Proverbi 23

BIBBIA CEI 1974	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Quando siedi a mangiare con un potente, considera bene che cosa hai davanti;	1 If you take your seat at a great man's table, take careful note of what you have before you;
2 mettiti un coltello alla gola, se hai molto appetito.	2 if you have a big appetite put a knife to your throat.
3 Non desiderare le sue ghiottonerie, sono un cibo fallace.	3 Do not hanker for his delicacies, for they are deceptive food.
4 Non affannarti per arricchire, rinunzia a un simile pensiero;	4 Do not wear yourself out in quest of wealth, stop applying your mind to this.
5 appena vi fai volare gli occhi sopra, essa già non è più: perché mette ali come aquila e vola verso il cielo.	5 Fix your gaze on it, and it is there no longer, for it is able to sprout wings like an eagle that flies off tothe sky.
6 Non mangiare il pane di chi ha l'occhio cattivo e non desiderare le sue ghiottonerie,	6 Do not eat the food of anyone whose eye is jealous, do not hanker for his delicacies.
7 perché come chi calcola fra di sé, così è costui; ti dirà: "Mangia e bevi", ma il suo cuore non è con te.	7 For what he is real y thinking about is himself: 'Eat and drink,' he tells you, but his heart is not with you.
8 Il boccone che hai mangiato rigetterai e avrai sprecato le tue parole gentili.	8 You wil spit out whatever you have eaten and find your compliments wasted.
9 Non parlare agli orecchi di uno stolto, perché egli disprezzerà le tue sagge parole.	9 Do not waste words on a fool, who wil not appreciate the shrewdness of your remarks.
10 Non spostare il confine antico, e non invadere il campo degli orfani,	10 Do not displace the ancient boundary-stone, or encroach on orphans' lands,
11 perché il loro vendicatore è forte, egli difenderà la loro causa contro di te.	11 for they have a powerful avenger, and he will take up their cause against you.
12 Piega il cuore alla correzione e l'orecchio ai discorsi sapienti.	12 Apply your heart to discipline, and your ears to instructive sayings.
13 Non risparmiare al giovane la correzione, anche se tu lo batti con la verga, non morirà;	13 Do not be chary of correcting a child, a stroke of the cane is not likely to be fatal.
14 anzi, se lo batti con la verga, lo salverai dagli inferi.	14 Give him a stroke of the cane, you wil save his soul from Sheol.
15 Figlio mio, se il tuo cuore sarà saggio, anche il mio cuore gioirà.	15 My child, if your heart is wise, then my own heart is glad,
16 Esulteranno le mie viscere, quando le tue labbra diranno parole rette.	16 and my inmost self rejoices when from your lips come honest words.
17 Il tuo cuore non invidi i peccatori, ma resti sempre nel timore del Signore,	17 Do not let your heart be envious of sinners but remain steady every day in the fear of Yahweh;
18 perché così avrai un avvenire e la tua speranza non sarà delusa.	18 for there is a future, and your hope wil not come to nothing.
19 Ascolta, figlio mio, e sii saggio e indirizza il cuore per la via retta.	19 Listen, my child, and be wise, and guide your heart in the way.
20 Non essere fra quelli che s'inebriano di vino, né fra coloro che son ghiotti di carne,	20 Do not be one of those forever tippling wine nor one of those who gorge themselves with meat;
21 perché l'ubriacone e il ghiottone impoveriranno e il dormiglione si vestirà di stracci.	21 for the drunkard and glutton impoverish themselves, and sleepiness is clothed in rags.
22 Ascolta tuo padre che ti ha generato, non disprezzare tua madre quando è vecchia.	22 Listen to your father from whom you are sprung, do not despise your mother in her old age.
23 Acquista il vero bene e non cederlo, la sapienza, l'istruzione e l'intelligenza.	23 Purchase truth -- never sel it-wisdom, discipline, and discernment.
24 Il padre del giusto gioirà pienamente e chi ha generato un saggio se ne compiacerà.	24 The father of the upright wil rejoice indeed, he who fathers a wise child wil have joy of it.
25 Gioisca tuo padre e tua madre e si rallegri colei che ti ha generato.	25 Your father and mother will be happy, and she who bore you joyful.
26 Fa' bene attenzione a me, figlio mio, e tieni fisso lo sguardo ai miei consigli:	26 My child, pay attention to me, let your eyes take pleasure in my way:
27 una fossa profonda è la prostituta, e un pozzo stretto la straniera.	27 a prostitute is a deep pit, a narrow wel , the woman who belongs to another.
28 Essa si apposta come un ladro e aumenta fra gli uomini il numero dei perfidi.	28 Yes, like a brigand, she lies in wait, increasing the number of law-breakers.
29 Per chi i guai? Per chi i lamenti? Per chi i litigi? Per chi i gemiti? A chi le percosse per futili motivi? A chi gli occhi rossi?	29 For whom is pity, for whom contempt, for whom is strife, for whom complaint, for whom blows struckat random, for whom the clouded eye?
30 Per quelli che si perdono dietro al vino e vanno a gustare vino puro.	30 For those who linger over wine too long, ever on the look-out for the blended liquors.
31 Non guardare il vino quando rosseggia, quando scintilla nella coppa e scende giù piano piano;	31 Do not gaze at wine, how red it is, how it sparkles in the cup! How smoothly it slips down the throat!
32 finirà con il morderti come un serpente e pungerti come una vipera.	32 In the end its bite is like a serpent's, its sting as sharp as an adder's.
33 Allora i tuoi occhi vedranno cose strane e la tua mente dirà cose sconnesse.	33 Your eyes wil see peculiar things, you will talk nonsense from your heart.
34 Ti parrà di giacere in alto mare o di dormire in cima all'albero maestro.	34 You will be like someone sleeping in mid-ocean, like one asleep at the mast-head.
35 "Mi hanno picchiato, ma non sento male. Mi hanno bastonato, ma non me ne sono accorto. Quando mi sveglierò? Ne chiederò dell'altro".	35 'Struck me, have they? But I'm not hurt. Beaten me? I don't feel anything. When shal I wake up? . . I'lask for more of it!'
