NOVA VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
1 Unde, fratres sancti, vocationis caelestis participes, considerate apostolum et pontificem confessionis nostrae Iesum,1 That is why al you who are holy brothers and share the same heavenly cal should turn your minds toJesus, the apostle and the high priest of our profession of faith.
2 qui fidelis est ei, qui fecit illum, sicut et Moyses in tota domo illius.2 He was trustworthy to the one who appointed him, just like Moses, who remained trustworthy in all hishousehold;
3 Amplioris enim gloriae iste prae Moyse dignus est habitus, quanto ampliorem honorem habet quam domus, qui fabricavit illam.3 but he deserves a greater glory than Moses, just as the builder of a house is more honoured than thehouse itself.
4 Omnis namque domus fabricatur ab aliquo; qui autem omnia fabricavit, Deus est.4 Every house is built by someone, of course; but God built everything that exists.
5 Et Moyses quidem fidelis erat in tota domo eius tamquam famulus in testimonium eorum, quae dicenda erant,5 It is true that Moses was trustworthy in the household of God, as a servant is, acting as witness to thethings which were yet to be revealed,
6 Christus vero tamquam Filius super domum illius; cuius domus sumus nos, si fiduciam et gloriationem spei retineamus.
6 but Christ is trustworthy as a son is, over his household. And we are his household, as long as wefearlessly maintain the hope in which we glory.
7 Quapropter, sicut dicit Spiritus Sanctus:
“ Hodie, si vocem eius audieritis,
7 That is why, as the Holy Spirit says: If only you would listen to him today!
8 nolite obdurare corda vestra sicut in exacerbatione,
secundum diem tentationis in deserto,
8 Do not harden your hearts, as at the rebel ion, as at the time of testing in the desert,
9 ubi tentaverunt me patres vestri in probatione
et viderunt opera mea
9 when your ancestors chal enged me, and put me to the test, and saw what I could do
10 quadraginta annos. Propter quod infensus fui generationi huic et dixi: Semper errant corde.
Ipsi autem non cognoverunt vias meas;
10 for forty years. That was why that generation sickened me and I said, 'Always fickle hearts, thatcannot grasp my ways!'
11 sicut icut iuravi in ira mea:
Non introibunt in requiem meam ”.
11 And then in my anger I swore that they would never enter my place of rest.
12 Videte, fratres, ne forte sit in aliquo vestrum cor malum incredulitatis discedendi a Deo vivo,12 Take care, brothers, that none of you ever has a wicked heart, so unbelieving as to turn away from theliving God.
13 sed adhortamini vosmetipsos per singulos dies, donec illud “ hodie ” vocatur, ut non obduretur quis ex vobis fallacia peccati;13 Every day, as long as this today lasts, keep encouraging one another so that none of you is hardenedby the lure of sin,
14 participes enim Christi effecti sumus, si tamen initium substantiae usque ad finem firmum retineamus,14 because we have been granted a share with Christ only if we keep the grasp of our first confidencefirm to the end.
15 dum dicitur:
“ Hodie, si vocem eius audieritis,
nolite obdurare corda vestra quemadmodum in illa exacerbatione ”.
15 In this saying: If only you would listen to him today; do not harden your hearts, as at the Rebel ion,
16 Qui sunt enim qui audientes exacerbaverunt? Nonne universi, qui profecti sunt ab Aegypto per Moysen?16 who was it who listened and then rebelled? Surely al those whom Moses led out of Egypt.
17 Quibus autem infensus fuit quadraginta annos? Nonne illis, qui peccaverunt, quorum membra ceciderunt in deserto?17 And with whom was he angry for forty years? Surely with those who sinned and whose dead bodiesfel in the desert.
18 Quibus autem iuravit non introire in requiem ipsius, nisi illis, qui increduli fuerunt?18 To whom did he swear they would never enter his place of rest? Surely those who would not believe.
19 Et videmus quia non potuerunt introire propter incredulitatem.
19 So we see that it was their refusal to believe which prevented them from entering.
