Livre des Proverbes 23

JERUSALEM	DOUAI-RHEIMS
1 Si tu t'assieds à la table d'un grand, prends bien garde à ce qui est devant toi;	1 When thou shalt sit to eat with a prince, consider diligently what is set before thy face.
2 mets un couteau sur ta gorge si tu es gourmand.	2 And put a knife to thy throat, if it be so that thou have thy soul in thy own power.
3 Ne convoite pas ses mets, car c'est une nourriture décevante.	3 Be not desirous of his meats, in which is the bread of deceit.
4 Ne te fatigue pas à acquérir la richesse, cesse d'y appliquer ton intelligence.	4 Labour not to be rich: but set bounds to thy prudence.
5 Lèves-tu les yeux vers elle, elle n'est plus là, car elle sait se faire des ailes comme l'aigle qui volevers le ciel.	5 Lift not up thy eyes to riches which thou canst not have: because they shall make themselves wings like those of an eagle, and shall fly towards heaven.
6 Ne mange pas le pain de l'homme aux regards envieux, ne convoite pas ses mets.	6 Eat not with an envious man, and desire not his meats:
7 Car le calcul qu'il fait en lui-même, c'est lui: "Mange et bois!" te dit-il, mais son coeur n'est pasavec toi.	7 Because like a soothsayer, and diviner, he thinketh that which he knoweth not. Eat and drink, will he say to thee: and his mind is not with thee.
8 La bouchée à peine avalée, tu la vomiras et tu en seras pour tes paroles flatteuses.	8 The meats which thou hadst eaten, thou shalt vomit up: and shalt loose thy beautiful words.
9 Aux oreilles du sot ne parle pas, il mépriserait la finesse de tes propos.	9 Speak not in the ears of fools: because they will despise the instruction of thy speech.
10 Ne déplace pas la borne antique, dans le champ des orphelins n'entre pas,	10 Touch not the bounds of little ones: and enter not into the field of the fatherless:
11 car leur vengeur est puissant, c'est lui qui épousera, contre toi, leur querelle.	11 For their near kinsman is strong: and he will judge their cause against thee.
12 Applique ton coeur à la discipline, tes oreilles aux paroles de science.	12 Let thy heart apply itself to instruction: and thy ears to words of knowledge.
13 Ne ménage pas à l'enfant la correction, si tu le frappes de la baguette, il n'en mourra pas!	13 Withhold not correction from a child: for if thou strike him with the rod, he shall not die.
14 Si tu le frappes de la baguette, c'est son âme que tu délivreras du shéol.	14 Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and deliver his soul from hell.
15 Mon fils, si ton coeur est sage, mon coeur, à moi, se réjouira,	15 My son, if thy mind be wise, my heart shall rejoice with thee:
16 et mes reins exulteront quand tes lèvres exprimeront des choses justes.	16 And my reins shall rejoice, when thy lips shall speak what is right.
17 Que ton coeur n'envie pas les pécheurs, mais dans la crainte de Yahvé qu'il reste tout le jour,	17 Let not thy heart envy sinners: but be thou in the fear of the Lord all the day long:
18 car il existe un avenir et ton espérance ne sera pas anéantie.	18 Because thou shalt have hope in the latter end, and thy expectation shall not be taken away.
19 Ecoute, mon fils, deviens sage, et dirige ton coeur dans le chemin.	19 Hear thou, my son, and be wise: and guide thy mind in the way.
20 Ne sois pas de ceux qui s'enivrent de vin, ni de ceux qui se gavent de viande,	20 Be not in the feasts of great drinkers, nor in their revellings, who contribute flesh to eat:
21 car buveur et glouton s'appauvrissent, et la torpeur fait porter des haillons.	21 Because they that give themselves to drinking, and that club together shall be consumed; and drowsiness shall be clothed with rags.
22 Ecoute ton père qui t'a engendré, ne méprise pas ta mère devenue vieille.	22 Hearken to thy father, that beget thee: and despise not thy mother when she is old.
23 Acquiers la vérité, ne la vends pas: sagesse, discipline et intelligence.	23 Buy truth, and do not sell wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.
24 Il est au comble de l'allégresse, le père du juste; celui qui a donné le jour au sage s'en réjouit.	24 The father of the just rejoiceth greatly: he that hath begotten a wise son, shall have joy in him.
25 Ton père et ta mère seront dans la joie, et dans l'allégresse, celle qui t'a enfanté.	25 Let thy father, and thy mother be joyful, and let her rejoice that bore thee.
26 Mon fils, prête-moi attention, que tes yeux se complaisent dans ma voie:	26 My son, give me thy heart: and let thy eyes keep my ways.
27 c'est une fosse profonde que la prostituée, un puits étroit que l'étrangère.	27 For a harlot is a deep ditch: and a strange woman is a narrow pit.
28 Elle aussi, comme un brigand, est en embuscade, parmi les hommes elle multiplie les traîtres.	28 She lieth in wait in the way as a robber, and him whom she shall see unwary, she will kill.
29 Pour qui les "Malheur?" Pour qui les "Hélas?" Pour qui les querelles? Pour qui les plaintes?Pour qui les coups à tort et à travers? Pour qui les yeux troubles?	29 Who hath woe? whose father hath woe? who hath contentions? who falls into pits? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes?
30 Pour ceux qui s'attardent au vin, qui vont en quête de boissons mêlées.	30 Surely they that pass their time in wine, and study to drink of their cups.
31 Ne regarde pas le vin, comme il est vermeil! comme il brille dans la coupe! comme il couletout droit!	31 Look not upon the wine when it is yellow, when the colour thereof shineth in the glass: it goeth in pleasantly,
32 Il finit par mordre comme un serpent, par piquer comme une vipère.	32 But in the end, it will bite like a snake, and will spread abroad poison like a basilisk.
33 Tes yeux verront d'étranges choses, ton coeur s'exprimera de travers.	33 Thy eyes shall behold strange women, and thy heart shall utter perverse things.
34 Tu seras comme un homme couché en haute mer, ou couché à la pointe d'un mât.	34 And thou shalt be as one sleeping in the midst of the sea, and as a pilot fast asleep, when the stern is lost.
35 "On m'a battu, je n'ai point de mal! On m'a rossé, je n'ai rien senti! Quand m'éveillerai-je? J'endemanderai encore!"	35 And thou shalt say: They have beaten me, but I was not sensible of pain: they drew me, and I felt not: when shall I awake, and find wine again?
