1 Anch'io sono un uomo mortale come tutti, discendente del primo essere plasmato di creta. Fui formato di carne nel seno di una madre,	1 I too am mortal like everyone else, a descendant of the first man formed from the earth. I was model edin flesh inside a mother's womb,
2 durante dieci mesi consolidato nel sangue, frutto del seme d'un uomo e del piacere compagno del sonno.	2 where, for ten months, in blood I acquired substance -- the result of virile seed and pleasure, sleep'scompanion.
3 Anch'io appena nato ho respirato l'aria comune e sono caduto su una terra uguale per tutti, levando nel pianto uguale a tutti il mio primo grido.	3 I too, when I was born, drew in the common air, I fel on the same ground that bears us al , and cryingwas the first sound I made, like everyone else.
4 E fui allevato in fasce e circondato di cure;	4 I was nurtured in swaddling clothes, with every care.
5 nessun re iniziò in modo diverso l'esistenza.	5 No king has known any other beginning of existence;
6 Si entra nella vita e se ne esce alla stessa maniera.	6 for there is only one way into life, and one way out of it.
7 Per questo pregai e mi fu elargita la prudenza; implorai e venne in me lo spirito della sapienza.	7 And so I prayed, and understanding was given me; I entreated, and the spirit of Wisdom came to me.
8 La preferii a scettri e a troni, stimai un nulla la ricchezza al suo confronto;	8 I esteemed her more than sceptres and thrones; compared with her, I held riches as nothing.
9 non la paragonai neppure a una gemma inestimabile, perché tutto l'oro al suo confronto è un Po' di sabbia e come fango sarà valutato di fronte ad essa l'argento.	9 I reckoned no precious stone to be her equal, for compared with her, al gold is a pinch of sand, andbeside her, silver ranks as mud.
10 L'amai più della salute e della bellezza, preferii il suo possesso alla stessa luce, perché non tramonta lo splendore che ne promana.	10 I loved her more than health or beauty, preferred her to the light, since her radiance never sleeps.
11 Insieme con essa mi sono venuti tutti i beni; nelle sue mani è una ricchezza incalcolabile.	11 In her company al good things came to me, and at her hands incalculable wealth.
12 Godetti di tutti questi beni, perché la sapienza li guida, ma ignoravo che di tutti essa è madre.	12 All these delighted me, since Wisdom brings them, though I did not then realise that she was theirmother.
13 Senza frode imparai e senza invidia io dono, non nascondo le sue ricchezze.	13 What I learned diligently, I shal pass on liberally, I shal not conceal how rich she is.
14 Essa è un tesoro inesauribile per gli uomini; quanti se lo procurano si attirano l'amicizia di Dio, sono a lui raccomandati per i doni del suo insegnamento	14 For she is to human beings an inexhaustible treasure, and those who acquire this win God'sfriendship, commended to him by the gifts of instruction.
15 Mi conceda Dio di parlare secondo conoscenza e di pensare in modo degno dei doni ricevuti, perché egli è guida della sapienza e i saggi ricevono da lui orientamento.	15 May God grant me to speak as he would wish and conceive thoughts worthy of the gifts I havereceived, since he is both guide to Wisdom and director of sages;
16 In suo potere siamo noi e le nostre parole, ogni intelligenza e ogni nostra abilità.	16 for we are in his hand, yes, ourselves and our sayings, and al intellectual and al practical knowledge.
17 Egli mi ha concesso la conoscenza infallibile delle cose, per comprender la struttura del mondo e la forza degli elementi,	17 He it was who gave me sure knowledge of what exists, to understand the structure of the world andthe action of the elements,
18 il principio, la fine e il mezzo dei tempi, l'alternarsi dei solstizi e il susseguirsi delle stagioni,	18 the beginning, end and middle of the times, the alternation of the solstices and the succession of theseasons,
19 il ciclo degli anni e la posizione degli astri,	19 the cycles of the year and the position of the stars,
20 la natura degli animali e l'istinto delle fiere, i poteri degli spiriti e i ragionamenti degli uomini, la varietà delle piante e le proprietà delle radici.	20 the natures of animals and the instincts of wild beasts, the powers of spirits and human mentalprocesses, the varieties of plants and the medical properties of roots.
21 Tutto ciò che è nascosto e ciò che è palese io lo so, poiché mi ha istruito la sapienza, artefice di tutte le cose.	21 And now I understand everything, hidden or visible, for Wisdom, the designer of all things, hasinstructed me.
22 In essa c'è uno spirito intelligente, santo, unico, molteplice, sottile, mobile, penetrante, senza macchia, terso, inoffensivo, amante del bene, acuto,	22 For within her is a spirit intel igent, holy, unique, manifold, subtle, mobile, incisive, unsul ied, lucid,invulnerable, benevolent, shrewd,
23 libero, benefico, amico dell'uomo, stabile, sicuro, senz'affanni, onnipotente, onniveggente e che pervade tutti gli spiriti intelligenti, puri, sottilissimi.	23 irresistible, beneficent, friendly to human beings, steadfast, dependable, unperturbed, almighty, al -surveying, penetrating al intel igent, pure and most subtle spirits.
24 La sapienza è il più agile di tutti i moti; per la sua purezza si diffonde e penetra in ogni cosa.	24 For Wisdom is quicker to move than any motion; she is so pure, she pervades and permeates allthings.
25 È un'emanazione della potenza di Dio, un effluvio genuino della gloria dell'Onnipotente, per questo nulla di contaminato in essa s'infiltra.	25 She is a breath of the power of God, pure emanation of the glory of the Almighty; so nothing impurecan find its way into her.
26 È un riflesso della luce perenne, uno specchio senza macchia dell'attività di Dio e un'immagine della sua bontà.	26 For she is a reflection of the eternal light, untarnished mirror of God's active power, and image of hisgoodness.
27 Sebbene unica, essa può tutto; pur rimanendo in se stessa, tutto rinnova e attraverso le età entrando nelle anime sante, forma amici di Dio e profeti.	27 Although she is alone, she can do everything; herself unchanging, she renews the world, and,generation after generation, passing into holy souls, she makes them into God's friends and prophets;
28 Nulla infatti Dio ama se non chi vive con la sapienza.	28 for God loves only those who dwel with Wisdom.
29 Essa in realtà è più bella del sole e supera ogni costellazione di astri; paragonata alla luce, risulta superiore;	29 She is indeed more splendid than the sun, she outshines al the constel ations; compared with light,she takes first place,
30 a questa, infatti, succede la notte, ma contro la sapienza la malvagità non può prevalere.	30 for light must yield to night, but against Wisdom evil cannot prevail.
