1 Detto questo, Gesù se ne andò con i suoi discepoli oltre il torrente del Cedron, dove era un giardino nel quale entrò con i suoi discepoli.	1 When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples across the Kidron valley, where there was a garden, which he and his disciples entered.
2 Anche Giuda, il traditore, conosceva il luogo, perché Gesù e i suoi discepoli vi si erano spesso riuniti.	2 Now Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place; for Jesus often met there with his disciples.
3 Giuda, dunque, conducendo la coorte e guardie fornite dai gran sacerdoti e dai farisei, arriva la con lanterne, torce e armi.	3 So Judas, procuring a band of soldiers and some officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, went there with lanterns and torches and weapons.
4 Allora Gesù, che sapeva tutto ciò che stava per accadergli, si avanzò e disse loro: «Chi cercate?»	4 Then Jesus, knowing all that was to befall him, came forward and said to them, "Whom do you seek?"
5 Gli risposero: «Gesù il Nazareno». Dice loro Gesù: «Sono io!» Anche Giuda, il traditore, stava con loro.	5 They answered him, "Jesus of Nazareth." Jesus said to them, "I am he." Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with them.
6 Come, dunque, ebbe detto loro: «Sono io», indietreggiarono e caddero in terra.	6 When he said to them, "I am he," they drew back and fell to the ground.
7 Di nuovo egli domandò: «Chi cercate?» Essi dissero: «Gesù il Nazareno».	7 Again he asked them, "Whom do you seek?" And they said, "Jesus of Nazareth."
8 Rispose Gesù: «Vi ho detto che sono io! Se dunque cercate me, lasciate che costoro se ne vadano».	8 Jesus answered, "I told you that I am he; so, if you seek me, let these men go."
9 Così si adempiva la parola da lui detta: «Di coloro che mi hai dato, non ho perduto nessuno».	9 This was to fulfill the word which he had spoken, "Of those whom thou gavest me I lost not one."
10 Allora Simon Pietro, che aveva una spada, la sguainò e colpì il servo del sommo sacerdote mozzandogli l’orecchio destro. Il servo si chiamava Malco.	10 Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's slave and cut off his right ear. The slave's name was Malchus.
11 Gesù disse a Pietro: «Rimetti la spada nel fodero. Non berrò il calice che il Padre mi ha dato?» Gesù dinanzi ad Anna e	11 Jesus said to Peter, "Put your sword into its sheath; shall I not drink the cup which the Father has given me?"
12 Allora la coorte, il tribuno e le guardie dei Giudei si impadronirono di Gesù, lo legarono	12 So the band of soldiers and their captain and the officers of the Jews seized Jesus and bound him.
13 e lo condussero prima presso Anna, poiché costui era suocero di Caifa, il quale era sommo sacerdote in quell’anno.	13 First they led him to Annas; for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year.
14 Caifa era quello che aveva consigliato ai Giudei: «Conviene che un sol uomo	14 It was Caiaphas who had given counsel to the Jews that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.
15 muoia per il popolo». Seguivano Gesù Simon Pietro e un altro discepolo. Ora quel discepolo, che era conosciuto dal sommo sacerdote, entrò con Gesù nel cortile del sommo sacerdote;	15 Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. As this disciple was known to the high priest, he entered the court of the high priest along with Jesus,
16 Pietro, invece, rimase fuori, alla porta. Uscì dunque, l’altro discepolo che era conosciuto dal sommo sacerdote, parlò alla portinaia e fece entrare Pietro.	16 while Peter stood outside at the door. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the maid who kept the door, and brought Peter in.
17 La serva portinaia disse a Pietro: «Non saresti anche tu dei discepoli di quest'uomo?» Egli rispose: «Non lo sono».	17 The maid who kept the door said to Peter, "Are not you also one of this man's disciples?" He said, "I am not."
18 I servi e le guardie, che avevano acceso un braciere perché faceva freddo, stavano a scaldarsi. Anche Pietro stava a scaldarsi con loro.	18 Now the servants and officers had made a charcoal fire, because it was cold, and they were standing and warming themselves; Peter also was with them, standing and warming himself.
19 Il sommo sacerdote interrogò Gesù intorno ai suoi discepoli e al suo insegnamento.	19 The high priest then questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.
20 Gesù gli rispose: «Io ho parlato al mondo apertamente; ho sempre insegnato in sinagoga e nel tempio, dove tutti i Giudei si riuniscono, e non ho detto nulla in segreto.	20 Jesus answered him, "I have spoken openly to the world; I have always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where all Jews come together; I have said nothing secretly.
21 Perché interroghi me? Domanda, a coloro che hanno udito, che cosa ho detto loro; ecco, essi sanno ciò che ho detto».	21 Why do you ask me? Ask those who have heard me, what I said to them; they know what I said."
