1 Il re passò quella notte senza prender riposo, e comandò, che se gli portasser le storie, e gli annali del tempo passato: e mentre questi leggevansi in sua presenza,	1 And this was the text of the letter: “Artaxerxes, the great king from India all the way to Ethiopia, to the leaders and generals of the one hundred twenty-seven provinces, which are subject to his authority, greetings.
2 Si venne a quel luogo, dove stava scritto, come Mardocheo avea rivelata al re la congiura di Bagathan, e di Thares eunuchi, che volevano uccidere il re Assuero.	2 Although I have reigned over many nations and subjugated the whole world under my realm, I was by no means willing to abuse the greatness of this power, but to govern my subjects with clemency and leniency, so that they would settle into a quiet life, apart from any terror, and delight in peace, as all mortals would choose to do.
3 Or sentito ciò, disse il re: Qual premio, od onore ha ottenuto Mardocheo per tanta fedeltà? E i servitori, e i cortigiani suoi gli dissero: Ei non ha avuto ricompensa veruna.	3 Yet, in asking my counselors how this might be able to be accomplished, one who excelled the others in wisdom and fidelity, and who was second after the king, named Haman,
4 E il re immediatamente disse: Chi è nell'atrio? Or Aman era entrato nell'atrio interiore della casa reale per suggerire al re, che desse ordine di far appiccar Mardocheo al patibolo già preparato.	4 explained to me that there was a people, scattered throughout the whole world, that used strange laws, and, acting against the customs of all peoples, despised the commandments of kings and violated the harmony of all nations with their dissension.
5 Risposero i servi: Aman è nell'anticamera. E il re disse: Venga.	5 When we had learned this, seeing one nation rebellious against all mankind, having overthrown the usefulness of laws, and going against our orders, and disturbing the peace and harmony of the provinces subject to us,
6 E quand'ei fu entrato, gli disse: Che dee farsi ad un uomo, cui il re vuole onorare? E Aman pensando dentro di se, e credendo, che non altri, che se, volesse il re onorare,	6 we commanded that whomever Haman, who is chief over all the provinces, and second after the king, and whom we honor in the place of a father, whomever he would point out should be destroyed by their enemies, with their wives and children, and that no one may take pity on them, on the fourteenth day of the twelfth month Adar of this present year,
7 Rispose: Un uomo, che il re vuole onorare,	7 so that these guilty men, all on one day, may go down to the underworld, restoring to our empire the peace that they had disturbed.”
8 Dee vestirsi di abito reale, e farsi, salire sopra un cavallo, il quale sia stato e cavalcato dal re, e dee avere in testa il diadema reale,	8 And the effect of the letters was this: that all provinces would know and prepare for the prescribed day.
9 E il primo de' principi reali, e dei signori grandi addestri il suo cavallo, e andando per la piazza della città gridi, e dica: Così sarà onorato colui, che il re vuole onorare.	9 The couriers, who had been sent, hurried to complete the king’s command, but the edict was hung up in Susa immediately. And the king and Haman celebrated a feast, while all the Jews in the city were weeping.
10 E il re gli disse: Va tosto, e prendi il manto reale, e il cavallo, e quello che hai detto, fallo al Giudeo Mardocheo, che siede dinanzi alle porte del palazzo: guarda di non omettere nulla di quello, che hai detto.
11 Aman adunque prese il manto, e il cavallo, e fatto rivestir Mardocheo sulla piazza della città, e fattolo salire a cavallo, gli andava innanzi, e gridava: Di tale onore è degno chiunque vorrà il re, che sia onorato.
12 Indi Mardocheo tornò alla porta del palazzo, e Aman si affrettò di andare a casa sua piangendo, e col capo coperto:
13 E raccontò a Zares sua moglie, ed agli amici tutto quello, che gli era avvenuto. Ma i sapienti, da' quali prendeva consiglio, e la moglie gli risposero: Se Mardocheo, a cui hai principiato a star sotto, è di stirpe Giudea, non potrai contrastare con lui, ma andrai per terra sugli occhi di lui.
14 Mentr'ei parlava tuttora, vennero gli eunuchi del re, e lo obbligarono di andar subito al convito preparato dalla regina.
