| 1 Al termine di questi fatti, i capi si accostarono a me e dissero: « Il popolo di Israele, i sacerdoti, i Leviti non si sono separati, a causa dei loro abomini, dai popoli dei paesi, cioè dai Cananei, dagli Hittiti, dai Ferezei, dai Gebusej, dagli Ammoniti, dai Moabiti, dagli Egiziani è dagli Amorrei. | 1 Once this was done, the officials approached me to say, 'The people of Israel, the priests and theLevites, have not renounced the disgusting practices of the people of the country -- the Canaanites, the Hittites,the Perizzites, the Jebusites, the Moabites, the Egyptians and the Amorites- |
| 2 Essi infatti e i loro figli hanno sposato le figlie di quelli e la stirpe santa è stata mescolata con i popoli dei paesi. E la mano dei capi e dei magistrati fu la prima in questa azione cattiva! ». | 2 since they and their sons have married some of their women, as a result of which the holy race hasbeen contaminated by the people of the country. The officials and leaders have been the worst offenders in thisact of infidelity.' |
| 3 Appena udii tale cosa, mi stracciai la veste e il mantello, mi strappai i capelli della testa e la barba e sedetti desolato. | 3 On hearing this, I tore my clothes and my cloak; I pul ed hair from my head and beard and sat down inhorror. |
| 4 Allora si radunarono presso di me quanti temevano le parole del Dio di Israele, per la cattiva azione, a causa della ribellione dei deportati, ma io rimasi a sedere desolato fino all’offerta della sera. | 4 Al who trembled at the words of the God of Israel gathered round me, when faced with the infidelity ofthe exiles, while I went on sitting there in horror until the evening sacrifice. |
| 5 Al momento dell’oblazione della sera, mi ripresi dall’abbattimento e mi inginocchiai con la veste e il mantello stracciati; poi, stesi le palme verso Jahve mio Dio | 5 At the evening sacrifice I came out of my stupor and, falling on my knees in my torn clothes and cloak,stretched out my hands to Yahweh my God, |
| 6 ed esclamai: « Mio Dio, sono pieno di confusione e di vergogna per sollevare lo sguardo verso di te, perchè le nostre iniquità sono cresciute fino sopra il capo e la nostra colpa raggiunge il cielo! | 6 and said: 'My God, I am ashamed, I blush to lift my face to you, my God. For our iniquities haveincreased, until they are higher than our heads, and our guilt has risen as high as heaven. |
| 7 Dal tempo dei nostri padri fino a oggi noi siamo in una grande iniquità; per le nostre malvagità noi, i nostri re e i nostri sacerdoti siamo stati messi in potere dei re dei paesi, in preda alla spada, alla deportazione al saccheggio e alla confusione del volto come oggi. | 7 From the days of our ancestors until now we have been deeply guilty and, because of our iniquities, we,our kings and our priests, have been handed over to the kings of other countries, to the sword, to captivity, topil age, to shame, as is the case today. |
| 8 Tuttavia, per un breve periodo di tempo, la misericordia è venuta da parte di Jahve nostro Dio iper far restare a noi dei superstiti e per concedere a noi un punto d’appoggio nel suo santo luogo, affinchè il nostro Dio ci illumini gli occhi e ci conceda un po’ di vita nella nostra schiavitù. | 8 And now, for a brief moment, the favour of Yahweh our God has allowed a remnant of us to escape andgiven us a stable home in his holy place, so that our God can raise our spirits and revive us a little in our slavery. |
| 9 Noi infatti siamo ancora schiavi, ma il nostro Dio non ci ha abbandonato nella nostra schiavitù, anzi ha steso la misericordia su di noi al cospetto dei re di Persia, per concederci la vita, per innalzare il tempio del nostro Dio, restaurare le sue rovine e concederci un muro di riparo in Giuda e a Gerusalemme! | 9 For we are slaves; but God has not forgotten us in our slavery; he has extended his faithful love to useven under the kings of Persia and revived us to rebuild the Temple of our God, restore its ruins and provide uswith a refuge in Judah and in Jerusalem. |
| 10 Ora, o nostro Dio, che cosa possiamo dire dopo queste cose? Che abbiamo abbandonato i tuoi comandamenti | 10 But now, our God, what can we say after this? For we have abandoned your commandments, |
| 11 che tu hai imposto per mezzo dei tuoi servitori, i profeti, dicendo: “ La terra che andate a prendere in eredità è un paese immondo a causa della immondezza dei popoli del paese e a causa degli abomini, di cui lo hanno riempito da un capo all’altro con le loro impurità. | 11 which you gave through your servants the prophets in these terms, "The country which you are aboutto possess is a polluted country, pol uted by the people of the country and their disgusting practices, which havefilled it with their filth from end to end. |
| 12 Ebbene, non date più in spose le vostre figlie ai loro figli nè prendete le loro figlie per i vostri figli nè ricercate mai la loro amicizia e il loro benessere. Poichè voi sarete forti, mangerete i beni di questa terra e la lascerete per sempre in eredità ai vostri figli”. | 12 Hence you are not to give your daughters in marriage to their sons, or let their daughters marry yoursons, or ever concern yourselves about peace or good relations with them, if you want to grow stronger, to liveoff the fat of the land and bequeath it to your sons for ever." |
| 13 Dunque, dopo quanto ci è capitato a causa delle nostre azioni malvagie e delle nostre gravi colpe — sebbene tu, nostro Dio, abbia punito le nostre iniquità ancora meno di quanto ci meritavamo e ci abbia conservato un resto superstite come questo | 13 'After al that has befal en us because of our evil deeds and our deep guilt -- though you, our God, havepunished us less than our iniquities deserved and have al owed us to escape like this- |
| 14 — potremmo noi infrangere di nuovo i tuoi comandamenti e imparentarci con questi popoli abominevoli? Non ti irriteresti forse contro di noi fino a sterminarci così che non ci sia nè resto nè superstite? | 14 are we to break your commandments again and intermarry with people with these disgustingpractices? Would you not be enraged with us to the point of destroying us, leaving neither remnant nor survivor? |
| 15 Jahve, Dio di Israele, tu sei giusto, poichè ci sono rimasti superstiti come oggi. Eccoci innanzi a te con la nostra colpa, anche se non potremmo sussistere alla tua presenza a causa di essa! ». | 15 Yahweh, God of Israel, you are upright. We survive only as the remnant we are today. We come beforeyou in our guilt; because of it we cannot stand in your presence.' |