22 A queste parole, una delle guardie presenti diede uno schiaffo a Gesù dicendo: «Così rispondi al sommo sacerdote?»	22 When he had said this, one of the officers standing by struck Jesus with his hand, saying, "Is that how you answer the high priest?"
23 Gesù gli rispose: «Se ho parlato male, mostrami dov'è il male; ma se ho parlato bene, perché mi percuoti ?»	23 Jesus answered him, "If I have spoken wrongly, bear witness to the wrong; but if I have spoken rightly, why do you strike me?"
24 Anna allora lo mandò, legato, dal sommo sacerdote Caifa.	24 Annas then sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.
25 Ora, Simon Pietro era là, a scaldarsi. Gli dissero: «Non saresti anche tu dei suoi discepoli?» Egli negò e rispose: «Non lo sono».	25 Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. They said to him, "Are not you also one of his disciples?" He denied it and said, "I am not."
26 Uno dei servi del sommo sacerdote, parente di colui al quale Pietro aveva mozzato l’orecchio, gli disse: «Non ti ho visto io, nel giardino, con lui?»	26 One of the servants of the high priest, a kinsman of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, "Did I not see you in the garden with him?"
27 Di nuovo Pietro negò, e subito un gallo cantò.	27 Peter again denied it; and at once the cock crowed.
28 Conducono, allora, Gesù dalla casa di Caifa nel pretorio. Era il mattino. Essi, però, non entrarono nel pretorio per non contaminarsi e poter mangiare la pasqua.	28 Then they led Jesus from the house of Caiaphas to the praetorium. It was early. They themselves did not enter the praetorium, so that they might not be defiled, but might eat the passover.
29 Pilato, dunque, uscì fuori verso di loro e disse: «Quale accusa portate contro quest'uomo?»	29 So Pilate went out to them and said, "What accusation do you bring against this man?"
30 Essi gli risposero: «Se costui non fosse un malfattore non te lo avremmo consegnato».	30 They answered him, "If this man were not an evildoer, we would not have handed him over."
31 Allora Pilato disse loro: «Prendetelo voi e giudicatelo secondo la vostra legge!» Gli risposero i Giudei: «A noi non è permesso uccidere alcuno».	31 Pilate said to them, "Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law." The Jews said to him, "It is not lawful for us to put any man to death."
32 Così si adempiva la parola di Gesù, con la quale significava di quale morte doveva morire.	32 This was to fulfill the word which Jesus had spoken to show by what death he was to die.
33 Pilato, dunque, entrò di nuovo nel pretorio, chiamò Gesù e gli disse: «Tu sei il re dei Giudei?»	33 Pilate entered the praetorium again and called Jesus, and said to him, "Are you the King of the Jews?"
34 Gesù rispose: «Dici questo da te stesso oppure altri te lo dissero di me?»	34 Jesus answered, "Do you say this of your own accord, or did others say it to you about me?"
35 Rispose Pilato: «E che sono giudeo, io? La tua gente e i gran sacerdoti ti consegnarono a me! Che hai fatto?»	35 Pilate answered, "Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have handed you over to me; what have you done?"
36 Gesù rispose: «Il mio regno non è di questo mondo. Se il mio regno fosse di questo mondo, le mie guardie avrebbero combattuto perché io non fossi consegnato ai Giudei; ma no, il mio regno non è di questo mondo».	36 Jesus answered, "My kingship is not of this world; if my kingship were of this world, my servants would fight, that I might not be handed over to the Jews; but my kingship is not from the world."
37 Gli disse, allora, Pilato: «Dunque re sei, tu?» Rispose Gesù: «Tu lo dici: io sono re. Io per questo son nato, e per questo son venuto nel mondo: per dar testimonianza alla verità. Chiunque è per la verità ascolta la mia voce».	37 Pilate said to him, "So you are a king?" Jesus answered, "You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I have come into the world, to bear witness to the truth. Every one who is of the truth hears my voice."
38 Gli dice Pilato: «Che cosa è la verità?» E detto questo, uscì di nuovo verso i Giudei e disse loro: «Io non trovo in lui nessun motivo di condanna.	38 Pilate said to him, "What is truth?" After he had said this, he went out to the Jews again, and told them, "I find no crime in him.
39 Ma è per voi consuetudine che io vi rilasci qualcuno in occasione della Pasqua. Volete che vi rilasci il re dei Giudei?»	39 But you have a custom that I should release one man for you at the Passover; will you have me release for you the King of the Jews?"
40 Allora si misero a gridare di nuovo: «Non costui, ma Barabba!» Barabba era un brigante.	40 They cried out again, "Not this man, but Barabbas!" Now Barabbas was a robber.
