; mio marito è morto.	5 The king said to her, "What do you want?" She replied: "Alas, I am a widow; my husband is dead.
6 La tua schiava aveva due figli, ma i due vennero tra di loro a contesa in campagna e nessuno li separava; così uno colpì l'altro e l'uccise.	6 Your servant had two sons, who quarreled in the field. There being no one to part them, one of them struck his brother and killed him.
7 Ed ecco tutta la famiglia è insorta contro la tua schiava dicendo: consegnaci l'uccisore del fratello, perché lo facciamo morire per vendicare il fratello che egli ha ucciso. Elimineranno così anche l'erede e spegneranno l'ultima bracia che mi è rimasta e non lasceranno a mio marito né nome, né discendenza sulla terra".	7 Then the whole clan confronted your servant and demanded: 'Give up the one who killed his brother. We must put him to death for the life of his brother whom he has slain; we must extinguish the heir also.' Thus they will quench my remaining hope and leave my husband neither name nor posterity upon the earth."
8 Il re disse alla donna: "Va' pure a casa: io darò ordini a tuo riguardo".	8 The king then said to the woman: "Go home. I will issue a command on your behalf."
9 La donna di Tekòa disse al re: "Re mio signore, la colpa cada su di me e sulla casa di mio padre, ma il re e il suo trono sono innocenti".	9 The woman of Tekoa answered him, "Let me and my family be to blame, my lord king; you and your throne are innocent."
10 E il re: "Se qualcuno parla contro di te, conducilo da me e vedrai che non ti molesterà più".	10 Then the king said, "If anyone says a word to you, have him brought to me, and he shall not touch you again."
11 Riprese: "Il re pronunzi il nome del Signore suo Dio perché il vendicatore del sangue non aumenti la disgrazia e non mi sopprimano il figlio". Egli rispose: "Per la vita del Signore, non cadrà a terra un capello di tuo figlio!".	11 But she went on to say, "Please, your majesty, keep in mind the LORD your God, that the avenger of blood may not go too far in destruction and that my son may not be done away with." He replied, "As the LORD lives, not a hair of your son shall fall to the ground."
12 Allora la donna disse: "La tua schiava possa dire una parola al re mio signore!". Egli rispose: "Parla".	12 The woman continued, "Please let your servant say still another word to my lord the king." He replied, "Speak."
13 Riprese la donna: "Allora perché pensi così contro il popolo di Dio? Intanto il re, pronunziando questa sentenza si è come dichiarato colpevole, per il fatto che il re non fa ritornare colui che ha bandito.	13 So the woman said: "Why, then, do you think of this same kind of thing against the people of God? In pronouncing as he has, the king shows himself guilty, for not bringing back his own banished son.
14 Noi dobbiamo morire e siamo come acqua versata in terra, che non si può più raccogliere, e Dio non ridà la vita. Il re pensi qualche piano perché il proscritto non sia più bandito lontano da lui.	14 We must indeed die; we are then like water that is poured out on the ground and cannot be gathered up. Yet, though God does not bring back life, he does take thought how not to banish anyone from him.
15 Ora, se io sono venuta a parlare così al re mio signore, è perché la gente mi ha fatto paura e la tua schiava ha detto: Voglio parlare al re; forse il re farà quanto gli dirà la sua schiava;	15 And now, if I have presumed to speak of this matter to your majesty, it is because the people have given me cause to fear. And so your servant thought: 'Let me speak to the king. Perhaps he will grant the petition of his maidservant.
16 il re ascolterà la sua schiava e la libererà dalle mani di quelli che cercano di sopprimere me e mio figlio dalla eredità di Dio".	16 For the king must surely consent to free his servant from the grasp of one who would seek to destroy me and my son as well from God's inheritance.'"
17 La donna concluse: "La parola del re mio signore conceda la calma. Perché il re mio signore è come un angelo di Dio per distinguere il bene e il male. Il Signore tuo Dio sia con te!".	17 And the woman concluded: "Let the word of my lord the king provide a resting place; indeed, my lord the king is like an angel of God, evaluating good and bad. The LORD your God be with you."
18 Il re rispose e disse alla donna: "Non tenermi nascosto nulla di quello che io ti domanderò". La donna disse: "Parli pure il re mio signore".	18 The king answered the woman, "Now do not conceal from me anything I may ask you!" The woman said, "Let my lord the king speak."
