Livre des Proverbes 23

1 Si tu t'assieds à la table d'un grand, prends bien garde à ce qui est devant toi;	1 When you sit down to eat with a leader, pay close attention to what has been set before your face,
2 mets un couteau sur ta gorge si tu es gourmand.	2 and put a knife to your throat, if, in such a way, you could hold your soul in your own power.
3 Ne convoite pas ses mets, car c'est une nourriture décevante.	3 Do not desire his foods, in which is the bread of deceit.
4 Ne te fatigue pas à acquérir la richesse, cesse d'y appliquer ton intelligence.	4 Do not be willing to labor so that you may be enriched. But set limits by your prudence.
5 Lèves-tu les yeux vers elle, elle n'est plus là, car elle sait se faire des ailes comme l'aigle qui volevers le ciel.	5 Do not raise your eyes toward wealth that you are not able to have. For they will make themselves wings, like those of an eagle, and they will fly in the sky.
6 Ne mange pas le pain de l'homme aux regards envieux, ne convoite pas ses mets.	6 Do not eat with an envious man, and do not desire his foods.
7 Car le calcul qu'il fait en lui-même, c'est lui: "Mange et bois!" te dit-il, mais son coeur n'est pasavec toi.	7 For, like a seer and an interpreter of dreams, he presumes what he does not know. “Eat and drink,” he will say to you; and his mind is not with you.
8 La bouchée à peine avalée, tu la vomiras et tu en seras pour tes paroles flatteuses.	8 The foods that you had eaten, you will vomit up. And you will lose the beauty in your words.
9 Aux oreilles du sot ne parle pas, il mépriserait la finesse de tes propos.	9 Do not speak into the ears of the unwise. They will despise the doctrine of your eloquence.
10 Ne déplace pas la borne antique, dans le champ des orphelins n'entre pas,	10 Do not touch the boundaries of little ones, and do not enter into the field of the fatherless.
11 car leur vengeur est puissant, c'est lui qui épousera, contre toi, leur querelle.	11 For their close relative is strong, and he will judge their case against you.
12 Applique ton coeur à la discipline, tes oreilles aux paroles de science.	12 Let your heart enter into doctrine, and let your ears enter into words of knowledge.
13 Ne ménage pas à l'enfant la correction, si tu le frappes de la baguette, il n'en mourra pas!	13 Do not be willing to take away discipline from a child. For if you strike him with the rod, he will not die.
14 Si tu le frappes de la baguette, c'est son âme que tu délivreras du shéol.	14 You will strike him with the rod, and so shall you deliver his soul from Hell.
15 Mon fils, si ton coeur est sage, mon coeur, à moi, se réjouira,	15 My son, if your soul will become wise, my heart will be glad with you.
16 et mes reins exulteront quand tes lèvres exprimeront des choses justes.	16 And my temperament will exult, when your lips will have spoken what is upright.
17 Que ton coeur n'envie pas les pécheurs, mais dans la crainte de Yahvé qu'il reste tout le jour,	17 Let not your heart compete with sinners. But be in the fear of the Lord all day long.
18 car il existe un avenir et ton espérance ne sera pas anéantie.	18 For you will have hope in the end, and your expectation will not be taken away.
19 Ecoute, mon fils, deviens sage, et dirige ton coeur dans le chemin.	19 Listen, my son, and be wise, and direct your soul along the way.
20 Ne sois pas de ceux qui s'enivrent de vin, ni de ceux qui se gavent de viande,	20 Do not be willing to be in the feasts of great drinkers, nor in the carousings of those who gather to feed on flesh.
21 car buveur et glouton s'appauvrissent, et la torpeur fait porter des haillons.	21 For those who waste time drinking, and who surrender themselves to symbols, will be consumed. And those who sleep will be clothed in rags.
22 Ecoute ton père qui t'a engendré, ne méprise pas ta mère devenue vieille.	22 Listen to your father, who conceived you. And do not despise your mother, when she is old.
23 Acquiers la vérité, ne la vends pas: sagesse, discipline et intelligence.	23 Purchase truth, and do not sell wisdom, or doctrine, or understanding.
24 Il est au comble de l'allégresse, le père du juste; celui qui a donné le jour au sage s'en réjouit.	24 The father of the just exults in gladness; he who has conceived the wise will rejoice in him.
25 Ton père et ta mère seront dans la joie, et dans l'allégresse, celle qui t'a enfanté.	25 Let your father and your mother be joyful, and may she who conceived you exult.
26 Mon fils, prête-moi attention, que tes yeux se complaisent dans ma voie:	26 My son, offer me your heart, and let your eyes keep to my ways.
27 c'est une fosse profonde que la prostituée, un puits étroit que l'étrangère.	27 For a loose woman is a deep pit, and a foreign woman is a constricted well.
28 Elle aussi, comme un brigand, est en embuscade, parmi les hommes elle multiplie les traîtres.	28 She lies in wait along the way like a robber. And the incautious one whom she sees, she will put to death.
29 Pour qui les "Malheur?" Pour qui les "Hélas?" Pour qui les querelles? Pour qui les plaintes?Pour qui les coups à tort et à travers? Pour qui les yeux troubles?	29 Who has woe? Whose father has woe? Who has quarrels? Who falls into pits? Who has wounds without cause? Who has watery eyes?
30 Pour ceux qui s'attardent au vin, qui vont en quête de boissons mêlées.	30 Is it not those who linger over wine, and who strive to be drinking from their cups?
31 Ne regarde pas le vin, comme il est vermeil! comme il brille dans la coupe! comme il couletout droit!	31 Do not gaze into the wine when it turns gold, when its color shines in the glass. It enters pleasantly,
32 Il finit par mordre comme un serpent, par piquer comme une vipère.	32 but in the end, it will bite like a snake, and it will spread poison like a king of snakes.
33 Tes yeux verront d'étranges choses, ton coeur s'exprimera de travers.	33 Your eyes will see women who are outsiders, and your heart will utter perversities.
34 Tu seras comme un homme couché en haute mer, ou couché à la pointe d'un mât.	34 And you will be like someone sleeping in the middle of the sea, and like a pilot, fast asleep, who has lost his hold on the helm.
35 "On m'a battu, je n'ai point de mal! On m'a rossé, je n'ai rien senti! Quand m'éveillerai-je? J'endemanderai encore!"	35 And you will say: “They have beaten me, but I did not feel pain. They have dragged me, and I did not realize it. When will I awaken and find more wine?”
