1 Dicono fra loro sragionando: "La nostra vita è breve e triste; non c'è rimedio, quando l'uomo muore, e non si conosce nessuno che liberi dagli inferi.	1 And this is the false argument they use, 'Our life is short and dreary, there is no remedy when our endcomes, no one is known to have come back from Hades.
2 Siamo nati per caso e dopo saremo come se non fossimo stati. È un fumo il soffio delle nostre narici, il pensiero è una scintilla nel palpito del nostro cuore.	2 We came into being by chance and afterwards shal be as though we had never been. The breath in ournostrils is a puff of smoke, reason a spark from the beating of our hearts;
3 Una volta spentasi questa, il corpo diventerà cenere e lo spirito si dissiperà come aria leggera.	3 extinguish this and the body turns to ashes, and the spirit melts away like the yielding air.
4 Il nostro nome sarà dimenticato con il tempo e nessuno si ricorderà delle nostre opere. La nostra vita passerà come le tracce di una nube, si disperderà come nebbia scacciata dai raggi del sole e disciolta dal calore.	4 In time, our name wil be forgotten, nobody wil remember what we have done; our life will pass awaylike wisps of cloud, dissolving like the mist that the sun's rays drive away and that its heat dispels.
5 La nostra esistenza è il passare di un'ombra e non c'è ritorno alla nostra morte, poiché il sigillo è posto e nessuno torna indietro.	5 For our days are the passing of a shadow, our end is without return, the seal is affixed and nobodycomes back.
6 Su, godiamoci i beni presenti, facciamo uso delle creature con ardore giovanile!	6 'Come then, let us enjoy the good things of today, let us use created things with the zest of youth:
7 Inebriamoci di vino squisito e di profumi, non lasciamoci sfuggire il fiore della primavera,	7 take our fil of the dearest wines and perfumes, on no account forgo the flowers of spring
8 coroniamoci di boccioli di rose prima che avvizziscano;	8 but crown ourselves with rosebuds before they wither,
9 nessuno di noi manchi alla nostra intemperanza. Lasciamo dovunque i segni della nostra gioia perché questo ci spetta, questa è la nostra parte.	9 no meadow excluded from our orgy; let us leave the signs of our revelry everywhere, since this is ourportion, this our lot!
10 Spadroneggiamo sul giusto povero, non risparmiamo le vedove, nessun riguardo per la canizie ricca d'anni del vecchio.	10 'As for the upright man who is poor, let us oppress him; let us not spare the widow, nor respect oldage, white-haired with many years.
11 La nostra forza sia regola della giustizia, perché la debolezza risulta inutile.	11 Let our might be the yardstick of right, since weakness argues its own futility.
12 Tendiamo insidie al giusto, perché ci è di imbarazzo ed è contrario alle nostre azioni; ci rimprovera le trasgressioni della legge e ci rinfaccia le mancanze contro l'educazione da noi ricevuta.	12 Let us lay traps for the upright man, since he annoys us and opposes our way of life, reproaches us forour sins against the Law, and accuses us of sins against our upbringing.
13 Proclama di possedere la conoscenza di Dio e si dichiara figlio del Signore.	13 He claims to have knowledge of God, and calls himself a child of the Lord.
14 È diventato per noi una condanna dei nostri sentimenti; ci è insopportabile solo al vederlo,	14 We see him as a reproof to our way of thinking, the very sight of him weighs our spirits down;
15 perché la sua vita è diversa da quella degli altri, e del tutto diverse sono le sue strade.	15 for his kind of life is not like other people's, and his ways are quite different.
16 Moneta falsa siam da lui considerati, schiva le nostre abitudini come immondezze. Proclama beata la fine dei giusti e si vanta di aver Dio per padre.	16 In his opinion we are counterfeit; he avoids our ways as he would filth; he proclaims the final end of theupright as blessed and boasts of having God for his father.
17 Vediamo se le sue parole sono vere; proviamo ciò che gli accadrà alla fine.	17 Let us see if what he says is true, and test him to see what sort of end he wil have.
18 Se il giusto è figlio di Dio, egli l'assisterà, e lo libererà dalle mani dei suoi avversari.	18 For if the upright man is God's son, God wil help him and rescue him from the clutches of hisenemies.
19 Mettiamolo alla prova con insulti e tormenti, per conoscere la mitezza del suo carattere e saggiare la sua rassegnazione.	19 Let us test him with cruelty and with torture, and thus explore this gentleness of his and put hispatience to the test.
20 Condanniamolo a una morte infame, perché secondo le sue parole il soccorso gli verrà".	20 Let us condemn him to a shameful death since God wil rescue him -- or so he claims.'
21 La pensano così, ma si sbagliano; la loro malizia li ha accecati.	21 This is the way they reason, but they are misled, since their malice makes them blind.
22 Non conoscono i segreti di Dio; non sperano salario per la santità né credono alla ricompensa delle anime pure.	22 They do not know the hidden things of God, they do not hope for the reward of holiness, they do notbelieve in a reward for blameless souls.
23 Sì, Dio ha creato l'uomo per l'immortalità; lo fece a immagine della propria natura.	23 For God created human beings to be immortal, he made them as an image of his own nature;
24 Ma la morte è entrata nel mondo per invidia del diavolo; e ne fanno esperienza coloro che gli appartengono.	24 Death came into the world only through the Devil's envy, as those who belong to him find to their cost.
