1 Ascoltate, o re, e cercate di comprendere; imparate, governanti di tutta la terra.	1 Listen then, kings, and understand; rulers of remotest lands, take warning;
2 Porgete l'orecchio, voi che dominate le moltitudini e siete orgogliosi per il gran numero dei vostri popoli.	2 hear this, you who govern great populations, taking pride in your hosts of subject nations!
3 La vostra sovranità proviene dal Signore; la vostra potenza dall'Altissimo, il quale esaminerà le vostre opere e scruterà i vostri propositi;	3 For sovereignty is given to you by the Lord and power by the Most High, who will himself probe youracts and scrutinise your intentions.
4 poiché, pur essendo ministri del suo regno, non avete governato rettamente, né avete osservato la legge né vi siete comportati secondo il volere di Dio.	4 If therefore, as servants of his kingdom, you have not ruled justly nor observed the law, nor fol owed thewil of God,
5 Con terrore e rapidamente egli si ergerà contro di voi poiché un giudizio severo si compie contro coloro che stanno in alto.	5 he wil fal on you swiftly and terribly. On the highly placed a ruthless judgement falls;
6 L'inferiore è meritevole di pietà, ma i potenti saranno esaminati con rigore.	6 the lowly are pardoned, out of pity, but the mighty wil be mightily tormented.
7 Il Signore di tutti non si ritira davanti a nessuno, non ha soggezione della grandezza, perché egli ha creato il piccolo e il grande e si cura ugualmente di tutti.	7 For the Lord of al does not cower before anyone, he does not stand in awe of greatness, since hehimself has made small and great and provides for al alike;
8 Ma sui potenti sovrasta un'indagine rigorosa.	8 but a searching trial awaits those who wield power.
9 Pertanto a voi, o sovrani, sono dirette le mie parole, perché impariate la sapienza e non abbiate a cadere.	9 So, monarchs, my words are meant for you, so that you may learn wisdom and not fal into error;
10 Chi custodisce santamente le cose sante sarà santificato e chi si è istruito in esse vi troverà una difesa.	10 for those who in holiness observe holy things will be adjudged holy, and, accepting instruction fromthem, wil find their defence in them.
11 Desiderate, pertanto, le mie parole; bramatele e ne riceverete istruzione.	11 Set your heart, therefore, on what I have to say, listen with a wil , and you wil be instructed.
12 La sapienza è radiosa e indefettibile, facilmente è contemplata da chi l'ama e trovata da chiunque la ricerca.	12 Wisdom is bril iant, she never fades. By those who love her, she is readily seen, by those who seekher, she is readily found.
13 Previene, per farsi conoscere, quanti la desiderano.	13 She anticipates those who desire her by making herself known first.
14 Chi si leva per essa di buon mattino non faticherà, la troverà seduta alla sua porta.	14 Whoever gets up early to seek her will have no trouble but wil find her sitting at the door.
15 Riflettere su di essa è perfezione di saggezza, chi veglia per lei sarà presto senza affanni.	15 Meditating on her is understanding in its perfect form, and anyone keeping awake for her will soon befree from care.
16 Essa medesima va in cerca di quanti sono degni di lei, appare loro ben disposta per le strade, va loro incontro con ogni benevolenza.	16 For she herself searches everywhere for those who are worthy of her, benevolently appearing to them on their ways, anticipating their every thought.
17 Suo principio assai sincero è il desiderio d'istruzione; la cura dell'istruzione è amore;	17 For Wisdom begins with the sincere desire for instruction, care for instruction means loving her,
18 l'amore è osservanza delle sue leggi; il rispetto delle leggi è garanzia di immortalità	18 loving her means keeping her laws, attention to her laws guarantees incorruptibility,
19 e l'immortalità fa stare vicino a Dio.	19 and incorruptibility brings us near to God;
20 Dunque il desiderio della sapienza conduce al regno.	20 the desire for Wisdom thus leads to sovereignty.
21 Se dunque, sovrani dei popoli, vi dilettate di troni e di scettri, onorate la sapienza, perché possiate regnare sempre.	21 If then thrones and sceptres delight you, monarchs of the nations, honour Wisdom, so that you mayreign for ever.
22 Esporrò che cos'è la sapienza e come essa nacque; non vi terrò nascosti i suoi segreti. Seguirò le sue tracce fin dall'origine, metterò in luce la sua conoscenza, non mi allontanerò dalla verità.	22 What Wisdom is and how she was born, I shal now explain; I shal hide no mysteries from you, butshall fol ow her steps from the outset of her origin, setting out what we know of her in ful light, without departingfrom the truth.
23 Non mi accompagnerò con l'invidia che consuma, poiché essa non ha nulla in comune con la sapienza.	23 Blighting envy is no companion for me, for envy has nothing in common with Wisdom.
24 L'abbondanza dei saggi è la salvezza del mondo; un re saggio è la salvezza di un popolo.	24 In the greatest number of the wise lies the world's salvation, in a sagacious king the stability of apeople.
25 Lasciatevi dunque ammaestrare dalle mie parole e ne trarrete profitto.	25 Learn, therefore, from my words; the gain will be yours.
