Livre des Proverbes 23

JERUSALEM	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Si tu t'assieds à la table d'un grand, prends bien garde à ce qui est devant toi;	1 If you take your seat at a great man's table, take careful note of what you have before you;
2 mets un couteau sur ta gorge si tu es gourmand.	2 if you have a big appetite put a knife to your throat.
3 Ne convoite pas ses mets, car c'est une nourriture décevante.	3 Do not hanker for his delicacies, for they are deceptive food.
4 Ne te fatigue pas à acquérir la richesse, cesse d'y appliquer ton intelligence.	4 Do not wear yourself out in quest of wealth, stop applying your mind to this.
5 Lèves-tu les yeux vers elle, elle n'est plus là, car elle sait se faire des ailes comme l'aigle qui volevers le ciel.	5 Fix your gaze on it, and it is there no longer, for it is able to sprout wings like an eagle that flies off tothe sky.
6 Ne mange pas le pain de l'homme aux regards envieux, ne convoite pas ses mets.	6 Do not eat the food of anyone whose eye is jealous, do not hanker for his delicacies.
7 Car le calcul qu'il fait en lui-même, c'est lui: "Mange et bois!" te dit-il, mais son coeur n'est pasavec toi.	7 For what he is real y thinking about is himself: 'Eat and drink,' he tells you, but his heart is not with you.
8 La bouchée à peine avalée, tu la vomiras et tu en seras pour tes paroles flatteuses.	8 You wil spit out whatever you have eaten and find your compliments wasted.
9 Aux oreilles du sot ne parle pas, il mépriserait la finesse de tes propos.	9 Do not waste words on a fool, who wil not appreciate the shrewdness of your remarks.
10 Ne déplace pas la borne antique, dans le champ des orphelins n'entre pas,	10 Do not displace the ancient boundary-stone, or encroach on orphans' lands,
11 car leur vengeur est puissant, c'est lui qui épousera, contre toi, leur querelle.	11 for they have a powerful avenger, and he will take up their cause against you.
12 Applique ton coeur à la discipline, tes oreilles aux paroles de science.	12 Apply your heart to discipline, and your ears to instructive sayings.
13 Ne ménage pas à l'enfant la correction, si tu le frappes de la baguette, il n'en mourra pas!	13 Do not be chary of correcting a child, a stroke of the cane is not likely to be fatal.
14 Si tu le frappes de la baguette, c'est son âme que tu délivreras du shéol.	14 Give him a stroke of the cane, you wil save his soul from Sheol.
15 Mon fils, si ton coeur est sage, mon coeur, à moi, se réjouira,	15 My child, if your heart is wise, then my own heart is glad,
16 et mes reins exulteront quand tes lèvres exprimeront des choses justes.	16 and my inmost self rejoices when from your lips come honest words.
17 Que ton coeur n'envie pas les pécheurs, mais dans la crainte de Yahvé qu'il reste tout le jour,	17 Do not let your heart be envious of sinners but remain steady every day in the fear of Yahweh;
18 car il existe un avenir et ton espérance ne sera pas anéantie.	18 for there is a future, and your hope wil not come to nothing.
19 Ecoute, mon fils, deviens sage, et dirige ton coeur dans le chemin.	19 Listen, my child, and be wise, and guide your heart in the way.
20 Ne sois pas de ceux qui s'enivrent de vin, ni de ceux qui se gavent de viande,	20 Do not be one of those forever tippling wine nor one of those who gorge themselves with meat;
21 car buveur et glouton s'appauvrissent, et la torpeur fait porter des haillons.	21 for the drunkard and glutton impoverish themselves, and sleepiness is clothed in rags.
22 Ecoute ton père qui t'a engendré, ne méprise pas ta mère devenue vieille.	22 Listen to your father from whom you are sprung, do not despise your mother in her old age.
23 Acquiers la vérité, ne la vends pas: sagesse, discipline et intelligence.	23 Purchase truth -- never sel it-wisdom, discipline, and discernment.
24 Il est au comble de l'allégresse, le père du juste; celui qui a donné le jour au sage s'en réjouit.	24 The father of the upright wil rejoice indeed, he who fathers a wise child wil have joy of it.
25 Ton père et ta mère seront dans la joie, et dans l'allégresse, celle qui t'a enfanté.	25 Your father and mother will be happy, and she who bore you joyful.
26 Mon fils, prête-moi attention, que tes yeux se complaisent dans ma voie:	26 My child, pay attention to me, let your eyes take pleasure in my way:
27 c'est une fosse profonde que la prostituée, un puits étroit que l'étrangère.	27 a prostitute is a deep pit, a narrow wel , the woman who belongs to another.
28 Elle aussi, comme un brigand, est en embuscade, parmi les hommes elle multiplie les traîtres.	28 Yes, like a brigand, she lies in wait, increasing the number of law-breakers.
29 Pour qui les "Malheur?" Pour qui les "Hélas?" Pour qui les querelles? Pour qui les plaintes?Pour qui les coups à tort et à travers? Pour qui les yeux troubles?	29 For whom is pity, for whom contempt, for whom is strife, for whom complaint, for whom blows struckat random, for whom the clouded eye?
30 Pour ceux qui s'attardent au vin, qui vont en quête de boissons mêlées.	30 For those who linger over wine too long, ever on the look-out for the blended liquors.
31 Ne regarde pas le vin, comme il est vermeil! comme il brille dans la coupe! comme il couletout droit!	31 Do not gaze at wine, how red it is, how it sparkles in the cup! How smoothly it slips down the throat!
32 Il finit par mordre comme un serpent, par piquer comme une vipère.	32 In the end its bite is like a serpent's, its sting as sharp as an adder's.
33 Tes yeux verront d'étranges choses, ton coeur s'exprimera de travers.	33 Your eyes wil see peculiar things, you will talk nonsense from your heart.
34 Tu seras comme un homme couché en haute mer, ou couché à la pointe d'un mât.	34 You will be like someone sleeping in mid-ocean, like one asleep at the mast-head.
35 "On m'a battu, je n'ai point de mal! On m'a rossé, je n'ai rien senti! Quand m'éveillerai-je? J'endemanderai encore!"	35 'Struck me, have they? But I'm not hurt. Beaten me? I don't feel anything. When shal I wake up? . . I'lask for more of it!'
