BIBBIA CEI 1974	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Non invidiare gli uomini malvagi, non desiderare di stare con loro;	1 Do not be envious of the wicked or wish for their company,
2 poiché il loro cuore trama rovine e le loro labbra non esprimono che malanni.	2 for their hearts are scheming violence, their lips talking mischief.
3 Con la sapienza si costruisce la casa e con la prudenza la si rende salda;	3 By wisdom a house is built, by understanding it is made strong;
4 con la scienza si riempiono le sue stanze di tutti i beni preziosi e deliziosi.	4 by knowledge its storerooms are fil ed with riches of every kind, rare and desirable.
5 Un uomo saggio vale più di uno forte, un uomo sapiente più di uno pieno di vigore,	5 The wise is mighty in power, strength is reinforced by science;
6 perché con le decisioni prudenti si fa la guerra e la vittoria sta nel numero dei consiglieri.	6 for it is by strategy that you wage war, and victory depends on having many counsellors.
7 È troppo alta la sapienza per lo stolto, alla porta della città egli non potrà aprir bocca.	7 For a fool wisdom is an inaccessible fortress: at the city gate he does not open his mouth.
8 Chi trama per fare il male si chiama mestatore.	8 Anyone intent on evil-doing is known as a master in cunning.
9 Il proposito dello stolto è il peccato e lo spavaldo è l'abominio degli uomini.	9 Folly dreams of nothing but sin, the mocker is abhorrent.
10 Se ti avvilisci nel giorno della sventura, ben poca è la tua forza.	10 If you lose heart when things go wrong, your strength is not worth much.
11 Libera quelli che sono condotti alla morte e salva quelli che sono trascinati al supplizio.	11 Save those being dragged towards death, but can you rescue those on their way to execution?
12 Se dici: "Ecco, io non ne so nulla", forse colui che pesa i cuori non lo comprende? Colui che veglia sulla tua vita lo sa; egli renderà a ciascuno secondo le sue opere.	12 If you say, 'But look, we did not know,' wil the Weigher of the heart pay no attention? Wil not theGuardian of your soul be aware and repay you as your deeds deserve?
13 Mangia, figlio mio, il miele, perché è buono e dolce sarà il favo al tuo palato.	13 Eat honey, my child, since it is good; honey that drips from the comb is sweet to the taste:
14 Sappi che tale è la sapienza per te: se l'acquisti, avrai un avvenire e la tua speranza non sarà stroncata.	14 and so, for sure, wil wisdom be to your soul: find it and you will have a future and your hope wil notbe cut short.
15 Non insidiare, o malvagio, la dimora del giusto, non distruggere la sua abitazione,	15 Do not lurk, wicked man, round the upright man's dwel ing, do not despoil his house.
16 perché se il giusto cade sette volte, egli si rialza, ma gli empi soccombono nella sventura.	16 For though the upright fal s seven times, he gets up again; the wicked are the ones who stumble inadversity.
17 Non ti rallegrare per la caduta del tuo nemico e non gioisca il tuo cuore, quando egli soccombe,	17 Should your enemy fal , do not rejoice, when he stumbles do not let your heart exult:
18 perché il Signore non veda e se ne dispiaccia e allontani da lui la collera.	18 for fear that Yahweh wil be displeased at the sight and turn his anger away from him.
19 Non irritarti per i malvagi e non invidiare gli empi,	19 Do not be indignant about the wicked, do not be envious of the evil,
20 perché non ci sarà avvenire per il malvagio e la lucerna degli empi si estinguerà.	20 for there is no future for the evil, the lamp of the wicked wil go out.
21 Temi il Signore, figlio mio, e il re; non ribellarti né all'uno né all'altro,	21 Fear Yahweh, my child, and fear the king; do not al y yourself with innovators;
22 perché improvvisa sorgerà la loro vendetta e chi sa quale scempio faranno l'uno e l'altro?	22 for suddenly disaster wil loom for them, and who knows what ruin wil seize them and their friends?
23 Anche queste sono parole dei saggi. Aver preferenze personali in giudizio non è bene.	23 The fol owing are also taken from the sages: To show partiality in judgement is not good.
24 Se uno dice all'empio: "Tu sei innocente", i popoli lo malediranno, le genti lo esecreranno,	24 Whoever tells the wicked, 'You are upright,' peoples curse him, nations revile him;
25 mentre tutto andrà bene a coloro che rendono giustizia, su di loro si riverserà la benedizione.	25 but those who correct him, come out of it wel , on them will come a happy blessing.
26 Dà un bacio sulle labbra colui che risponde con parole rette.	26 Whoever returns an honest answer, plants a kiss on the lips.
27 Sistema i tuoi affari di fuori e fatti i lavori dei campi e poi costruisciti la casa.	27 Plan what you want on the open ground, make your preparation in the field; then go and build yourhouse.
28 Non testimoniare alla leggera contro il tuo prossimo e non ingannare con le labbra.	28 Do not bear witness lightly against your neighbour, nor deceive with your lips.
29 Non dire: "Come ha fatto a me così io farò a lui, renderò a ciascuno come si merita".	29 Do not say, 'I wil treat my neighbour as my neighbour treated me; I will repay everyone what eachhas earned.'
30 Sono passato vicino al campo di un pigro, alla vigna di un uomo insensato:	30 By the idler's field I was passing, by the vineyard of a man who had no sense,
31 ecco, ovunque erano cresciute le erbacce, il terreno era coperto di cardi e il recinto di pietre era in rovina.	31 there it al lay, deep in thorns, entirely overgrown with weeds, and its stone wal broken down.
32 Osservando, riflettevo e, vedendo, ho tratto questa lezione:	32 And as I gazed I pondered, I drew this lesson from the sight,
33 un po' dormire, un po' sonnecchiare, un po' incrociare le braccia per riposare	33 'A little sleep, a little drowsiness, a little folding of the arms to lie back
34 e intanto viene passeggiando la miseria e l'indigenza come un accattone.	34 and poverty comes like a vagrant, and, like a beggar, dearth.'
