Paolo — servo di Dio, apostolo di Gesù Cristo per la fede degli eletti di Dio e la conoscenza della verità, che è la base della pietà,1 Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to further the faith of God's elect and their knowledge of the truth which accords with godliness,
per l’attesa della vita eterna, che quel Dio che non mentisce proclamò da prima dell’inizio dei secoli2 in hope of eternal life which God, who never lies, promised ages ago
e manifestò poi al tempo prefissato come sua parola, per mezzo della predicazione, che fu affidata a me secondo il comando del Dio che ci salva —3 and at the proper time manifested in his word through the preaching with which I have been entrusted by command of God our Savior; To Titus, my true child in a common faith: Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior.
This is why I left you in Crete, that you might amend what was defective, and appoint elders in every town as I directed you,
cioè gente irreprensibile, che abbia sposato una donna sola, che abbia figli credenti, non conosciuti come traviati o turbolenti.6 if any man is blameless, the husband of one wife, and his children are believers and not open to the charge of being profligate or insubordinate.
Poiché bisogna che l’ispettore sia irreprensibile, come conviene a un amministratore della casa di Dio, non arrogante, rabbioso, ubriacone, non manesco, né bassamente interessato,7 For a bishop, as God's steward, must be blameless; he must not be arrogant or quick-tempered or a drunkard or violent or greedy for gain,
ma ospitale, amico dei buoni, prudente, giusto, pio moderato,8 but hospitable, a lover of goodness, master of himself, upright, holy, and self-controlled;
tenacemente attaccato a quella dottrina attendibile, che è conforme all’insegnamento avuto, in modo da essere capace di esortare con i sani principi e di confutare i contraddittori,9 he must hold firm to the sure word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to confute those who contradict it.
Perché, specialmente tra i circoncisi, vi sono molti turbolenti, linguacce, imbroglioni:10 For there are many insubordinate men, empty talkers and deceivers, especially the circumcision party;
bisogna turare la bocca a costoro, che mettono a soqquadro intere famiglie, diffondendo idee sbagliate, per i loro sporchi interessi.11 they must be silenced, since they are upsetting whole families by teaching for base gain what they have no right to teach.
Uno dei loro, proprio un loro profeta, ha detto: «Cretesi sempre bugiardi, bestie grame, ghiottoni pigri».12 One of themselves, a prophet of their own, said, "Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons."
Questa dichiarazione è proprio vera. Per questo motivo riprendili severamente, affinché si mantengano sani nella fede13 This testimony is true. Therefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith,
e non diano retta alle fandonie giudaiche e alle ingiunzioni di coloro che voltano le spalle alla verità.14 instead of giving heed to Jewish myths or to commands of men who reject the truth.
Tutto è puro per i puri; per gli immondi e per gli increduli nulla è puro, essendo immonda in loro l’intelligenza e la coscienza.15 To the pure all things are pure, but to the corrupt and unbelieving nothing is pure; their very minds and consciences are corrupted.
Protestano di conoscere Dio, ma a fatti lo rinnegano, abbominevoli quali sono, disobbedienti e incapaci di qualsiasi opera buona.16 They profess to know God, but they deny him by their deeds; they are detestable, disobedient, unfit for any good deed.
