1 Ad Moab. Haec dicit Dominus exercituum, Deus Israel: “ Vae super Nabo, quoniam vastata est et confusa! Capta est Cariathaim, confusa est arx et tremuit. | 1 On Moab. Yahweh, God of Israel, says this: Wretched Nebo, for it has been ravaged, Kiriathaim hasbeen shamed and taken, shame and distraction on the citadel, |
2 Non est ultra exsultatio in Moab; in Hesebon cogitaverunt malum contra eam: “Venite et disperdamus eam de gente”. Tu quoque, Madmen, conticesces, sequeturque te gladius. | 2 the pride of Moab is no more! At Heshbon they plotted her downfal , 'Come, let us put an end to her asa nation!' And you too, inhabitants of Madmen, wil be silenced, the sword wil be after you. |
3 Vox clamoris de Oronaim: “Vastitas et contritio magna”. | 3 A cry of agony goes up from Horonaim, 'Devastation! Dire calamity. |
4 Contrita est Moab, auditum fecerunt clamorem usque ad Segor. | 4 Moab has been shattered,' the agonised cries of her little ones ring out. |
5 Per ascensum enim Luith plorans ascendit in fletu, quoniam in descensu Oronaim hostes ululatum contritionis audierunt: | 5 Up the slope of Luhith, weeping they go. On the road down to Horonaim is heard the shriek of disaster, |
6 “Fugite, salvate animas vestras et eritis quasi myricae in deserto”. | 6 'Away! Flee for your lives like the wild donkey into the desert!' |
7 Pro eo enim quod habuisti fiduciam in operibus tuis et in thesauris tuis, tu quoque capieris; et ibit Chamos in transmigrationem, sacerdotes eius et principes eius simul. | 7 Yes, since you relied on your deeds and your wealth, you wil be captured too. Chemosh wil go intoexile, with al his priests and princes. |
8 Et veniet praedo ad omnem urbem, et urbs nulla salvabitur; et peribit vallis, et dissipabuntur campestria, quoniam dixit Dominus. | 8 The despoiler wil descend on every town, not one will escape; the Valley wil be ravaged, the Plain beplundered as Yahweh has said. |
9 Date pennas ad volandum; et civitates eius desertae erunt et inhabitabiles. | 9 Give Moab wings so that she can fly away, for her towns wil be laid in ruins where no one wil ever liveagain. |
10 Maledictus, qui facit opus Domini neglegenter, et maledictus, qui prohibet gladium suum a sanguine. | 10 (Accursed be he who does Yahweh's work negligently! Accursed be he who deprives his sword ofblood!) |
11 Securus fuit Moab ab adulescentia sua et requievit in faecibus suis nec transfusus est de vase in vas et in transmigrationem non abiit; idcirco permansit gustus eius in eo, et odor eius non est immutatus. | 11 From his youth Moab lived at ease, he settled on his lees, never having been decanted, never havinggone into exile: and so he kept his own flavour, his aroma was unchanged. |
12 Propterea, ecce, dies veniunt, dicit Dominus, et mittam ei stratores laguncularum; et sternent eum et vasa eius exhaurient et lagunculas eorum collident. | 12 And so the days are coming, Yahweh declares, when I shal send him decanters to decant him; theywil empty his pitchers and break his wine jars to bits. |
13 Et confundetur Moab a Chamos, sicut confusa est domus Israel a Bethel, in quahabebat fiduciam. | 13 Moab wil be shamed by Chemosh then, as the House of Israel was shamed by Bethel in which theyput their trust. |
14 Quomodo dicitis: “Fortes sumus et viri robusti ad proeliandum”? | 14 How can you say, 'We are heroes, sturdy fighting men'? |
15 Vastata est Moab, et ascenderunt civitates illius, et electi iuvenes eius descenderunt in occisionem, ait rex, Dominus exercituum nomen eius. | 15 Moab has been ravaged, his cities scaled, the flower of his youth goes down to the slaughter,declares the King, whose name is Yahweh Sabaoth. |
16 Prope est interitus Moab ut veniat, et malum eius velociter accurret nimis. | 16 Moab's ruin is coming soon, his downfal comes at top speed. |
