1 L'anno cento quarantanove Giuda intese come Antioco Eupatore veniva con gran gente contro i Giudei,	1 In the year one hundred and forty-nine, Judas and his men discovered that Antiochus Eupator wasadvancing in force against Judaea,
2 E con lui Lisia tutore, che aveva il maneggio degli affari, che avea seco cento dieci mila fanti, e cinque mila cavalli, e ventidue elefanti, e cocchi falcati trecento.	2 and with him Lysias his tutor and chief minister; he had moreover a Greek force of one hundred andten thousand infantry, five thousand three hundred cavalry, twenty-two elephants, and three hundred chariotsfitted with scythes.
3 E si mischiò con essi anche Menelao, e con grande artifizio cercava di placare Antioco non perché amasse la salute della patria, ma sulla speranza di esser messo in possesso del principato.	3 Menelaus, too, joined them and very craftily kept urging Antiochus on, not for the welfare of his owncountry but in the hope of being restored to office.
4 Ma il Re de' regi voltò il cuore di Antioco contro quel peccatore, e avendogli Lisia rappresentato come quegli era la causa di tutti i mali, il re comandò, che lo prendessero, e lo facessero morire in quello stesso luogo secondo la loro consuetudine.	4 But the King of kings stirred up the anger of Antiochus against the guilty wretch, and when Lysiasmade it clear to the king that Menelaus was the cause of all the troubles, Antiochus gave orders for him to betaken to Beroea and there put to death by the local method of execution.
5 Era nel luogo stesso una torre di cinquanta cubiti, piena tutta d'una gran massa di cenere: di li vedeasi (solo) il precipizio:	5 In that place there is a tower fifty cubits high, ful of ash, with an internal lip al round overhanging theashes.
6 Ordinò, che di li quel sacrilego fosse gettato nella cenere, dandogli tutti la spinta per farlo perire.	6 If anyone is convicted of sacrilegious theft or of some other heinous crime, he is taken up to the topand pushed over to perish.
7 Con tal legge dovette morire il prevaricator della legge Menelao, senza che fosse seppellito nella terra.	7 In such a manner was the renegade fated to die; Menelaus had not even the privilege of burial.
8 E ciò molto giustamente; perocche avendo egli commessi molti delitti contro l'altare di Dio, il di cui fuoco, o la cenere son cose sante, fu egli condannato a morire nella cenere.	8 Deserved justice, this; since he had committed many sins against the altar, the fire and ashes ofwhich were holy, it was in ashes that he met his death.
9 Ma il re veniva con animo furibondo per farsi conoscere a' Giudei più cattivo del padre suo.	9 The king, then, was advancing, his mind filled with barbarous designs, to give the Jews ademonstration of far worse things than anything that had happened under his father.
10 Le quali cose avendo sapute Giuda ordinò al popolo, che invocasse di e notte il Signore, affinchè come in tutte le altre occasioni, così adesso gli aiutasse:	10 When Judas heard of this, he ordered the people day and night to cal on the Lord as never before,to come to the help of those who were in peril of being deprived of the Law, their fatherland and the holy Temple,
11 Come quelli, che temevano di aver a perdere e la legge, e la patria, è il tempio santo; e non permettesse, che restasse soggetto di nuovo alle bestemmiatrici nazioni quel popolo, che poco prima avea cominciato alcun poco a respirare.	11 and not to al ow the people, just when they were beginning to breathe again, to fall into the power ofil -famed foreigners.
12 E cosi avendo fatto tutti d'accordo, e implorata la misericordia del Signore, con lagrime, e digiuni, prostrati per terra per tre interi giorni, Giuda gli esortò a mettersi all'ordine.	12 When they had al , with one voice, obeyed his instructions and had made their petitions to themerciful Lord, weeping, fasting and prostrating themselves for three days continuously, Judas spoke words ofencouragement and told them to keep close to him.
13 Ed egli col parer de' seniori risolvè di uscire in campagna prima che il re si accostasse coll'esercito alla Giudea, e si rendesse padrone della città; e di rimettere al Signore l'esito dell'affare.	13 After separate consultation with the elders, he resolved not to wait for the king's army to invadeJudaea and take possession of the city, but to march out and settle the whole matter with the Lord's help.
