Livre de Job 33

JERUSALEM	NEW AMERICAN BIBLE
1 Mais veuille, Job, écouter mes dires, tends l'oreille à toutes mes paroles.	1 Therefore, O Job, hear my discourse, and hearken to all my words.
2 Voici que j'ouvre la bouche et ma langue articule des mots sur mon palais.	2 Behold, now I open my mouth; my tongue and my voice form words.
3 Mon coeur délivrera des paroles de science, mes lèvres s'exprimeront avec sincérité.	3 I will state directly what is in my mind, my lips shall utter knowledge sincerely;
4 C'est l'esprit de Dieu qui m'a fait, le souffle de Shaddaï qui m'anima.	4 For the spirit of God has made me, the breath of the Almighty keeps me alive.
5 Si tu le peux, réponds-moi! Tiens-toi prêt devant moi, prend position!	5 If you are able, refute me; draw up your arguments and stand forth.
6 Vois, je suis ton égal, non un dieu, comme toi, d'argile je suis pétri.	6 Behold I, like yourself, have been taken from the same clay by God.
7 Aussi ma terreur ne t'effraiera point, ma main ne pèsera pas sur toi.	7 Therefore no fear of me should dismay you, nor should my presence weigh heavily upon you.
8 Comment as-tu pu dire à mes oreilles car -- j'ai entendu le son de tes paroles:	8 But you have said in my hearing, as I listened to the sound of your words:
9 "Je suis pur, sans transgression; je suis intact, sans faute.	9 "I am clean and without transgression; I am innocent; there is no guilt in me.
10 Mais il invente des prétextes contre moi et il me considère comme son ennemi.	10 Yet he invents pretexts against me and reckons me as his enemy.
11 Il met mes pieds dans les ceps et surveille tous mes sentiers?"	11 He puts my feet in the stocks; he watches all my ways!"
12 Or, en cela, je t'en réponds, tu as eu tort, car Dieu dépasse l'homme.	12 In this you are not just, let me tell you; for God is greater than man.
13 Pourquoi lui chercher querelle parce qu'il ne te répond pas mot pour mot?	13 Why, then, do you make complaint against him that he gives no account of his doings?
14 Dieu parle d'une façon et puis d'une autre, sans qu'on prête attention.	14 For God does speak, perhaps once, or even twice, though one perceive it not.
15 Par des songes, par des visions nocturnes, quand une torpeur s'abat sur les humains et qu'ils sontendormis sur leur couche,	15 In a dream, in a vision of the night, (when deep sleep falls upon men) as they slumber in their beds,
16 alors il parle à leurs oreilles, il les épouvante par des apparitions,	16 It is then he opens the ears of men and as a warning to them, terrifies them;
17 pour détourner l'homme de ses oeuvres et mettre fin à son orgueil.	17 By turning man from evil and keeping pride away from him,
18 Il préserve ainsi son âme de la fosse, sa vie du passage par le Canal.	18 He withholds his soul from the pit and his life from passing to the grave.
19 Il le corrige aussi sur son grabat par la souffrance, quand ses os tremblent sans arrêt,	19 Or a man is chastened on his bed by pain and unceasing suffering within his frame,
20 quand sa vie prend en dégoût la nourriture et son appétit les friandises;	20 So that to his appetite food becomes repulsive, and his senses reject the choicest nourishment.
21 quand sa chair se consume à vue d'oeil et que se dénudent les os qui étaient cachés;	21 His flesh is wasted so that it cannot be seen, and his bones, once invisible, appear;
22 quand son âme approche de la fosse et sa vie du séjour des morts.	22 His soul draws near to the pit, his life to the place of the dead.
23 Alors s'il se trouve près de lui un Ange, un Médiateur pris entre mille, qui rappelle à l'homme sondevoir,	23 If then there be for him an angel, one out of a thousand, a mediator, To show him what is right for him and bring the man back to justice,
24 le prenne en pitié et déclare: "Exempte-le de descendre dans la fosse: j'ai trouvé la rançon pour savie",	24 He will take pity on him and say, "Deliver him from going down to the pit; I have found him a ransom."
25 sa chair retrouve une fraîcheur juvénile, il revient aux jours de son adolescence.	25 Then his flesh shall become soft as a boy's; he shall be again as in the days of his youth.
26 Il prie Dieu qui lui rend sa faveur, il vient le voir dans l'allégresse. Il annonce à autrui sa justification	26 He shall pray and God will favor him; he shall see God's face with rejoicing.
27 et fait entendre devant les hommes ce cantique: "J'avais péché et perverti le droit: Dieu ne m'a pastraité selon ma faute.	27 He shall sing before men and say, "I sinned and did wrong, yet he has not punished me accordingly.
28 Il a exempté mon âme de passer par la fosse et fait jouir ma vie de la lumière."	28 He delivered my soul from passing to the pit, and I behold the light of life."
29 Voilà tout ce que fait Dieu, deux fois, trois fois pour l'homme,	29 Lo, all these things God does, twice, or thrice, for a man,
30 afin d'arracher son âme à la fosse et de faire briller sur lui la lumière des vivants.	30 Bringing back his soul from the pit to the light, in the land of the living.
31 Sois attentif, Job, écoute-moi bien: tais-toi, j'ai encore à parler.	31 Be attentive, O Job; listen to me! Be silent and I will speak.
32 Si tu as quelque chose à dire, réplique-moi, parle, car je veux te donner raison.	32 If you have aught to say, then answer me. Speak out! I should like to see you justified.
33 Sinon, écoute-moi: fais silence, et je t'enseignerai la sagesse.	33 If not, then do you listen to me; be silent while I teach you wisdom.