17 Lugete super eum, omnes, qui estis in circuitu eius; et universi, qui scitis nomen eius, dicite: “Quomodo confracta est virga fortis, baculus gloriosus?”. | 17 Grieve for him, all you living near him, all you who knew his name. Say, 'How shattered it is, thatmighty rod, that splendid sceptre!' |
18 Descende de gloria et sede in siti, habitatrix filia Dibon, quoniam vastator Moab ascendit ad te, dissipavit munitiones tuas. | 18 Come down from your glory, sit on the parched ground, daughter of Dibon, for the despoiler of Moabhas advanced on you, he has destroyed your strongholds. |
19 Ad viam sta et prospice, habitatrix Aroer; interroga fugientem et eam, quae evasit. Dic: “Quid accidit?”. | 19 Stand by the roadside, keep watch, daughter of Aroer. Question fugitive and runaway, ask, 'What hashappened?' |
20 Confusus est Moab, quoniam victus est. Ululate et clamate; annuntiate in Arnon, quoniam vastatus est Moab. | 20 'Moab has been shattered and shamed. Wail and shriek! Shout along the Arnon, Moab has been laidwaste!' |
21 Et iudicium venit ad terram campestrem super Helon et super Iasa et superMephaath | 21 Judgement has also come on the Plain, on Holon, Jahzah, Mephaath, |
22 et super Dibon et super Nabo et super Bethdeblathaim, | 22 Dibon, Nebo, Beth-Diblathaim, |
23 et superCariathaim et super Bethgamul et super Bethmaon | 23 Kiriathaim, Beth-Gamul, Beth-Meon, |
24 et super Carioth et superBosra et super omnes civitates terrae Moab, quae longe et quae prope sunt. | 24 Kerioth, Bozrah, and al the towns of Moab, far and near. |
25 Abscissum est cornu Moab, et brachium eius contritum est, ait Dominus. | 25 Moab's horn has been cut off, his arm is broken, Yahweh declares. |
26 Inebriate eum, quoniam contra Dominum erectus est; et allidet manum Moab invomitu suo, et erit in derisum etiam ipse. | 26 Make him drunk! He has set himself up against Yahweh; let Moab wal ow in his vomit and become alaughing-stock in his turn. |
27 Nonne in derisum tibi fuit Israel?Num inter fures repertus est? Quotiescumque enim adversum illum loquebaris,caput movebas. | 27 Was Israel not a laughing-stock to you? Was he caught red-handed with the thieves, for you to shakeyour head whenever you mention him? |
28 Relinquite civitates et habitate in petra, habitatores Moab, et estote quasi columba nidificans in parietibus apertae voraginis. | 28 Leave the towns, make the rocks your home, inhabitants of Moab. Learn from the dove that makes itsnest in the wal s of the gaping gorge. |
29 Audivimus superbiam Moab, superbus est valde; sublimitatem eius et arrogantiam et superbiam et altitudinem cordis eius. | 29 We have heard about Moab's pride, so very proud! What arrogance! What pride! What conceit! Whata haughty heart! |
30 Ego scio, ait Dominus, iactantiam eius, et quod non sint rectae fabulationes,nec recta fecerint. | 30 -I know al about his presumption, Yahweh declares, his empty boasting, those empty deeds of his! |
31 Ideo super Moab eiulabo et super Moab universam clamabo,super viros Cirhareseth plorabitur. | 31 -and so I lament for Moab, for al Moab I raise my cry and mourn for the people of Kir-Heres. |
32 Plus quam in planctu Iazer plorabo tibi, vinea Sabama; propagines tuae transierunt mare, usque ad Iazer pervenerunt. Super messem tuam et vindemiam tuam praedo irruit. | 32 More than for Jazer I weep for you, vineyard of Sibmah: your shoots stretched beyond the sea, they reached al the way to Jazer. On your harvest and vintage the despoiler has descended. |
33 Ablata est laetitia et exsultatio de horto et de terra Moab, et vinum de torcularibus sustuli; nequaquam calcator uvae solitum celeuma cantabit. | 33 Gladness and joy have vanished from the orchards of Moab. I have dried up the wine in the presses,the treader of grapes treads no more, the joyful shouting has ceased. |
