BIBBIA CEI 1974	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Figlio mio, se hai garantito per il tuo prossimo, se hai dato la tua mano per un estraneo,	1 My child, if you have gone surety for your neighbour, if you have guaranteed the bond of a stranger,
2 se ti sei legato con le parole delle tue labbra e ti sei lasciato prendere dalle parole della tua bocca,	2 if you have committed yourself with your lips, if through words of yours you have been entrapped,
3 figlio mio, fa' così per liberartene: poiché sei caduto nelle mani del tuo prossimo, va', gèttati ai suoi piedi, importuna il tuo prossimo;	3 do this, my child, to extricate yourself -- since you have put yourself in the power of your neighbour: go,humble yourself, plead with your neighbour,
4 non concedere sonno ai tuoi occhi né riposo alle tue palpebre,	4 give your eyes no sleep, your eyelids no rest,
5 lìberatene come la gazzella dal laccio, come un uccello dalle mani del cacciatore.	5 break free like a gazel e from the trap, like a bird from the fowler's clutches.
6 Va' dalla formica, o pigro, guarda le sue abitudini e diventa saggio.	6 Idler, go to the ant; ponder her ways and grow wise:
7 Essa non ha né capo, né sorvegliante, né padrone,	7 no one gives her orders, no overseer, no master,
8 eppure d'estate si provvede il vitto, al tempo della mietitura accumula il cibo.	8 yet al through the summer she gets her food ready, and gathers her supplies at harvest time.
9 Fino a quando, pigro, te ne starai a dormire? Quando ti scuoterai dal sonno?	9 How long do you intend to lie there, idler? When are you going to rise from your sleep?
10 Un po' dormire, un po' sonnecchiare, un po' incrociare le braccia per riposare	10 A little sleep, a little drowsiness, a little folding of the arms to lie back,
11 e intanto giunge a te la miseria, come un vagabondo, e l'indigenza, come un mendicante.	11 and poverty comes like a vagrant and, like a beggar, dearth.
12 Il perverso, uomo iniquo, va con la bocca distorta,	12 A scoundrel, a vicious man, he goes with a leer on his lips,
13 ammicca con gli occhi, stropiccia i piedi e fa cenni con le dita.	13 winking his eye, shuffling his foot, beckoning with his finger.
14 Cova propositi malvagi nel cuore, in ogni tempo suscita liti.	14 Trickery in his heart, always scheming evil, he sows dissension.
15 Per questo improvvisa verrà la sua rovina, in un attimo crollerà senza rimedio.	15 Disaster wil overtake him sharply for this, suddenly, irretrievably, he wil be broken.
16 Sei cose odia il Signore, anzi sette gli sono in abominio:	16 There are six things that Yahweh hates, seven that he abhors:
17 occhi alteri, lingua bugiarda, mani che versano sangue innocente,	17 a haughty look, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood,
18 cuore che trama iniqui progetti, piedi che corrono rapidi verso il male,	18 a heart that weaves wicked plots, feet that hurry to do evil,
19 falso testimone che diffonde menzogne e chi provoca litigi tra fratelli.	19 a false witness who lies with every breath, and one who sows dissension among brothers.
20 Figlio mio, osserva il comando di tuo padre, non disprezzare l'insegnamento di tua madre.	20 Keep your father's precept, my child, do not spurn your mother's teaching.
21 Fissali sempre nel tuo cuore, appendili al collo.	21 Bind them ever to your heart, tie them round your neck.
22 Quando cammini ti guideranno, quando riposi veglieranno su di te, quando ti desti ti parleranno;	22 While you are active, they will guide you, when you fal asleep, they wil watch over you, when youwake up, they will converse with you.
23 poiché il comando è una lampada e l'insegnamento una luce e un sentiero di vita le correzioni della disciplina,	23 For the precept is a lamp, the teaching is a light; correction and discipline are the way to life,
24 per preservarti dalla donna altrui, dalle lusinghe di una straniera.	24 preserving you from the woman of bad character, from the wheedling talk of a woman who belongs toanother.
25 Non desiderare in cuor tuo la sua bellezza; non lasciarti adescare dai suoi sguardi,	25 Do not covet her beauty in your heart or let her captivate you with the play of her eyes;
26 perché, se la prostituta cerca un pezzo di pane, la maritata mira a una vita preziosa.	26 a prostitute can be bought for a hunk of bread, but a married woman aims to snare a precious life.
27 Si può portare il fuoco sul petto senza bruciarsi le vesti	27 Can a man carry fire inside his shirt without setting his clothes alight?
28 o camminare sulla brace senza scottarsi i piedi?	28 Can you walk on red-hot coals without burning your feet?
29 Così chi si accosta alla donna altrui, chi la tocca, non resterà impunito.	29 Just so, the man who makes love to his neighbour's wife: no one who touches her wil get offunpunished.
30 Non si disapprova un ladro, se ruba per soddisfare l'appetito quando ha fame;	30 People attach but little blame to a thief who steals only to satisfy his hunger;
31 eppure, se è preso, dovrà restituire sette volte, consegnare tutti i beni della sua casa.	31 yet even he, if caught, wil have to repay sevenfold and hand over all his family resources.
32 Ma l'adultero è privo di senno; solo chi vuole rovinare se stesso agisce così.	32 But the adulterer has no sense; he works his own destruction.
33 Incontrerà percosse e disonore, la sua vergogna non sarà cancellata,	33 All he wil get is blows and contempt, and dishonour never to be blotted out.
34 poiché la gelosia accende lo sdegno del marito, che non avrà pietà nel giorno della vendetta;	34 For jealousy inflames the husband who wil show no mercy when the day comes for revenge;
35 non vorrà accettare alcun compenso, rifiuterà ogni dono, anche se grande.	35 he wil not consider any compensation; lavish what gifts you may, he wil not be placated.