14 Rassegnatosi adunque totalmente alle disposizioni di Dio Creatore dell'Universo, ed esortati i suoi a combattere virilmente, e a difendere sino alla morte le leggi, il tempio, la città, la patria, e i cittadini, si accampò coll'esercito vicino a Modin.	14 Having thus committed the outcome to the Creator of the world, and having exhorted his soldiers tofight bravely to the death for the laws, the Temple, the city, their country and their way of life, he encamped hisarmy near Modein.
15 E dato per segno a' suoi la vittoria di Dio, fatta una scelta della più robusta gioventù, assalì di notte tempo il quartiere del re, e uccise nel campo quattro mila uomini, e il più grande degli elefanti con quelli, che gli stavan sopra:	15 Giving his men the password 'Victory from God', he made a night attack on the king's pavilion with apicked band of the bravest young men. Inside the camp he destroyed about two thousand, and his men cutdown the largest of the elephants with its mahout;
16 E riempiuti di terrore, e di scompiglio gli alloggiamenti, dopo sì felice impresa si ritirarono.	16 having eventual y filled the camp with terror and confusion, they successful y withdrew,
17 E ciò fu fatto al primo spuntare del giorno, assistendoli Dio colla sua protezione.	17 just as dawn was breaking. This was achieved, thanks to the protection which the Lord grantedJudas.
18 Ma il re dopo aver fatto saggio dell'audacia de' Giudei, cercava con arte di impadronirsi de' posti scabrosi:	18 The king, having had a taste of Jewish daring, now tried to capture their positions by trickery.
19 E si accostò coll' esercito a Bethsura, la quale era una fortezza de' Giudei ben munita: ma era rispinto, trovava inciampi, scapitava.	19 He advanced on Beth-Zur, a strong fortress of the Jews, but was checked, overcome and sorepulsed.
20 E Giuda mandava a que' di dentro ciò che lor bisognava.	20 Judas supplied the garrison with what they needed,
21 Ma un certo Rhodoco nell'esercito de' Giudei faceva la spia a' nemici, ma fu cercato, e si trovò, e si messe in prigione.	21 but Rhodocus, of the Jewish army, supplied the enemy with secret information; the man wasidentified, arrested, and dealt with.
22 E il re parlamentò di nuovo con quelli, che erano in Bethsura, e data loro la sua parola, e ricevuta la loro, se n' andò:	22 A second time, the king parleyed with the garrison of Beth-Zur; he offered and accepted pledges offriendship, retired, then attacked Judas and his men, but lost the battle.
23 Venne alle mani con Giuda, e fu vinto. Indi avendo saputo come si era ribellato Filippo lasciato in Antiochia al maneggio degli affari, perdutosi di animo si raccomandò a' Giudei, e si umiliò ad essi, e giurò tutto quello che parve giusto, e fatta la riconciliazione offerse sagrifizio, rendè onore al tempio, e gli fece dei doni:	23 He was then told that Philip, left in charge of affairs, had rebelled in Antioch. He was stunned by this,opened negotiations with the Jews, came to an agreement, and swore to abide by al reasonable conditions.Agreement reached, he offered a sacrifice, honoured the Temple, and made generous gifts to the holy place.
24 Abbracciò Maccabeo, e lo fece governatore, e principe da Tolemaide fino ai Gerreni.	24 He received Maccabaeus kindly and, leaving Hegemonides to exercise command from Ptolemais tothe territory of the Gerrenians,
25 Ma essendo Antioco arrivato a Tolemaide, quei cittadini erano molto malcontenti di quelle convenzioni, e di quella amicizia, con paura, che di dispetto non rompessero la confederazione.	25 went to Ptolemais. The inhabitants of the place disapproved of the treaty; they complained furiouslyand wanted to annul its provisions.
26 Allora Lisia salì sulla tribuna, e avendo renduto conto dell'affare, calmò il popolo, e se ne tornò ad Antiochia. Tal ebbe fine il viaggio, e il ritorno del re.	26 Lysias mounted the rostrum and made a convincing defence of the provisions which convinced andcalmed them and won their goodwil . He then withdrew to Antioch. So much for the episode of the king'soffensive and retreat.