34 De clamore Hesebon usque Eleale et Iasa dederunt vocem suam, a Segor usque adOronaim, ad Eglatselisiam; aquae quoque Nemrim pessimae erunt. | 34 The cries of Heshbon and Elealeh can be heard as far as Jahaz. The shrieks resound from Zoar toHoronaim and Eglath-Shelishiyah, for even the Waters of Nimrim have become a wasteland. |
35 Et auferam deMoab, ait Dominus, offerentem in excelsis et sacrificantem diis eius. | 35 And in Moab I shal make an end, Yahweh declares, of anyone offering sacrifice on the high placesand anyone offering incense to his gods. |
36 Propterea cor meum ad Moab quasi tibia resonabit, et cor meum ad virosCirhareseth dabit sonitum tibiarum; quia depositum, quod acquisierunt, periit. | 36 That is why my heart sobs like a flute for Moab, sobs like a flute for the people of Kir-Heres, since thewealth he had acquired is lost. |
37 Omne enim caput calvitium et omnis barba rasa erit, in cunctis manibusincisiones et super lumbos cilicium. | 37 Yes, every head is shaved, every beard cut off, gashes are on every hand, sackcloth round everywaist. |
38 Super omnia tecta Moab et in plateiseius omnis planctus, quoniam contrivi Moab sicut vas, quod nemini placet, aitDominus. | 38 On al the housetops of Moab and in al its squares there is nothing but lamenting, for I have brokenMoab like an unwanted pot, Yahweh declares. |
39 Quomodo victa est, et ululaverunt? Quomodo vertit dorsum Moab etconfusus est? Eritque Moab in derisum et in terrorem omnibus in circuitu suo. | 39 How shattered he is! Wail! Moab so shameful y in retreat! Moab has become a laughing-stock, a thingof horror to al his neighbours. |
40 Haec dicit Dominus: Ecce quasi aquila volabit et extendet alas suas ad Moab. | 40 For Yahweh says this: (Look, like an eagle, he wil hover, spreading his wings over Moab.) |
41 Capta sunt oppida, et munitiones comprehensae sunt, et erit cor fortium Moab in die illa sicut cor mulieris parturientis. | 41 The towns have been captured, the strongholds seized. (And the heart of Moab's warriors, that day,wil be like that of a woman in labour pains.) |
42 Et cessabit Moab esse populus, quoniam contra Dominum gloriatus est. | 42 Moab wil be destroyed, no longer a people, for setting itself up against Yahweh. |
43 Pavor et fovea et laqueus super te, o habitator Moab, dicit Dominus. | 43 Terror, the pit and the snare for you, inhabitant of Moab, Yahweh declares. |
44 Qui fugerit a facie pavoris, cadet in foveam, et, qui conscenderit de fovea, capietur laqueo; adducam enim super Moab annum visitationis eorum, ait Dominus. | 44 And anyone who escapes from terror wil fal into the pit, and anyone who climbs out of the pit wil becaught in the snare. Yes, I shall bring all this on Moab when the year comes for punishing them, Yahwehdeclares. |
45 In umbra Hesebon steterunt sine viribus fugientes, sed ignis egressus est de Hesebon, et flamma de medio Sehon, et devoravit tempora Moab et verticem filiorum tumultus. | 45 In the shelter of Heshbon the fugitives have paused, exhausted. But fire wil burst from Heshbon, aflame from the palace of Sihon, consuming the brows of Moab, the head of a turbulent brood. |
46 Vae tibi, Moab! Periit populus Chamos, quia comprehensi sunt filii tui et filiae tuae in captivitatem. | 46 Disaster for you, Moab! The people of Chemosh are lost! For your sons have been taken into exileand your daughters into captivity. |
47 Et convertam sortem Moab in novissimis diebus ”, ait Dominus. Hucusque iudicia Moab. | 47 But I shal bring back Moab's captives in the final days, Yahweh declares. Thus far the judgement onMoab. |
