1 Partiti quelli, entrò Giuditta nel suo oratorio, e vestita di cilicio sparse di cenere la sua testa, e prostratasi dinanzi al Signore, a lui alzava sue voci dicendo:	1 Judith threw herself down prostrate, with ashes strewn upon her head, and wearing nothing over her sackcloth. While the incense was being offered in the temple of God in Jerusalem that evening, Judith prayed to the Lord with a loud voice:
2 Signore Dio del padre mio Simeon, il quale gli mettesti in mano la spada per punire quegli stranieri, i quali per infame passione violaromo, e maltrattano una vergine facendole vergogna:	2 "Lord, God of my forefather Simeon! You put a sword into his hand to take revenge upon the foreigners who had immodestly loosened the maiden's girdle, shamefully exposed her thighs, and disgracefully violated her body. This they did, though you forbade it.
3 Onde le loro donne divenner preda, e le figliuole loro divennero ancelle, e tutte le loro sostanze furono acquisto de servi tuoi, che arsero di zelo dell'onor tuo; dà (ti prego) aiuto a me vedova, o Signore Dio mio.	3 Therefore you had their rulers slaughtered; and you covered with their blood the bed in which they lay deceived, the same bed that had felt the shame of their own deceiving. You smote the slaves together with their princes, and the princes together with their servants.
4 Perchè da te quelle cose furon fatte in antico, e altre ne ideasti dopo di quelle; e quello fu che tu volesti.	4 Their wives you handed over to plunder, and their daughters to captivity; and all the spoils you divided among your favored sons, who burned with zeal for you, and in their abhorrence of the defilement of their kinswoman, called on you for help.
5 Imperocchè tutte a te sono aperte le vie,e i tuoi giudizj gli hai fondati nella tua providenza.	5 "O God, my God, hear me also, a widow. It is you who were the author of those events and of what preceded and followed them. The present, also, and the future you have planned. Whatever you devise comes into being;
6 Volgi adesso lo sguardo sopra gli alloggiamenti degli Assiri, come una volta ti degnasti di volgerlo sopra gli alloggiamenti degli Egiziani, allorchè armati correvano dietro a tuoi servi confidati nei loro cocchi, e ne lor cavalieri, e nella moltitudine de combattenti.	6 the things you decide on come forward and say, 'Here we are!' All your ways are in readiness, and your judgment is made with foreknowledge.
7 Ma tu gettasti lo sguardo sopra i loro allogiamenti, e furono involti nelle tenebre.	7 "Here are the Assyrians, a vast force, priding themselves on horse and rider, boasting of the power of their infantry, trusting in shield and spear, bow and sling. They do not know that
8 L'abisso arrestò i loro passi, e le acque li ricopersero.	8 " 'You, the Lord, crush warfare; Lord is your name. Shatter their strength in your might, and crush their force in your wrath; for they have resolved to profane your sanctuary, to defile the tent where your glorious name resides, and to overthrow with iron the horns of your altar.
9 Lo stesso sia di costoro, o Signore, i quali confidano nella lor moltitudine, e de' loro cocchi, e delle lance, e degli scudi, e delle frecce, e delle aste si gloriano.	9 See their pride, and send forth your wrath upon their heads. Give me, a widow, the strong hand to execute my plan.
10 Ed essi non hanno, come Dio nostro se tu, il quale fin ab antico struggi gli eserciti, e ti nomi il Signore.	10 With the guile of my lips, smite the slave together with the ruler, the ruler together with his servant; crush their pride by the hand of a woman.
11 Alza il tuo braccio, come già altre volte, e colla tua virtù conquidi la loro possanza vada a terra ai colpi dell'ira tua il poter di costoro; i quali si promettono di violare il tuo Santuario, di contaminare il tabernacolo, che porta il tuo nome, e di recidere colla spada il corno del tuo altare.	11 "Your strength is not in numbers, nor does your power depend upon stalwart men; but you are the God of the lowly, the helper of the oppressed, the supporter of the weak, the protector of the forsaken, the savior of those without hope.
12 Fa, Signore, che la sua propria spada serva a troncare la sua superbia:	12 "Please, please, God of my forefather, God of the heritage of Israel, Lord of heaven and earth, Creator of the waters, King of all you have created, hear my prayer!
13 I suoi occhi sieno il laccio, al quale egli sia preso da me, e tu lo percuoterai colle affettuose parole della mia bocca.	13 Let my guileful speech bring wound and wale on those who have planned dire things against your covenant, your holy temple, Mount Zion, and the homes your children have inherited.
14 Dà al mio spirito fermezza per disprezzarlo, e virtù per abbatterlo.	14 Let your whole nation and all the tribes know clearly that you are the god of all power and might, and that there is no other who protects the people of Israel but you alone."
15 Imperocchè monumento al tuo nome sarà, che lo abbia steso al suolo la mano di una donna.
16 Imperocchè non sta il tuo potere nelle molte schiere, nè ti ti compiaci nelle forze dei cavalieri: e ab antico dispiacquero a te i superbi, ma gradisti mai sempre l'orazione degli umili, e de mansueti.
17 Dio de'cieli, creatore delle acque, e Signore di tutte le creature, esaudisci me miserabile, che a te ricorro, e tutto spero dalla tua misericordia.
18 Ricordati, Signore, della tua alleanza, metti in bocca a me le parole, e fortifica il mio cuore in questa impresa, affinchè la tua casa resti sempre santificata al tuo culto.
19 E le genti tutte conoscano, come Dio se tu, e altro non havvenne fuori di te.
