| 3 Già ti ho raccomandato venendo in Macedonia, di rimanere ad Efeso per far intendere ad alcuni di non insegnare dottrine aliene, | 3 As I urged you when I was going to Macedonia, remain at Ephesus that you may charge certain persons not to teach any different doctrine, |
| 4 e di non andar dietro a miti e genealogie interminabili, le quali dànno luogo a dispute, anzichè promuovere l'opera di Dio che sta nella fede. | 4 nor to occupy themselves with myths and endless genealogies which promote speculations rather than the divine training that is in faith; |
| 5 Ora il fine dell'ammaestramento è l'amore che proviene da un cuore puro, da una coscienza buona e da una fede sincera, | 5 whereas the aim of our charge is love that issues from a pure heart and a good conscience and sincere faith. |
| 6 le quali cose perdendo di mira, alcuni si son sviati a un vano parlottare, | 6 Certain persons by swerving from these have wandered away into vain discussion, |
| 7 pretendendo essere dottori della Legge, mentre non sanno neppure quel che dicono, nè intorno a che cosa mostrano tanta sicumera. | 7 desiring to be teachers of the law, without understanding either what they are saying or the things about which they make assertions. |
| 8 Ora noi sappiamo bene che la Legge è buona se altri se ne serva legittimamente, | 8 Now we know that the law is good, if any one uses it lawfully, |
| 9 nella persuasione che la Legge non è fatta per il giusto, ma per i non giusti e riottosi, per gli empi e i peccatori, per gli scellerati e i profani, per i parricidi e matricidi e omicidi, | 9 understanding this, that the law is not laid down for the just but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, |
| 10 per i fornicatori, per i sodomiti, per i ladri d'uomini, i bugiardi, gli spergiuri, e se altra cosa s'oppone alla sana disciplina, | 10 immoral persons, sodomites, kidnapers, liars, perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound doctrine, |
| 11 conforme al Vangelo di gloria del beato Dio, che fu a me affidato. | 11 in accordance with the glorious gospel of the blessed God with which I have been entrusted. |
| 12 Io rendo grazie al mio datore di forza Cristo Gesù nostro Signore, che mi ha stimato fedele, ponendomi nel suo ministerio, | 12 I thank him who has given me strength for this, Christ Jesus our Lord, because he judged me faithful by appointing me to his service, |
| 13 mentre prima ero bestemmiatore e persecutore violento; ma ottenni misericordia perchè agii per ignoranza nella mia incredulità, | 13 though I formerly blasphemed and persecuted and insulted him; but I received mercy because I had acted ignorantly in unbelief, |
| 14 e la grazia del nostro Signore sovrabbondò, con la fede e con l'amore in Cristo Gesù. | 14 and the grace of our Lord overflowed for me with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. |
| 15 Ecco una parola di fede e degnissima d'ogni accoglimento, questa, che Cristo Gesù venne nel mondo a salvare i peccatori; di cui io sono il primo; | 15 The saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. And I am the foremost of sinners; |
| 16 ma per questo ottenni misericordia perchè in me primo mostrasse Gesù Cristo tutta la sua longanimità, a esempio di chi è per credere a lui per la vita eterna. | 16 but I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience for an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life. |
| 17 Al re dei secoli, immortale, invisibile, unico Dio, onore e gloria per i secoli dei secoli. Amen. | 17 To the King of ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen. |
| 18 Questi avvertimenti ti raccomando, o figlio Timoteo, secondo le predizioni prima fatte su di te; affinchè tu, conforme a quelle, combatta la buona battaglia, | 18 This charge I commit to you, Timothy, my son, in accordance with the prophetic utterances which pointed to you, that inspired by them you may wage the good warfare, |
| 19 mantenendo la fede e la buona coscienza, la quale rigettando, alcuni han fatto naufragio rispetto alla fede. | 19 holding faith and a good conscience. By rejecting conscience, certain persons have made shipwreck of their faith, |
| 20 E son di questo numero Imeneo ed Alessandro, che io ho abbandonato a Satana, perchè imparino a non dir bestemmie. | 20 among them Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have delivered to Satan that they may learn not to blaspheme. |