19 Disse il re: "La mano di Ioab non è forse con te in tutto questo?". La donna rispose: "Per la tua vita, o re mio signore, non si può andare né a destra né a sinistra di quanto ha detto il re mio signore! Proprio il tuo servo Ioab mi ha dato questi ordini e ha messo tutte queste parole in bocca alla tua schiava.	19 So the king asked, "Is Joab involved with you in all this?" And the woman answered: "As you live, my lord the king, it is just as your majesty has said, and not otherwise. It was your servant Joab who instructed me and told your servant all these things she was to say.
20 Per dare alla cosa un'altra faccia, il tuo servo Ioab ha agito così; ma il mio signore ha la saggezza di un angelo di Dio e sa quanto avviene sulla terra".	20 Your servant Joab did this to come at the issue in a roundabout way. But my lord is as wise as an angel of God, so that he knows all things on earth."
21 Allora il re disse a Ioab: "Ecco, voglio fare quello che hai chiesto; va' dunque e fa' tornare il giovane Assalonne".	21 Then the king said to Joab: "I hereby grant this request. Go, therefore, and bring back young Absalom."
22 Ioab si gettò con la faccia a terra, si prostrò, benedisse il re e disse: "Oggi il tuo servo sa di aver trovato grazia ai tuoi occhi, re mio signore, poiché il re ha fatto quello che il suo servo gli ha chiesto".	22 Falling prostrate to the ground in homage and blessing the king, Joab said, "This day I know that I am in good favor with you, my lord the king, since the king has granted the request of his servant."
23 Ioab dunque si alzò, andò a Ghesùr e condusse Assalonne a Gerusalemme.	23 Joab then went off to Geshur and brought Absalom to Jerusalem.
24 Ma il re disse: "Si ritiri in casa e non veda la mia faccia". Così Assalonne si ritirò in casa e non vide la faccia del re.	24 But the king said, "Let him go to his own house; he shall not appear before me." So Absalom went off to his house and did not appear before the king.
25 Ora in tutto Israele non vi era uomo che fosse tanto lodato per la sua bellezza quanto Assalonne; dalle piante dei piedi alla cima del capo, non vi era in lui un difetto alcuno.	25 In all Israel there was not a man who could so be praised for his beauty as Absalom, who was without blemish from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head.
26 Quando si faceva tagliare i capelli, e se li faceva tagliare ogni anno perché la capigliatura gli pesava troppo, egli pesava i suoi capelli e il peso era di duecento sicli a peso del re.	26 When he shaved his head--which he used to do at the end of every year, because his hair became too heavy for him--the hair weighed two hundred shekels according to the royal standard.
27 Ad Assalonne nacquero tre figli e una figlia chiamata Tamàr, che era donna di bell'aspetto.	27 Absalom had three sons born to him, besides a daughter named Tamar, who was a beautiful woman.
28 Assalonne abitò in Gerusalemme due anni, senza vedere la faccia del re.	28 Absalom lived in Jerusalem for two years without appearing before the king.
29 Poi Assalonne convocò Ioab per mandarlo dal re; ma egli non volle andare da lui; lo convocò una seconda volta, ma Ioab non volle andare.	29 Then he summoned Joab to send him to the king, but Joab would not come to him. Although he summoned him a second time, Joab refused to come.
30 Allora Assalonne disse ai suoi servi: "Vedete, il campo di Ioab è vicino al mio e vi è l'orzo; andate ed appiccatevi il fuoco!". I servi di Assalonne appiccarono il fuoco al campo.	30 He therefore instructed his servants: "You see Joab's field that borders mine, on which he has barley. Go, set it on fire." And so Absalom's servants set the field on fire. Joab's farmhands came to him with torn garments and reported to him what had been done.
31 Allora Ioab si alzò, andò a casa di Assalonne e gli disse: "Perché i tuoi servi hanno dato fuoco al mio campo?".	31 At this, Joab went to Absalom in his house and asked him, "Why have your servants set my field on fire?"
32 Assalonne rispose a Ioab: "Io ti avevo mandato a dire: Vieni qui, voglio mandarti a dire al re: Perché sono tornato da Ghesùr? Sarebbe meglio per me se fossi rimasto là. Ora voglio vedere la faccia del re e, se vi è in me colpa, mi faccia morire!".	32 Absalom answered Joab: "I was summoning you to come here, that I may send you to the king to say: 'Why did I come back from Geshur? I would be better off if I were still there!' Now, let me appear before the king. If I am guilty, let him put me to death."
33 Ioab allora andò dal re e gli riferì la cosa. Il re fece chiamare Assalonne, il quale venne e si prostrò con la faccia a terra davanti a lui; il re baciò Assalonne.	33 Joab went to the king and reported this. The king then called Absalom, who came to him and in homage fell on his face to the ground before the king. Then the king kissed him.
