| 1 In possesso dunque di queste promesse, o diletti, purifichiamoci da ogni bruttura della carne e dello spirito, compiendo l’opera della nostra santificazione nel timore di Dio. | 1 Therefore, having these promises, most beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all defilement of the flesh and of the spirit, perfecting sanctification in the fear of God. |
| 2 Fateci largo nei vostri cuori! Noi non abbiamo fatto torto a nessuno; nessuno abbiamo rovinato; non abbiamo frodato nessuno. | 2 Consider us. We have injured no one; we have corrupted no one; we have defrauded no one. |
| 3 Non parlo così per condannarvi, poiché vi ho già detto che siete nei” nostri cuori, dimodochè siete uniti insieme con noi nella morte e nella vita. | 3 I am not saying this to your condemnation. For we have told you before that you are in our hearts: to die together and to live together. |
| 4 Io ho grande fiducia in voi; sono molto fiero di voi. Son pieno di consolazione, mi sento traboccare di gioia in ogni nostra tribolazione. | 4 Great is my confidence in you. Great is my glorying over you. I have been filled with consolation. I have a superabundant joy throughout all our tribulation. |
| 5 Infatti, quando giungemmo in Macedonia, la nostra carne non ebbe requie di sorta. Eravamo anzi tribolati per ogni verso: da lotte all’esterno, da timori nell’intimo. | 5 Then, too, when we had arrived in Macedonia, our flesh had no rest. Instead, we suffered every tribulation: exterior conflicts, interior fears. |
| 6 Ma Iddio, che infonde coraggio ai miseri, ci consolò mediante l’arrivo di Tito; | 6 But God, who consoles the humble, consoled us by the arrival of Titus, |
| 7 e non solo mediante il suo arrivo, ma anche per il gaudio che egli aveva provato nei vostri riguardi, perché ci informò del vostro ardente desiderio, della vostra afflizione, del vostro attaccamento per me, sicchè io me ne rallegrai maggiormente. | 7 and not only by his arrival, but also by the consolation with which he was consoled among you. For he brought to us your desire, your weeping, your zeal for me, so that I rejoiced all the more. |
| 8 Poiché, se anche vi rattristai con la mia lettera, non me ne rincresce; e se allora ne ero spiacente — infatti. vedo bene che quella lettera, sia pure per breve tempo, vi rattristò — ora me ne rallegro, | 8 For though I made you sorrowful by my epistle, I do not repent. And if I did repent, but only for a time, having realized that the same epistle made you sorrowful, |
| 9 non già perché ne foste rattristati, ma perché quella vostra pena vi ha condotti al pentimento. Vi siete infatti rattristati secondo i disegni di Dio, di modo che nessun danno avete ricevuto dalla nostra azione. | 9 now I am glad: not because you were sorrowful, but because you were sorrowful unto repentance. For you became sorrowful for God, so that you might not suffer any harm from us. |
| 10 Poiché la tristezza conforme ai voleri di Dio produce un pentimento a salvezza, di cui non ci si rammarica; mentre la tristezza del mondo produce la morte. | 10 For the sorrow that is according to God accomplishes a repentance which is steadfast unto salvation. But the sorrow that is of the world accomplishes death. |
| 11 Ed ecco quanta sollecitudine ha prodotto in voi proprio questa tristezza secondo i disegni di Dio, da voi provata! Anzi, che dico? quanta cura di scolparvi, quanto. sdegno, quanto timore, quale desiderio ardente, quale zelo, quale punizione! Avete mostrato in tutti i modi che in questa faccenda eravate innocenti. | 11 So consider this same idea, being sorrowful according to God, and what great solicitude it accomplishes in you: including protection, and indignation, and fear, and desire, and zeal, and vindication. In all things, you have shown yourselves to be uncorrupted by this sorrow. |
| 12 Perciò, anche se vi scrissi, non lo feci né a motivo dell’offensore né a motivo dell’offeso, ma perché l’attaccamento che avete per noi diventasse a voi palese dinanzi a Dio. | 12 And so, though I wrote to you, it was not because of him who caused the injury, nor because of him who suffered from it, but so as to manifest our solicitude, which we have for you before God. |
| 13 Ecco che cosa ci ha consolati. Ma oltre a questa consolazione personale, abbiamo provato una contentezza ancora più grande per la gioia di Tito, il cui animo è stato da voi tanto confortato. | 13 Therefore, we have been consoled. But in our consolation, we have rejoiced even more abundantly over the joy of Titus, because his spirit was refreshed by all of you. |
| 14 Se con lui mi sono un po’ gloriato di voi, non ne dovetti poi arrossire; ma come in ogni cosa vi abbiamo parlato con verità così l’orgoglio di voi mostrato da noi a Tito risultò verità. | 14 And if I have gloried in anything to him about you, I have not been put to shame. But, just as we have spoken all things to you in truth, so also our glorying before Titus has been the truth. |
| 15 Il suo cuore è ancor più largamente ben disposto verso di voi ora che ricorda l’obbedienza prestata da voi tutti e il religioso rispetto e il timore riverente con cui l’accoglieste. | 15 And his feelings are now more abundant toward you, since he remembers the obedience of you all, and how you received him with fear and trembling. |
| 16 Mi rallegro di poter in tutto contare su di voi. | 16 I rejoice that in all things I have confidence in you. |
