| 1 Ora, proprio io, Paolo, vi rivolgo un monito per la mansuetudine e la moderazione di Cristo; io che, quando sono presente, sarei tra voi pusillanime, mentre da assente mi mostrerei audace verso di voi! | 1 But I myself, Paul, am begging you, through the meekness and modesty of Christ. I am certainly, by appearances, lowly among you, yet I have confidence in you, even while I am absent. |
| 2 Ve ne prego: che non debba, presente, mostrarmi audace con quell’ardire con cui ho in animo di affrontare certa gente, la quale ci considera come se regolassimo la nostra condotta secondo criteri terreni. | 2 So I am petitioning you, lest I be bold, when present, with that bold confidence that I am considered to have by certain ones who judge us as if we were walking according to the flesh. |
| 3 Noi, anche se viviamo in una fragile natura, non esercitiamo la nostra milizia seguendo criteri terreni. | 3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not battle according to the flesh. |
| 4 Le armi della nostra milizia non sono deboli; anzi hanno la forza di abbattere fortezze per la causa di Dio. Con esse riduciamo al nulla ogni macchinazione | 4 For the weapons of our battles are not carnal, yet still they are powerful with God, unto the destruction of fortifications: tearing down every counsel |
| 5 e superbia che si elevi contro la conoscenza di Dio e facciamo «prigioniero ogni intelletto perché obbedisca a Cristo, | 5 and height that extols itself contrary to the wisdom of God, and leading every intellect into the captivity of obedience to Christ, |
| 6 pronti a punire ogni disobbedienza, quando la vostra obbedienza sia piena. | 6 and standing ready to repudiate every disobedience, when your own obedience has been fulfilled. |
| 7 Considerate pure le cose come balzano agli occhi. Se uno per suo conto è sicuro di appartenere a Cristo, rifletta ancora tra sé che, come egli è di Cristo, così lo siamo noi pure. | 7 Consider the things that are in accord with appearances. If anyone trusts that by these things he belongs to Christ, let him reconsider this within himself. For just as he belongs to Christ, so also do we. |
| 8 Infatti, anche se mi gloriassi ancor più del potere che il Signore ci ha dato — solo per il vostro avanzamento spirituale e non a vostra rovina — non potrei essere svergognato. | 8 And if I were even to glory somewhat more about our authority, which the Lord has given to us for your edification, and not for your destruction, I should not be ashamed. |
| 9 Ciò, perché non sembri che io voglia in qualche modo intimorirvi con le mie lettere. | 9 But let it not be said that I am scaring you by means of epistles. |
| 10 «Le sue lettere — si dice — sono senza dubbio severe e forti, ma la presenza del suo corpo è debole e la sua parola, spregevole». | 10 For they say: “His epistles, indeed, are weighty and strong. But his bodily presence is weak, and his speech is contemptible.” |
| 11 Rifletta bene quel tale, che quali siamo, assenti a parole, per lettera, tali saremo pure presenti, a fatti. | 11 Let someone like this realize that whatever we are in word through epistles, while absent: we are much the same in deed, while present. |
| 12 Certo noi non abbiamo l’ardire di equipararci o confrontarci con certuni così bravi a raccomandare se stessi. E dire che, misurando se stessi in base alla loro propria idea di sé, e confrontando se stessi con se stessi, son privi di intelletto! | 12 For we would not dare to interpose or compare ourselves with certain ones who commend themselves. But we measure ourselves by ourselves, and we compare ourselves with ourselves. |
| 13 All’opposto noi non ci vanteremo fuori di misura, ma in quella misura limitata che risponde a quanto Dio ci elargì per poter giungere anche fino a voi. | 13 Thus, we will not glory beyond our measure, but rather according to the measure of the limit which God has measured out to us, a measure which extends even to you. |
| 14 Noi non ci estendiamo al di là del nostro campo, come nel caso che non fossimo giunti fino a voi. Invero, precedentemente siamo giunti anche fino a voi, coll’evangelo di Cristo. | 14 For we are not overextending ourselves, as if we are not able to reach as far as you are able. For we have gone even as far as you have in the Gospel of Christ. |
| 15 Non ci gloriamo quindi indebitamente delle fatiche altrui. Solo abbiamo speranza che, aumentando la vostra fede, anche noi diventiamo, sia pure in proporzione della nostra misura, sempre più grandi tra voi, | 15 We are not glorying immeasurably over the labors of others. Instead, we hold on to the hope of your growing faith, so as to be magnified in you, according to our own limits, but in abundance, |
| 16 sì da poter annunciare l’evangelo anche in regioni al di là della vostra, senza doverci vantare di quanto già pronto per merito d’altri. | 16 and even so as to evangelize in those places that are beyond you, not in order to glory in the measure of others, but rather in those things which have already been prepared. |
| 17 Chi vuole gloriarsi si glori nel Signore! | 17 But whoever glories, let him glory in the Lord. |
| 18 Poiché non chi raccomanda se stesso è perciò approvato; ma colui che è raccomandato dal Signore. | 18 For it is not he who commends himself who is approved, but rather he whom God commends. |
