1 RICORDATI del tuo Creatore ne' giorni di tua giovinezza, prima che arrivi il tempo di afflizione, e si appressino gli anni, de' quali dirai: Anni noiosi!	1 Remember your Creator while you are still young, before the bad days come, before the years comewhich, you wil say, give you no pleasure;
2 Prima che oscuro divenga il sole, e la luce, e la luna, e le stelle, e dietro alla pioggia tornino le nuvole:	2 before the sun and the light grow dim and the moon and stars, before the clouds return after the rain;
3 Allorché tremeranno della casa i custodi, e gli uomini fortissimi vacilleranno, e quelli, che macinavano ridotti a pochi non lavoreranno, e verranno a ottenebrarsi quelli, che veggono pei loro fessi:	3 the time when your watchmen become shaky, when strong men are bent double, when the women,one by one, quit grinding, and, as they look out of the window, find their sight growing dim.
4 E le porte della piazza si chiudono, e la voce di quello, che macina s'impicciolisce, e al cantar d' un uccello l'uomo si leva; e diventan sorde le figlie dei cantici.	4 When the street-door is kept shut, when the sound of grinding fades away, when the first cry of a birdwakes you up, when all the singing has stopped;
5 Egli hanno anche timore de' luoghi elevati, e per le vie sono paurosi; fiorisce il mandorlo, la cavalletta si ingrossa, e il cappero si sperde; perché l'uomo se ne va verso la casa di sua eternità; e lo attornieranno per istrada, què che lo piangono.	5 when going uphil is an ordeal and you are frightened at every step you take- yet the almond tree is inflower and the grasshopper is weighed down and the caper-bush loses its tang; while you are on the way to youreverlasting home and the mourners are assembling in the street;
6 Prima che la funicella d'argento si rompa, e la benda d'oro si corrughi, e si spezzi sulla fonte la brocca, e la ruota sulla cisterna si stritoli;	6 before the silver thread snaps, or the golden bowl is cracked, or the pitcher shattered at the fountain,or the pul ey broken at the wel -head:
7 E torni la polvere nella sua terra, donde ebbe origine, e lo spirito ritorni a Dio, di cui fu dono.	7 the dust returns to the earth from which it came, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.
8 Vanità delle vanità, disse l'Ecclesiaste, e tutto è vanità.	8 Sheer futility, Qoheleth says, everything is futile.
9 L'Ecclesiaste essendo sapientissimo istruì il popolo, e divulgò quello, che aveva fatto, e con molto studio compose molte parabole.	9 Besides being a sage, Qoheleth taught the people what he himself knew, having weighed, studied andemended many proverbs.
10 Cercò le utili dottrine, e scrisse documenti rettissimi, e pieni di verità.	10 Qoheleth took pains to write in an attractive style and by it to convey truths.
11 Le parole de' saggi son come pungoli, e come chiovi, che penetrano profondamente, e ci sono state date mediante la schiera de' maestri dall' unico pastore.	11 The sayings of a sage are like goads, like pegs positioned by shepherds: the same shepherd finds ause for both.
12 Figliuol mio non cercar nulla di più; imperocché i libri si moltiplicano senza fine, e la meditazione continua è travaglio del corpo.	12 Furthermore, my child, you must realise that writing books involves endless hard work, and that muchstudy wearies the body.
13 Ascoltiamo tutti egualmente la fine d'ogni discorso: Temi Dio, e osserva i suoi comandamenti; perocché' questo è tutto l'uomo:	13 To sum up the whole matter: fear God and keep his commandments, for that is the duty of everyone.
14 E ogni cosa, che si faccia, la chiamerà Dio in giudizio per qualunque errore commesso, o sia ella buona, ovver sia ella cattiva.	14 For God wil cal al our deeds to judgement, all that is hidden, be it good or bad.
