| 1 Perciò, fratelli santi, partecipi di una vocazione celeste, considerate l’apostolo e sommo sacerdote della nostra confessione, Gesù, | 1 That is why al you who are holy brothers and share the same heavenly cal should turn your minds toJesus, the apostle and the high priest of our profession of faith. |
| 2 il quale è fedele a colui che l’ha costituito, come anche Mosè in tutta la casa di lui. | 2 He was trustworthy to the one who appointed him, just like Moses, who remained trustworthy in all hishousehold; |
| 3 Egli, infatti, di gloria tanto maggiore è stato reputato degno a paragone di Mosè, quanto maggiore onore ha, in confronto della casa, chi l’ha costruita. | 3 but he deserves a greater glory than Moses, just as the builder of a house is more honoured than thehouse itself. |
| 4 Ogni casa, infatti, è costruita da qualcuno, ma chi ogni cosa ha costruito è Dio. | 4 Every house is built by someone, of course; but God built everything that exists. |
| 5 E Mosè fu bensì fedele in tutta la casa di lui come servo, a testimonianza di quanto doveva essere manifestato, | 5 It is true that Moses was trustworthy in the household of God, as a servant is, acting as witness to thethings which were yet to be revealed, |
| 6 Cristo, invece, come Figlio sopra la casa di lui. Sua casa siamo noi, se però conserviamo la fiducia e il vanto della speranza. | 6 but Christ is trustworthy as a son is, over his household. And we are his household, as long as wefearlessly maintain the hope in which we glory. |
| 7 Per questo, come dice lo Spirito Santo, oggi, se udite la voce di lui, | 7 That is why, as the Holy Spirit says: If only you would listen to him today! |
| 8 non indurite i vostri cuori come nell’esasperazione, il giorno della tentazione nel deserto, | 8 Do not harden your hearts, as at the rebel ion, as at the time of testing in the desert, |
| 9 dove i vostri padri mi tentarono mettendomi alla prova e videro le opere mie per quarant’anni! | 9 when your ancestors chal enged me, and put me to the test, and saw what I could do |
| 10 Perciò ebbi in uggia quella generazione e dissi : Sempre traviati di cuore costoro! Ma essi non conobbero le mie vie ; | 10 for forty years. That was why that generation sickened me and I said, 'Always fickle hearts, thatcannot grasp my ways!' |
| 11 così giurai nell’ira mia: Non entreranno nel mio riposo! | 11 And then in my anger I swore that they would never enter my place of rest. |
| 12 Badate, o fratelli, che non ci sia forse in qualcuno di voi cuore perverso, così da allontanarsi da Dio vivente; | 12 Take care, brothers, that none of you ever has a wicked heart, so unbelieving as to turn away from theliving God. |
| 13 ma piuttosto esortatevi gli uni gli altri ogni giorno, fino a che risuona l’oggi; onde non s’induri qualcuno di voi per seduzione della colpa. | 13 Every day, as long as this today lasts, keep encouraging one another so that none of you is hardenedby the lure of sin, |
| 14 Poiché siamo divenuti partecipi di Cristo, se però manteniamo salda fino alla fine, l'iniziale fiducia. | 14 because we have been granted a share with Christ only if we keep the grasp of our first confidencefirm to the end. |
| 15 Quando si dice: Oggi, se udite la voce di lui, non indurite i vostri cuori come come nell’Esasperazione, | 15 In this saying: If only you would listen to him today; do not harden your hearts, as at the Rebel ion, |
| 16 chi furono, in effetto, quelli che, pure avendo dito, l’esasperarono? Non forse tutti quelli che o usciti dall’Egitto per opera di Mosè? | 16 who was it who listened and then rebelled? Surely al those whom Moses led out of Egypt. |
| 17 E chi ebbe in uggia per quarant’anni? non forse quelli che peccarono, i cadaveri dei quali caddero nel deserto? | 17 And with whom was he angry for forty years? Surely with those who sinned and whose dead bodiesfel in the desert. |
| 18 A chi poi giurò che non sarebbero entrati nel suo riposo, se non a quelli che furono disobbedienti? | 18 To whom did he swear they would never enter his place of rest? Surely those who would not believe. |
| 19 E vediamo che non poterono entrare per incredulità. | 19 So we see that it was their refusal to believe which prevented them from entering. |
